Was going to make a remark when shango066 said something about 'troubleshooting', that's OK as long as you can get the schematics. Hard to do on anything new today, (no schematics available) and it's hard to find the old things like these neat old TV's that you CAN get schematics on. REALLY hard to diagnose without a schematic.

@@randyr.parker2698 Almost all of these sets were fully documented in their Sam's Photofact folder, most of which you can either find scanned online for free or on their website for a small amount of money. The same goes for almost every radio, they were being documented from the early 1930s up until the mid 1980s. Unlike this old equipment, more modern televisions are not designed to be serviced in any way by anyone except the manufacturer - Who will likely recycle the old component and just replace it outright rather than actually fixing anything.

I just started watching this video this morning and fairly quick into it I"m yelling I know what's wrong. 50 years ago I was working for a TV shop in Longview, TX and had a CTC-15 on the bench displaying the same symptoms. The Boss/Owner of the shop let me get out more and more gear trying to find it until I guess I was just eating up too much time. He came over and shined his little penlight on that wire on top of the board and said change that wire. I did, he was right. When I pulled on it it just fell apart. Bravo for finding it without the Boss showing it too you...

Awesome video I worked in the TV and Video industry and repaired them for years. To make money, I used to go to the refuse tip and get equipment; to renovate and clean and re-sell. I started, just as valves were going out of fashion. I worked on many Manufacturers. Phillips were my favourite, and Grundig my least. Line output transistors and transformers were common. I also had to do tube replacements and total setup from scratch if magnets weren’t attached. Also we had many tubes re-gunned if we couldn’t find a replacement tube. I have a brand new tube tester, I cant seem to sell, because CRT Technology is no more.

The CRT is so old that you have to blow out the signals so much just to get the colors to show. It winds up making the picture blown out and fuzzy. I totally agree that with a proper CRT, that TV would have an excellent picture. Seems the circuitry is in good order. And really, at the end there, that picture is not too bad at all -- totally something you could live with, if that cataract was gone.

Far from it; we've seen you resurrect some pretty challenging sets, you know what you're doing. Far more than a lot of us here. And don't clean the motherboard! Keeping it dirty is worth it if it tweaks someone! ;o) Picture looks good considering the condition of that CRT. Hello Shango, The old timers in the shop I worked at in the late 1970's told me after degaussing, to turn the degauss coil perpendicular (90 degrees), at the center of the screen, then move away slowly. Just a tidbit of how they taught me to do it. Fantastic finding that leaky disc cap. Swear I've seen that issue before, way back, but never solved it.

thanks for one more very good video ! When I remember it right, the purity-alignment has to begin with putting the defl. coil at front as wide as possible, then you get a colour-mixed-picture (only red is on, as you said) with a red spot. This red spot has to be centered in the middle with the purity-magnets and now the defl. coil has to be moved to rear, the red spot in the midle will be bigger until the red-raster is filled out and most pure. You can do it also in your way, I did it, too, but its not the correct way to do it, when I'm right. I would agree with xsc1000, its more usable to measure in the colour demodulation-unit with the 8 colour bar-test-signal. I am more familar with PAL and SECAM, too. You get a feeling for the right look of the h-synchronisized signals, if you compare them with a working unit. Your way with the vectorscope is in my opinion a bit too complicated to do, needs much more experience to interpret faulty signal.

Great video, good that you were able to get that set looking decent. After seeing orange people on these things for many years, it's nice to see skin tones that look like people. Remember that the NTSC color subcarrier is really a suppressed carrier quadrature modulated thing. Looking at your vectorscope, you'll notice that R-Y is at the top of the screen, and B-Y is on the right, 90° in phase from it. It's just that when matrixing these things together it gets confusing. Much of my knowledge of quadrature modulation came from trying to figure out how to directly modulate an Ampliphase transmitter with left and right audio, and have it come out C-QuAM stereo at the other end. Never got that one settled, but I did find another method of gathering the vectors to angle modulate the transmitter with.

