I completely agree with hating Obscura Ascendancy. I was so disappointed when it was spoiled, as you really have to jump through some serious hoops and heavily warp your deck build to even attempt to pull it off. And in EDH, its just not worth all that. Your design is much more appealing and can actually do something!!
That style of design is certainly interesting, but I think there needs to be a point where you "clear the checkpoint" and just start reaping the rewards. Especially when cards like Thousand Moon Smithy exist - which just ask you to cast spells of a certain type and provide a scaling reward.
