WOW! You take care of the cataracts and do a standard recap on these and you are going to have two great color sets!

Great result. Reform caps and up it came (with a bit of knob-twiddling). Amazing how some of these old sets still work. Should be a great restore job.

You can Mount the tuner assy to the chassis for transport. There’s holes specifically for it near the power transformer

Great! Now, you just need a very warm day and a heat gun to remove the cataract. Very cool!!

Warm days are over until next year I'm afraid. I'll give it a try inside with heat gun/lamps. Maybe a hot wire

@@bandersentv Didn't Shango remove one by letting it soak in a tub of water for a couple of months? I know it is not quick, but may be another option, and safer.

Great first power up!
@chetpomeroy1399
@chetpomeroy1399 2 дня назад
Excellent first power-up! Bob might encounter some difficulty adjusting for screen geometry because of that *dreadful* CRT cataract. In one of Retrochad's old videos, he modified a color TV set with a relay for the power supply. The set's original switch was re-wired to control the low-voltage input on a relay, which then turned on the set with direct mains voltage. This was done to lessen the possibility of carbon forming on the original on/off switch and damaging it.

I'll fix the cataract before I adjust the screen geometry

I've been working with CRTs for 40+ years - I'll be fine. The 21FJP22 was not originally sold with bonded safety glass. The earlier sets used a separate piece of glass in front. The CRT is just fine without it. What I mean is it's not like a tensioning band. It doesn't really add to the structural integrity of the CRT. It's more a convenience for manufacturing and of course projecting in case of implosion.

Hehe, I restored to operation a CT-100 back in 1965, repairing a CRT green cathode short, and a lack of color (3pf coupling cap). The set worked for years. Compactrons and 21" CRTs are when I stopped servicing them.

Cut my teeth on the ctc15. Beginning of x-ray scare times. This set his the 6bk4 HV regulator which was "serviceman" adjustable on that row of pots in back. Of course customers would try to get picture brighter by cranking it up. That feature was made fixed soon. replaced fly's, electrolytics in evolving color TV s of the time, fun stuff. If alignment on the bench was a bear, remove 6je6, put like 100 watt load to plate cap, etc. Not long after, built my parents Heatkit GR295 much the same circuitry. The "295" was the square inch viewing area of its 25(bp?)p22 rectangular tube, not the diagonal marketing wank to come soon. For less need of customer adjustment rca had no DC restoring. Added a DC restoring circuit to the heatkit. I think a 12ax7 or the like dangling in the back.

Is there a way to measure the X-Rays? Would a Geiger counter work? I know some used lead covered high voltage rectifiers.

The 6JE6 and the 6DW4 damper are NOT Compactrons. They are "Novar" types which were an RCA invention. Compactrons have 12 pins, Novars have 9.

Then there are Magnovals, same 9 pin dimensions except the pins are larger diameter. Both can sometimes be found in audio amplifiers.

The picture quality is surprisingly good considering everything. Another one you might want to take the safety glass off and clean it up and reglue it. Shango just posted one up recently and it was a RCA tube so a good one he probably put up knowing what you're working on. You could eliminate the safety glass and it would probably be way brighter if you want to chance it. Once you reglue it it's not as tightly bonded anyway so not as designed to work anymore.
@bandersentv
@bandersentv 2 дня назад
I'm definitely removing and gluing the safety glass on both CRTs. They did not originally have bonded safety glass - it was separate. So I'm not so sure about it not being as safe. Really depends on the type of glass used
@69Dartman
@69Dartman 2 дня назад
Watch Shangos video, he covered all that and the warnings too, plus you could probably call him and get his best advice directly. Either way both sets are going to look surprisingly good when they're done. That RCA even looks like the guns are tracking the grey scale really well 👍

When you pull the chassis, the tuner should mount on the two screws below the power transformer. The tube chart would have been on the back of the H.V. cage.