Bad 6BK4 by GE replacement in this type of set could produce soft x-rays under the hv area. Started the x-ray scare. You can crank up the hv in this set. Some diyers thiufht it would make it brighter. Just more likely to make it fail. Earth science teacher in high school got me a dosimeter badge to use while working closely with many 6bk4 regulator set. Never showed anything. Later sets had fixed precision resistors in place of pot, and of course later, shutdown circuits.

If you google 'crt phosphor research' there is a pdf listing all the phosphors used and their uses and composition. (Pre 1965 I think). Also for confused new people - To converge a TV set there is a technique that is usually adhered to. There are two steps to adjusting convergence, static and dynamic. The center of the screen should be set first statically with the yoke magnets. Turn off blue gun and align the green and red in center. Turn on blue and align that. Then...i forget if you turn off blue again? but anyway then the dynamic controls (electronic) on the convergence panel can be used to set extremities. Repeat procedure. Purity adjustment ensures the electron guns hit the right phosphors through the shadow mask. Degaussing is also in effect a purity adjustment and this removes any remaining magnetism left in the steel shadow mask which would lead to misregistration of electron beam. (Some early TV didn't have automatic degaussing at switch on - Though even this can not remove highly magnetised shadow mask errors - you would need to do what Shango did.) and as Shango showed this purity adjustment must be done first.

Awesome fix man you are good. I love watching these videos. I bet those people that had no boarder wall are now wishing or changing their minds about now that millions of criminals are crossing their property everyday now. They are getting run over about now. Ha they got what they wanted. Sometimes we get what we want and its not pleasant.

Man I would love a tv set like that. I think it is so cool! It is a shame that I was not subscribed when you uploaded this video. I would of put so much effort into the set to get it back to it's original glory. Well, I hope it found a good home. And keep up the great work! Kind regards Ewan.

Shango, if I recall, the deguassing procedure is done with the set powered down (or in the first several seconds of power-on when the CRT is not in operation). My RCA manuals aren't with me here, but that's what I recall from 55 yrs ago. Then CRT setup: purity, screen, focus, height, width, followed by basic convergence. If you had color signal issues, then you'd do signal tracing starting at the video detector, looking for decent composite signal, then color separator and first chroma amp, then color-burst oscillator, then chroma detectors and then the I/Q matrix just before the CRT. At that point, you've got a color picture on the screen. That's the RCA recommended order of things, but you've gone with a simpler more direct 'existential' approach. ;-)

With the "Green New Deal" coming, will we be able to watch TV when only the wind is blowing? "Darling, is the wind blowing? I'd like to watch TV"

We have like 40% and rising wind energy in Denmark. Works fine. Is a major export industry too now.

Love watching your work. I would really like to see what you are adjusting when you are doing your setup/alignment. Maybe do a split screen when you are tinkering with the yolk and purity magnet and aligning the colors. I would love to see that! Thanks for teaching repair procedures

I recap as more of a safety measure because I don't have a variac to bring the old caps up safely. I don't ever expect it to magically cure all of a set's problems, but it often does help quite a bit. I just troubleshoot any additional problems after the recap.

The game show you commented as old is Sale Of The Century. You likely had the channel on Buzzr. Buzzr is owned by Fremantle Media which is gradually changing to just Fremantle. Fremantle International nailed a video where I played some Steve Harvey era Family Feud. Each game show has the Fremantle logo at the end on Buzzr.

I was 5 years old at the time that was made. We didnt get a color tv until I was about 5 because my dad said they were too costly. He never bought a new tv so he was always replacing tubes in our tv. I didnt find out till later he was color blind, which explained why the color never looked good in any of our TV's.

I'd recommend to run the degaussing coil 30 seconds each run. They can overheat and break easily if overused per run. I'd do that just so I don't have to buy a new one then.😁 Very good job getting it aligned, my big tv just needs a brightener on it and it will be back to good.
