Thank you for your wonderful “how-to” videos. I am working on “Emma” at the moment and have enjoyed watching and rewatching your posts. Your boats are lovely “swimmers.”

Always great workmanship that you do. I"m working on a small 2' foot J-boat. Working off of full size plans is a challenge. Love your work and hope to see more soon.

Thank you for magnificent videos Gary. I used to run in the IOM class but that can get tense and while I love the people when its event time things get a little wierd. I love the relaxation and peace of mind I get from sailing so I decided to build a more traditional and scale boat. I am rebuilding my IOM as it got damaged during a transit but while working at it I was watching RU-vid videos on RC sailboats and came across your channel. So much information shared and very enlightening. I had been real scared of sails and rigging and I feel so much more comfortable now that I watched your videos. I will start checking out materials we have here in Turkey. I was going to buy the plans unfortunately our "magnificent " country blocked Paypal (pun intended). I guess I will go the calculate displacement and make it up route :) I always hated planking but your designs gave me the insight to use the singe side pieces which makes things so much easier. I also want to make it a full heel as we get a lot of debris and the boat gets stuck. In IOM we have a rescue boat that helps when you are completely stuck but when sailing for fun you are alone mostly and the bulbs always gets stuck. Murphy's laws I guess works here as well. One thing I have not figured out is how do you decide on mast length and sail size compared to your displacement. Appreciate your videos and stay safe.

Thanks Serdar for your story and your can do attitude. As far as sail area to displacement - Calculations on the drawing board provide an approximation of stability. Building and sailing a prototype boat allows more accurate measurements and observation of the performance. Hull size and shape of course have a great influence on the amount of stability available. All the Bearospace boats share a similar V-bottom hull form, and their sail area/displacement ranges from about: 35sq.in./pound - (496sq.cm./kg) - Mild mannered schooner 55sq.in./pound - (780sq.cm./kg) - Rather lively cutter

@@sailtails2775 so I guess the IOM boats fall into madbull category. Only the mainsail area is roughly 5832cm2 which puts it to 1.458 sq.cm/kg (4000 minimum weight which we all try to get to) so basically as long as I make sure the the bouyancy and center of gravity are in good positions, I keep the displacement safe and keep an eye on the sq.cm/kg sail are I should be safe. I was thinking about making the keel ballast layered so I can change the weight to see how it behaves. It would be easier to do than making a new one each time I want to test. The con would be that the center of gravity will be a little higher but I think I will add that to safety margin and since this boat is to enjoy sailing I am not going to concern myself too much with that. I will start drawing and calculating while collecting materials. Again thank you for the reply. It has shed a lot of light to my shadow of doubts :)

Thanks for the help Gary! I have just started assembling the hull on my gaff-rigged ‘Irene’. The rudder is still to come and should be a nice finishing touch

What would happen if you added some led shot at the bottom of the rudder? Will it damage the rudder in any way?

Isnt bending the rod a much simpler method than putting in extra rods?

I do like the pull/pull system
@sailtails2775
@sailtails2775 3 года назад
Thanks for asking about this. The rudder is fairly large, the stock is 1/4" diameter. Bending might be possible, but the extra rods (1/8") are easy to do. They provide support over the entire surface and allow the rudder to have a thinner trailing edge.

@@sailtails2775 What size tubing for the rod to go in please
@sailtails2775
@sailtails2775 3 года назад
@@petronopulas I simply let the 1/4" rudder stock ride in a drilled 17/64" hole in a wooden support block glued into the hull. I saturate the drilled hole with penetrating epoxy, and I grease the rudder stock occasionally.

@@sailtails2775 thank you for your reply. Sir. I thought you would have put an aluminium tube in the wood block and the rod inside that but if it works ok without then I’ll try that.
