My family was looking at one of these players, in 1984. There were skipping issues at the Sears store. Eventually we got our first VHS machine. That was a smart decision, at the time.

It is very sad to watch videos about RCA´s CED system, it has the taste of a “swan song”. In this video one can see all the efforts RCA has made to assure quality to its product. No shoddy components , no cutting corners, all is made with the highest professionalism. Unfortunately RCA insisted too much on this system and the result was a 600 millions loss ! I agree with OlegKostoglatov´s comment bellow , the company really missed David Sarnoff in command. It is sad as well to read scorning comments (not exactly on this video comments but on many others videos about CED) ridiculing RCA by this fail. RCA was a very serious company , if you have any doubt watch this video from the late 1950s : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5TF2DZ0E0Q4.html. On my kid time we had at home a B&W RCA tv set purchased brand new on 1962 that was with us until 1984 when it was donated to someone who had not any tv at home. By that time we had 3 colour TV sets and guess which of our TVs never had any fault ? The 22 years RCA TV set never developed any fault , working all day long , sometimes forgotten on all the night long ! RCA may be considered the American industry at its best.

We had a colortrak back in the day made after possibly the company was starting to go we later gave it to my aunt and uncle for their cottage no problem. Next rca we bought was part of a home theatre system(not their dimensia line this was the 90s) every time there was an outage we had to reset the system

It's too bad they don't do these type of quality tests anymore..

@vdochev Some of the earlier CD-ROM drives used caddies, which housed the discs but you could open them if you had to. When DVD was being developed Blockbuster asked that they use a caddy, but the developers said no.

ELP were never signed under an RCA-owned label. The rendition in question was done by synthesizer pioneer Isao Tomita on his 1975 album which was indeed released by RCA (Victor).

It was conceived in 1964 but they did not have a working prototype disk until 1972, and were intended for release by 1977 if Wikipedia is to be believed, but the disks had delamination problems so release as put back further. Even so it seems almost an archaic concept to use a mechanical stylus, even though the recording medium is capacitive. I believe that the retirement and passing of David Sarnoff had much to do with the decline and fall of RCA, they quickly lost direction after that.

Don't worry, they probably found work making LaserDiscs, CDs and DVDs afterwards.

@BrentAudi Poor timing as far as release to the market though. This technology was actually developed in 1964.

It’s weird to think about it, but if you had one of those players, it may have showed up in this video

there's also Darrell the CED pro. He rebuilds machines and sells them with a full parts and labor warranty. I bought a machine from him back in 2007 and I'm still very happy w/ my purchase. Then there's Johns Stevens at cedatum.com....He can rebuild your stylus if it ever wears out. John knows everything about ced's. You should contact him if you're interested in buying a Selectavision Videodisc player. Hope this helps....

@joselino71 How will you know if the disc is messed up? You never see the disc. If you try to remove it from the protective package (or whatever that is called) you will damage it. Man, they have to make DVD and Blu-Ray discs like that nowadays. It looks cooler and it's scratch protected ;)

I had one in the early 80's...noisy picture and lots of skips...poor quality, no wonder they only made them for 3 years.

Although they are pretty pricy. Some go as high as $600!

I think you meant LaserDisc. The Compact Disc was audio. This is video.

@kirbyyasha While it APPEARS here that these were a 'quality' product, this format ultimately deserved to fail because EVERY disc would skip at least one time during playback- when you watch one of these it's just a given that you're going to see it skip. That problem should have been eliminated before these were even put on the market. CED's failure is a big reason why RCA isn't what it used to be.

Ah, the days when stuff was actually made in the US. What happened? Look on the back of any electronic device, any toy, anything at all from the past 5 to 10 years, and what does it say? Made in China. I don't want this cheap junk, just give me something good!
