It looks like I've missed the monorail cycles and river rafts as transport rides. This is because in OpenRCT2 they only appear in gentle and water rides respectively whereas in Classic and I assume also vanilla they appear in both categories. I myself have never considered them transport rides which is why I completely forgot about them. To give some quick advice for both of them: don't use them, they're terrible. They can look cool, especially the river rafts, but they're incredibly slow and have a low throughput, especially the monorail cycles.

Rides that can't go uphill at all? Yikes! You should do a video on them anyway. "Worst 'rides' in the game!" would be a fun topic for a video I'd say. Rock on sir!

Hi Marcel, I'm the guy who messaged you on twitter a while back about crashing chairlifts. I'm still having that happen to this day so I'm commenting here to see if anyone else has had problems with this in the latest stable or development builds. Basically when a chairlift car gets to the second station it flies off the end instead of going around the turning part. Two cars do this each time and then the rest stall behind it. Only happens on certain areas of the map, seemingly randomly but mostly concentrated in the north-eastern part. If anybody has additional information on this please let me know, I'm kind of put off by this because I do quite like to use chairlifts since they have a nice look in scenic areas.

@@AissurDrol Hey! I had the same issue and posted it in the openrct2 subreddit a while back. The devs were unable to recreate my issue, even with the save file, but it seemed to fix itself when I updated to a newer build. I've updated with the development edition since and the problem has not occurred since. For note: I use chairlifts frequently (at least one per park).

Warren Cash That only tells me that particular implementation as is wasn't suitable. Not denying it could be very difficult to properly implement it without rewriting a lot of other logic but I'm also not denying it's certainly achievable.
@daniellee4003
@daniellee4003 4 года назад
You can still trap guests by accident with any pathfinder implementation by just removing a path to an "island" that's still connected by paid transport ride. (Guests without money will be stuck.) So from there, you could either let lost peeps take transport rides for free (this could break stuff if always on: so it should be an option, and also the ride data structure needs to store this new flag) or you could provide a reasoning for lost peeps so the player knows to fix these peeps themselves. But that also would only really work with a pathfinder where guests only perform actions if they can leave the park afterwards (or if transport rides only cost once per peep or something - an infinite use ticket). Oh, and how do you handle staff? Should specific staff be stuck to their placed zone, or should they be able to take transport rides? Should this option be per staff member or per staff type? Should they queue or not? Should an entertainer be able to entertain guests in the same train? How do non-enclosed rides work with that? Surely an entertainer shouldn't work on a raft... What happens if staff is on a ride that breaks down? Do they teleport off the train? Do they get stuck? Can a repairman fix the ride that they're currently riding on? Should they always fully repair the ride that they're riding on? Should there be staff only transport rides? Then there's the big question of: how do you even determine the time it takes a transport ride to go from two locations? Distance and average speed? Or does each train need store the last travel, and then pass that data to the stations to save? tldr: you'll basically have to rewrite a lot of how peeps/guests/rides work overall. and openrct2 is programmed with a lot of several thousand line files, so good luck with that. also localisation

@MegaFelicks Hi, OpenRCT2 Dev here - The existing pathfinding is incredibly simple, by necessity and because that's how Chris Sawyer did it. Implementing new pathing can and has been done, but it has some major disadvantages - mostly performance related. Smart pathfinding is easyish. Doing it without reducing the game to 2 fps is considerably harder, and that's before you run into pathfinding bugs.

Something to add about the chairlift: When you build the 1st station, the best place to put the entrance is the last piece before the lift begins, but on the 2nd station, the best place for the entrance is at the very end where the chairlift ends. Kinda weird, but that's where the chairlift like to load and unload the guests

It’s too crowded here and I’ve run out of money. The tru RCT pro doesn’t actually max charge, you can fleece them while keeping them happy and that = more guests, kinda like real life. Sawyer needed a business partner but something was clearly wrong with him to program RCT in Assembly himself then go live in a cave, that way he would have never got involved with Atari as well and wouldn’t have had to sue everyone after the fact. A business mind would have had him as a full creative control role in the company and he wouldn’t have to write a single line of code, just overview the codemonkey, graphics and design teams and tell them what’s right and not right.

It's worth mentioning that in OpenRCT2 the miniature railway can have straight sections built on paths, allowing for grade-level crossings without needing to go over or under. This is useful when adding a transport ride to an already-developed park since you don't need to worry about rerouting paths. Thankfully the guests will automatically stop if a train is passing in front of them, so there's no need to worry about them getting run over!

