Can someone please explain to me how Broken City 2018 scored higher than this? Was it the notes? There's too many notes in this show and not enough singing right? That's what it is?
Judges adjudicate differently as the activity changes, plus broken city was really good this year even though their show was a little slower, it was still a unique way to tell a story. Not to say RCC 15 wasn’t fantastic too, because that line was absolutely amazing. Adjudicators are giving scores based off of their first impression of a show and they, individually, probably don’t know what the full score will be while they are judging a group.
From a General Effect perspective, Broken Citiy's show was INCREDIBLE. Movements happened because the music asked for it, and the music was pulled along by the movement. While Broken City's program was slower and subdued, the artistry and musicality of the performers was, in my opinion, the best I have ever seen in this activity. What most viewers don't understand is just how difficult it is to simultaneously slow down, speed up, crescendo, and decrescendo while still making it sound like only one person is playing. It requires every single performer to be hitting their instruments with the same technique, velocity, and touch. And this difficulty was CONSTANT throughout the entire runtime. From a musical perspective this show was nuts. Difficulty in the writing, consistent acceleration and deceleration, not to mention the time signature changes. For a good 90 seconds of their show, the performers were switching between a loop of 19/16 to 15/16 to 11/16, all while maintaining their level of clarity (my only gripe is that the quad line was not as clean as the other sections in parts). From a visual performance perspective every movement was very clean and again fit into those odd time signatures which add that extra layer of content score. The movements were precise which requires every performer to move their bodies the exact same way. Even slight discrepancies can cause visual clarity to be lost, but they managed to pull it off.
Jimmy you mean 2019 not 2018 because 2018 did not outscore this. But it's really hard to compare scores from year to year it's even hard to compare scores from show to shows with different panels different circumstances and different expectations.
