This is my review of the following antenna - RCA Attic/Outdoor Compact HD Antenna model# ANT705E. It runs about $35 at Walmart, comes with a mounting pole, and claims a 70 mile range. How well does it work? Can you use other antennas in the attic?

Hey Tyler. Quick question for you. I used to be able to get some allentown pa stations. They were me tv, weather, and news. I just tried to pull up one of the channels and it was black. I did a rescan and now the antenna doesn't see these channels at all. What the heck is going on. Also, i am now getting interference on a bunch of channels that never had a problem before. Is it possible that some sort of object, a tower, might have been switched on that is directly in the direction my antenna points?

I had bought that antenna about 3 months ago and the range said 70 miles. Well I live about 10 miles farther than 70 miles from our local TV stations. Around 3 days ago we had 50 to 60 mph winds dirt blowing like crazy and my TV still picked it up all 57 channels. Heck my cell phone wasn't even working in the dust storm. So I'm so happy with this antenna. It would be nice if it was Wi-Fi compatible. Take care for the video and letting us know about things.

Our antenna and amp have finally died. Over the past 2 days we went from 28 channels to 5 channels to none. We are currently looking at this same antenna online and are about to go check it out in store at Home Depot. Thank you for the video, it has helped our choice a lot, as we are very poor and this $44 antenna will be replacing the $65 one I bought 8 years ago that was one of those plastic 150 mile ones you said DO NOT BUY lol. Appreciate all your efforts.

I think the Attic keyword, is that a lot of people do not realize you can put an antenna in the attic. Too many people think you can only use a small antenna indoors (same room as TV) or outdoors on the roof. Having an antenna in attic is a good sneaker way to hide outdoor antenna indoors. An antenna in attic will get better signal, than a smaller antenna in room with TV (larger antenna and higher up than floor(s) below it. 👍

Better signal strength quality if it's put on the outside of the house than in a attic, number one, however if your a prisoner of these HOME OWNERS ASSOCIATION gig, then your attic installation is your only viable option

I paired my huge outdoor antenna in the attic with a modest looking Antennas Direct MaxV, using the Televes 560483, which I put at the peak vent to look like an ornament. I was probably halved my signal that the attic antenna pulled by putting a metal roof on the house. This brought everything back up without compromise on the aesthetic of the architecture.
@dennisgarber
@dennisgarber 7 месяцев назад
@@danbasta3677 I read you loose 30 percent of the signal of the antenna. I put my antenna on a mast on the chimney. The picture was perfect until the wife got home, then suddenly, ll I got was extremely loud static that would not stop by simply turning off the TV. So, I took it down and tried the attic. To be honest, the antenna looked bad on my small house, especially where out chimney is. Also, by putting the antenna in the attic, you avoid the corrosion which eventually degrades the signal. I believe this is true, because on the house before this one, I had to replace all kinds of corroded connectors etc, to get that antenna to get good reception. Very similar antenna but corroded and old, and the new antenna definitely got more stations despite being inside with tight rows of tall trees in the line of sight.

I live about 20 miles from the Albany,NY antenna farm and this antenna has served me well. Installed it in my attic with an amplified splitter and I get all of the Albany stations, including the rather weak WYBN 14. Have also seen ch 28 Vermont PBS come in on a clear night, but antenna is aimed in the opposite direction.

I don't know if you're going to get this message, But I had been looking for a decent indoor antenna for my mom who had a stroke recently and needed to move to a different room in the house which didn't have access to the home's attic aerial antenna. She loves over the air TV, especially all the extra sub channels that you get with it. I tried everything that I could find. One day, I saw this very antenna at a discount store. I thought it was intriguing, but did not buy it. Ironically, as soon as I got home I got a notification of this video that you made for the exact same antenna. I took your positive review to heart, went back to the store, bought it and gave it to my mom for mother's Day. I only just had a chance to set it up for her, and it works great! It obviously doesn't get all the fringe channels at the roof aerial does, but it gets all the main channels that she needs now. This is the first indoor antenna that has worked for her for both VHF and UHF channels. It's much smaller than it appears on the video, and tucks away nicely in a corner of the room on a shelf. I'd say it's about 2 ft x 2 ft or so, so it's not so bad. Obviously it's not beautiful, but it is functional and convenient. Thank you for your review. I would never have gotten it without your advice, And it has worked perfectly for us. She thanks you, too. Now she can watch all the channels that she needs. I would like to add that I did buy an amplifier as well for the antenna. That did help stabilize the signals, But it wasn't entirely necessary. The antenna did quite well just on its own. Thank you again, and keep up the good work!

Folks he is right!!! An antenna picks up RF and thats it. "HD" stations basically convert their signal to RF and transmit it. Your setup recieves it and converts it back to HD. The main thing that dictates what an antenna can receive or transmit is its resonant frequency.