I worked at the Ecomuseum of Marquèze in France, where we have a 4km historic train line leading from the museum's entrance to the historical village in the forest. While at the entrance, wich is the old train station, we have switches and side tracks, at the "terminus" we don't, so for return trips we just roll backwards with the engine pushing the train, and with someone at the rear being the eyes of the driver. @powerhouseofthecell9758
@powerhouseofthecell9758 4 года назад
A track height cost increases are at most one byte of disc space per ride type and a few extra words of assembly. Excitement ratings may be more complicated and stored in two bytes per ride, but it's an intermediate value for figuring out if a peep will ride or not. Better path finding for a 1999 game, even with an algorithm first developed in 2006 would require a few bits per tile for each of the 64k tiles per ride, and several more bits per tile to handle things like bathrooms, food stalls, seating, and garbage cans. This would require at least 4 megabytes of RAM for pathfinding maps alone, using current pathfinding algorithms that weren't invented until three years after RCT3 came out. That does not include the variable but enormous numbers of cycles used to recalculate the flow field when placing or destroying a path tile, attaching a queue to a path, building a new shop, bench, or trash can. Not does it include the likely dozens of cycles used reading and updating path movement per peep per square moved through in about a half-second. 1999-available pathfinding would need quite a bit of RAM for the path finding and perhaps thousands of cycles to utilize the paths for each of the thousands of peeps in an amusement park. TL,DR: The pathfinding algorithm used by the peeps in RCT2 was almost optimal for the scope and hardware limitations. The theoretically best of 1999 is what made Simcity 2013 so slow.

Minus the lift, the chairlift is my least favorite but that is sometimes the only realistic option. I kind of wish they had switch tracks though where that some stations could briefly double back on themselves or you could share mainlines between multiple stations. I always thought the monorails and trains were most useful- good throughput and good looking! The chairlift is meh, but I can see where it might be handy in a couple spots. As for the lift, in it's "intended" role it's garbage- but my goodness it's been a massive bonus for the community. Some of the most wild themed "things" out there are built around these rides, as you've no doubt seen sometimes. The one that immediately jumps to mind for me was on a multiplayer server some time ago (the TVAZ EU server if memory serves) which consisted of a lift that descended into a sizable pit area full of fire and lava. It was called the "Hellevator" and it just trapped bad guests down in "hell" forever. Everyone on the server was renaming the guests in there as people we didn't like, crashing coasters into it, very good times.

If there are mods that allow it, I'd love to see some extra locomotive types added for the Miniature Railway in particular. Scale replicas of say, a passenger Diesel Locomotive (BR Class 55 "Deltic", Santa Fe F7, etc.) or a streamlined Steam Locomotive (LNER A4 Pacific or a New York Central Mercury, etc.) going down the track with all their sounds would be great to see in-game!

I use a slightly different strategy than you for chairlift timing-I always set it up so that the wait is total ride time ÷ number of chairs. (This usually requires some tuning, but the goal is for one to leave the instant the next one arrives.) That keeps a continuous flow of chairs at the stations, without any long droughts. The result might be the same in terms of guest satisfaction, but I like the effect more.

I remember always using the trams in my park but i would build them completely underground including the station since that is how my brain figured they were supposed to be used and had no idea there was a stat penalty for this. i also always thought that guests used them as transport rides to get to there favorite rides but I did always find it funny how some of them would take the tram to one station the walk all the way to a totally different area of the park and now i know why. this makes me realize how much time i have wasted in trying to optimize the station locations and would even try and put the entrance the the more popular rides and coasters near a subway station. but i guess that just makes too much logical since to ask for in a game that was written entirely in assembly with very minimal AI.

