While lead doesn't rust as such, it *does* oxidize over time, getting a gray fuzzy appearance. That shot that you used to replace the old will also oxidize, and it seems to me that the best solution would be to use either copper-plated (good) or nickel-plated (better) shot to totally sidestep the oxidization issue.