I replaced what I think was a GE, smallish with only a horizontal series of bars in an arrow shape, with this RCA. I ordered it from Walmart which has a slightly different model number, and in the Walmart photo had bright green plastic.. but the actual antenna has the light grey plastic like the one in this video (which is good, I didn't want bright green plastic on my roof). The channel I had previously seen reception scores of around 28-30 went right to 36 and the max reception bars on a Samsung TV. Same mounting location, and the previous antenna I specifically aimed to increase reception on that one channel. I just eyeballed the direction when I installed this one, and even with that, the score is way higher than I ever got with my old antenna. The build quality feels a little light, I just hope this thing lasts. I'm in Sacramento so there's no crazy weather. This antenna is quite a deal at $40.

This review helped me decide to get this antenna particularly how it gets better reception. Your extensive knowledge about frequency and range was very informative especially about making sure the antenna is pointed in the right direction where majority of the towers are. So I installed it in the attic, and used an app making sure it was pointed in the direction where majority of the towers are. Wife says the reception is better than the “leaf” one we had. “Thank You” for the help.

I truly thought you were going to bash the antenna that I chose, but to my delight you gave it a pretty decent rating it is definitely from Walmart I'm in an area where I have lots of interference as far as structures and Hills yet I seem to do quite well the thing that Drew me for this type of antenna that was the surprisingly good reception I got from one similar from Home Depot I think your assessments are spot-on.

Bought and installed this very model a few years ago. Single story home and mounted in the attic. Live in south Louisiana so high winds from hurricanes was a factor. One local station has trouble with signal depending on weather. Broadcast tower is far outside the parish/county. The local PBS stations also have some signal issues and I believe they too may be VHF. All other UHF stations have a more reliable signal. We do have trees behind our home to the south, no trees to the north. Few trees to the east and west. Even with the largest outdoor antenna and tallest pole available I remember having issues with signals from some stations in the 70s and 80s. Based on those experiences I feel this model antenna is doing fine for our needs. A larger antenna mounted in the attic may get slightly better signal but we don’t solely rely on antenna. We use it as an emergency backup. We tried the window cling antenna and they didn’t hardly work at all for us.

Try it, I've had this antenna in my attic for 3 yrs now, for me it works great. I live in a suburban area about 40 miles from most of the transmitters. I put this in my attic not because the package marketed it that way but, 1) I didn't want to go up on my roof, 2) I didn't want to drill holes in my roof, 3) I wanted the antenna to be protected from the elements as it can get pretty windy here in western NY state. I got mine at the local Home Depot.

To get technical, what matters with the antenna is only the carrier frequency (e.g. the RF channel), not the type of modulation. HD and 4K are modulation schemes, which don't matter at all as long as the antenna can receive at the respective carrier frequency. Modulation uses a certain bandwith, but not nearly as much as what the antenna covers.

I have this antenna, and I would highly recommend it. I'm actually shocked to see it performed almost on par with the DB8e. I removed the VHF elements (making the antenna smaller) because there are no VHF broadcasts in my area. It did not affect UHF performance and may have even slightly improved it. I mounted this antenna indoors in a 2nd-floor vaulted ceiling space. Even with the attenuation, my receivers show 70-80% signal quality 12-18miles from the TV towers. My Samsung TV gives the quality in SNR, and major channels come in at 31-35dB.

I have the very large RCA Antenna and Rotater . About 8 ft long. Worked great in AZ. Pointed toward Oatman booster stations about 15 miles away. Picks up Vegas and Phoenix stations. Nasty winds here have busted up the poor plastic on antenna and broke the crappy gears in rotater which I don’t need anyway. Have vise grips on pole now to keep wind from turning it. Still works with several rods hanging down. Hope to put it in high attic after trying to fix antenna. No parts available from RCA. NOT made for strong winds. Any advice from antenna man would be appreciated.

I bought this antenna from Menards a few years ago. I tried it in my study (not in the attic) so that I can change the direction to attempt to get channels from different areas. I live 10 miles east of Rockford Illinois. This antenna would only pick up the CBS and ABC from Rockford. But, I picked up NBC, FOX, ABC, WTTW, and a few other stations from Chicago (which is about 50-60 miles away. Weird thing was that I picked up some Madison WI and Milwaukee WI stations. However, it did not work as well when I put it in the attic.

Mount it on a mast on your roof. You'll see excellent results. Just be sure to weather seal all your RG 6 connections to keep moisture from coming into the center conductor of your cable. By sealing out and drip looping your cable, your pictures on the tv set will last for a life time.

Used 1 of these for 2 years. Picked up UHF and VHF hi channels on a 2 edge path 40 miles away. Got an average signal strength of around 60%. Swapped it out for a larger antenna in order to pickup a low power station on the same 2 edge path and 40 miles away. I had it outside in full sun and noticed some degradation on the plastic parts. This antenna might be better suited for an attic installation.

well... not necessarily. since attic antennas aren't exposed to the elements, they can be made of different material than outdoor and indoor antennas. Just need to stand up to the heat. I agree with you 100% that any good outdoor antenna should be fine in the attic. I like my GE attic antenna, although as you said, it isn't strong enough in my situation to be reliable. I've been curious as to the difference between the GE attic antenna and the GE attic/outdoor pro antenna. I like this one too. I'm on a moratorium from buying new antennas. don't wanna be divorced :-) Even though I'm only 28 miles from the towers, my house is over the hill and through the trees. To be fair, a smaller antenna is easier to mount, so there is that. Also a very large Yagi might need to be assembled IN the attic, as it might not fit up the door once assembled.