Transport Rides reduces chance of guests getting exhausted by walking too long, by providing chance of guest to be dispersed without loitering. This can sometimes be financially beneficial as well. Possibly allowing guest to visit all the rides faster so that they can spend money faster. Though such benefit is limited as ride target selection via park map use aint gonna cooperate with transport rides, but it is helpful regardless. It also absorbs guest so that path can be less crowded. You can do same with high capacity rides but they have tendancy of attracting too many guests, resulting in overcrowding in paths nearby. Transport ride is free of this issue as guest will just ride it randomly whenever they encounters it

Two things you missed (if I'm not wrong) :) - The suspended monorail has one redeeming quality: it's the transport type with the highest base excitement score. - The excitement score of the chairlift increases as the base speed decreases. (ex. low speed = higher excitement than max speed)

something I found out with the Miniature Railway recently, if you cross the Miniature Railway track with the footpath the guests will stop after they hear the train whistle when it gets close to the path. One important thing that didn't get mentioned with the chairlift in regards to cost is that even though at ground level it works out to be twice the cost of the railway, it would still work out to be cheaper than it because it doesn't require building a loop. Therefore it still works out to be cheaper than it unless you were building a shuttle style railway but even then the chairlift would outclass it in guest throughput so it would still be better.

True, the chairlift is so "slim/narrow" that one tile has two tracks. Only way you can sort of do that with the others is if you stack them on top of each other (even then it's not the same).

I don't think steamtrains being able to shuttle is a bug. Real steam locomotives have been used to shuttle carriages, however usually the locomotive will detatch and switch rails so it can re-attatch on the back (still facing the same direction though). I can see how switching rails would be incredibly difficult to mod in though.

I don't think it'd be that bad, actually. We can already put multiple track pieces in the same place, so all we would really have to do is make an activator rail (á la Minecraft) which sends a signal to pieces like that.

I thought the transports were dumb, but then I realized that they could be used to great effect. Depending on how you lay out your park, You can utilize a transport to pick up guests at the entrance & drop them off in the money generating spots on you park. In this way I can force guests to go where I want them too. Another method is to do a single trail park, "not always possible," you can drop off new & old guests in the far back of your park, forcing them to walk past all the shops & rides. Next to all the transport entrances & exits I always put my crt yards, entertainers, security & shops to further try to absorb the customers money & increase happiness. While the actual "ride" itself generates negative income, I find that I can burn through my customers pocket books faster with it, & thus they leave sooner. This way I can increase income to the park, & accelerate the rate of progress. A good transport system has made some of my parks way better, & I look at them as a huge upgrade to parks that are worth all the money you can throw at them.

When my parks would get busier, I would want people away from the entrance and in an area where there was more space. I would build a one entrance monorail in the busy area, with the exit on the other side dropping them off. I could swap this around if the entrance area was too quiet. While it's true that guests don't see the monorail different to any other ride, it is a helpful guests displacer when you need it.

I know I commented a half year ago, but slight update. I like transport rides. I build them to connect the entire park. This cuts down on crowding on the park's midways and thus makes the park more realistic and guests gets less unhappy. They also contribute to park value on park value park scenarios. I play the deluxe edition and build a railroad or monorail. Both if land permits it. Naturally I focus mainly on build rollercoasters.

I love using the monorail if I can create a long enough track that they can climb up 1 height block at full speed instead of going up 3 blocks at once. Have you ever tried that? I also always use transport rides to get guests away from busy places and launch them somewhere less popular. I only use a double entrance if the way back is useful and I mostly adjust the length of the queue line to only one block or two where I would use 6-12 blocks to get rid of crowded places :) I just discovered your videos and I'm so excited to see this channel is STILL active! Is it possible to build a hybrid of a transport ride and a coaster type with booster pieces to boost the speed of the transport cars using the “arbitrary ride type change” cheat? I understand that vanilla won’t have this, but for those who do use OpenRCT2, is this feasible?
@MarcelVos
@MarcelVos 4 года назад
I've tried a couple of things and steamtrains and monorail trains seem to be immune to fast chainlifts and booster pieces, so that doesn't work. You could always use the minigolf holes to make it teleport to the next station, which is even faster.
@ryanadamson2146
@ryanadamson2146 4 года назад
In OpenRCT2 there is actually a cheat to apply a chain lift to any track type and another cheat to allow for any speed on chain lifts. Doing that you can essentially force your ride to go any speed you want over the ride even when going uphill.

The interesting inverse to having the transport rides all underground is to have all paths underground. I OFTEN do this as you DO NOT NEED TO HIRE ANY HANDYMEN as a result - guests CANNOT puke or litter on underground paths (at least in vanilla) This also means no need for security because guests only vandalize when there is puke/litter. Then all you need is mechanics. It can be helpful when trying to maximize guests to the point of running into the sprite limit, and is also a great and fun/interesting way to design a really different park. Thanks for all the great video! I learned a lot as always :)