I thought the review was well done and based on the review I bought the antenna. You should shop around though. Home Depot wanted $49.98 and Walmart $39.58. It took longer than I expected to assemble the antenna. The instructions were ok but could have been better; more on that later. Assembling the reflectors to the antenna boom was tricky. You had to hold on to the boom while installing the clamps and then insert the reflectors into the clamps. When I went to install the balm housing I was concerned that pressing it down over the boom might break it. And then to press down hard enough to seat it I removed the reflectors; so I would suggest you install the balm housing first. Attaching the UHF dipoles left me concerned about what side faced the reflectors since it seems that this would be critical to how well in function. As I assembled it I noticed that there was some error proofing; although it was not mentioned in the instructions and was not easy to see it. On one side of the flat surface that mounts to the housing there is a square corner and the other side a small chamfer, very small. My cable provider, WOW, is getting out of the cable business and encouraging customers to order RU-vidTV and use WOW for internet and phone only. I intend to use their coax to provide the signal to my TVs and still get RU-vidTV.

@danbasta3677 7 месяцев назад
If your talking about tv towers, yes, they are an advantage especally when you put your tv antennas on them/mounted on them. If your thinking of tri pods that are mounted on the roof of a house, as you are using it to mount the lag bolts into the rafters for sturdy along with a strong mounted yet reliable feature to support your system head end stationary tv antenna, they should be available yet in a hardware store if requested to purchase, or they can give you information as to whare to purchase a trip pod antenna support fixture.

I wonder how good this antenna receives of its back end? I bought the small RCA Yagi antenna and pointed it NW, it works great but it also receives all the channels from 40 miles to the south. I would sacrifice a percentage of the receive if it meant getting 2x the channels.

Tyler, I’m puzzled by one thing. If UHF signals are picked up better by smaller antenna elements, then which feature(s) of an antenna should be larger to increase its ability to receive signals from further distances?

More elements of the smaller size

@@AntennaMan I understand the principle. I don't understand why loops aren't combined with the vhf elements, or why both vertical and horizontal element arrays, =, O, plus ==. By ulitizing forward and vertical arrays and a loop, a more compact antenna should be possible without a directionally sprawling antenna. I also don't understand the characteristic of this loop vhf in how it performs v. Several or one element. Also shouldn't the vhf have a optional removable reflector? Could not at least one uhf loop be omnidirectional plus the directional uhf area? Someone should do a video on this stuff! I am going to suggest this to DanTDM or the action lab. Maybe mint mobile will do a video on this. I hear Ryan Reynolds is still using rabbit ears to avoid a cable bill.

I've been watching these videos for some time. I live in suburb of Austin and the broadcast towers are less than 20 miles away. Since we are renting the home I have not been able to put a roof antenna on the house, but I have rigged up an attic antenna. I seem to have a problem where the VHF channel is not clear. The underside of the roof is faced with a reflective material that I think is causing this. Is that likely the case? Even so close to the transmission source (about 17 miles)? If I tilt the antenna ever so slightly I can gain back the VHF channel but then one of the other channels fritzes out instead. The towers are literally right together - so strange that I can't get them all.

I bought several indoor antennas and decided this model because of reviews and, RCA is reputable. The only station I wanted was Fox for football and no matter what I did I couldn't get it. I'm located in a valley and the Fox tower is about 30 miles away behind two 600 foot ranges. I originally mounted it to where my ex-dish was mounted on my roof and, although I gained some stations, I didn't get Fox. It wasn't as high as the peak of my roof so, I gorilla stomped the dish to make a base, drilled the mounting bracket into the dish, used some old garage door opener tubing to get as much height as I possibly could, and installed it in my attic. I wanted to be able to adjust it in case I needed to fine tune it. I went from 12 channels to picking up 63... I'm picking up everything in my area that is broadcasting. I came here to see if there were better models and you answered my questions. Thank you for your videos and all your hard work.

More vhf power would be a dream. My channel 8 (WJW) has the tallest tower and the highest elevation spot, yet the best one that comes in is broadcast on 15. The big network that’s on 10 is the weakest, it’s 1 or 2 kW less than 8 because there is a 10 in Canada they are protecting it from.

The Televes LR MIX won't pick up upper VHF to save it's life where my Channel Master 3020 will. Also weird, I get better signal on the LR MIX from 62 miles away, 1000' above sea level, at 8 feet off the ground. FM buddy! Freaking Magic! lol Sometimes those cheap antennas do good. Those rotating ones are fair for FM, and the panel ones are good for LOS UHF. I'm finding I am getting multipath from WCTE, 42 miles away using either outdoor antenna. I've ordered a 1 by one panel model to stick in the window just for that station.

But,i catch sometimes,two north neighbouring states,they' re 400,miles away,if i turn 200km in miles correctly,but not allways,i' ll ask antenna man from my hometown to help me with directions,to get best reception,maybe even those from 3rd neighbouring state.
