Excellent vlog. Really useful organisational tips. A lot depends how many records you own to a certain degree I find sorting jazz the hardest. Some do it alphabetically, you could do it by type; big band, vocal, sax, trumpet, guitar, piano or even by record label and issue date (discogs lends itself quite well to this method).

I do genres too (jazz, rock, metal, electronic)...And then within genre, by release date. I like seeing different artists next to each other on my shelf. Thankfully I don't have so many records to where that makes things difficult to find.

Thanks my friend. Music has been my life since I was since I was 4 years old. I fell in love with a 45 my parents bought me and I played it over and over and over while talking back to her in the speaker. It was Debbie Boone's You Light Up My Life LOL!!! Music has such stronger markers for different points in my life and I guess this is the result lol. Thanks for watching.

Very informative and helpful. I’ve got my collection organized A-Z but that’s it. I need to get it organized by genre but it seems like such a daunting task to tackle that I keep putting it off. This helps. Any other pointers you have, send my way!

Hi Brandon, I came back to this video because I want to start to reorganize my collection and I got some really nice inspiration here. I love your system! My collection reached around 1500 records now and I slowly start to have problems to find stuff. Seems like my old system became outdated. Like you said: The best way is that you find your stuff directly and the system makes sense to yourself. I decided that I will try to sort by labels for some genres. I will separate my jazz between: Blue Note, Impulse, Prestige, Verve, ECM etc. Same for Krautrock and Progrock. Love the idea of having a Vertigo Swirl box. Thanks for sharing your system! I don't have to mention how impressive it is :) Awesome my friend! Armien

That is awesome my friend. Hope the great reorganization goes well. You could all do like in High Fidelity and do it "autobiographical" lol. I always laughed at that because it seem virtually impossible lol. Make sure you do a video a video and share afer you complete it.

Hello... I love what you got going here with this "Record Store" system... It looks AMAZING! And I can so see me doing something along these lines albeit with a smaller collection. But over the years my collection will have room to grow with a good foundation due to your inspiration. Thanks for sharing this...

Thanks so much my friend. I think since this video I pulled out and sold about 400 lps. and maybe added 150 or so back in. I basically pulled everything that wasn't NM to M and got rid of it. I think that is one awesome thing about a collection is that it can change as you change as a collector and 5 years from now look so different than it does today. I wish you total happiness and fun in which ever way you collection is going at any point in time my friend!

Hello from Sydney Australia. Great collection and organisation. A couple of things. I understand separating by genre though it's not something I do myself, except for my Classical section. I have jazz & blues LP's but not enough to justify a sub-section. (I have a lot more Blues on CD though). However I'd be inclined to put those artist subgroups alphabetical within the general jazz section but still the individual tabs. Brilliant idea with the Coltrane label tabs. Also isn't it 'Wayne Shorter' not 'Wanye'. Looks like a spelling error lol. As you say, it's whatever works for you. Great video. Now subscribed. Cheers mate 😎👍

I'd have to say, this is definitely an amazing display you have, you say you give your collection a record store feel but in my opinion, your display is better than any record/music store I've ever been to, I'm slowly but surely working my way up to having a huge music collection, I currently have 80 pieces of music in my collection, 40 LPs, 39 CDs, and 1 cassette!!

Like you, I really dig the "record store vibe" in a collection set up. I have all of my vinyl in thick double walled show boxes...it's not the most space saving way of storing vinyl, but it's so much nicer to be able to flip through the stacks vs the expedit system...although I'm running out of room!!! Expedits are likely in my future whether I like it or not....Also, really like what you did with your name plates in the metal section, very cool and creative...like an old school record store.

Definitely a great, great collection, this video could be called "My personal record store tour",I love your way to organize your collection, actually I have a "strange" way to organize mine, I never really organized it like I should do, It's like from "calm/soft" music (Pop/love songs,etc...) to "hard" music (Hard Rock/Metal etc...), I don't organize by Aphabetical order but each artist/band is organized by chronological order (I just have around 200 vinyls so that's ok but when i'll get more i'll need to change that) but, your way to organize is really much better, and more for a collection like yours, oh, by the way, I love this "cassette wall"! ^^
@mrhoffame
@mrhoffame 10 лет назад
Thanks man. You are 100% correct. I think the current size of ones collection really determines the best way to organize it. I have never heard/ love the way you said you do it from soft to harder music. That is pretty freakn' cool. Would love to flip through your stuff and see it. Kind of reminds me of High Fidelity when he said he was organizing his "autobiographical" lol.

Love those Jazz/Blues/Rock Section record store bins -- Man, if I ever have enough space in some room in my next place, that is the ideal way to organize my collection and flip through them, with title cards. The Ikea type shelves always look very nice too. (Hey, I spotted a Joan Jett/Runaways marker -- have you ever shown your discs on those?). Did you build the bins in you shelving unit yourself or purchase them? Most collectors seem to store their collection in Kallax shelving, but I prefer the “flipping through bins” feel of a record shop like you have.
@mrhoffame
@mrhoffame 5 лет назад
Yep. Kallax shelves on the bottom with homemade bins on the top. When I moved here I didn't have any access to a saw or anything so I just went to home depot and they actually cut the pieces for me and brought them home to make a simple box that a 12 year old can make and then painted them lol. I love the flip style too. So much easier to enjoy your collection that way.

It makes sense except I do like to keep all works by one artist together. The different types of jazz can be separated because there are few artists that do both smooth jazz and hard bop. I guess as you approach mainstream jazz like Bobby Watson it could get a little tricky. You could also separate hard bop from the organ-guitar soul jazz sound. You could also sort the jazz section by the headlined session star's instrument by keeping say Miles Davis and Lee Morgan together as trumpeters. I actually file the artists entirely alphabetically but the various artists' compilations break down in similar fashion to your collection.
@mrhoffame
@mrhoffame 7 лет назад
Is your jazz "section" the largest part of your collection?
@DorianPaige00
@DorianPaige00 7 лет назад
I haven't carved out a jazz section yet but am highly considering it.  Everything is alphabetical but the various artists compilations always present a real challenge considering I have two bookshelves full with probably another yet to be filed.Soul is most definitely the most I have of any style which considering that perspective leads away from ever breaking it down further into subgenres.  Most soul albums have several different subgenres and styles on them like disco, funk, adult contemporary (which was always too vague and elusive), Quiet Storm, swingbeat, hip hop soul, and pop.  I also would always insist on keeping all the works by one artist together unless it's someone as diverse as Ray Charles who had entire albums of early R&B, country, standards, and instrumental jazz.

Hi Brandon, why would u have all your Bruce Sprungsteen vinyl together ie artist with more than five albums and spread the springsteen cds over the decades? Im a little confused. im finding it difficult to decide what to do with hard rock metal and clsssic rock, ie do i have them all seperate or mix classic rock and hard rock, and metal seperate or have metal and hard rock together and classic rock seperate. aaarrrgghh. Can u help? Andy H
@mrhoffame
@mrhoffame 6 лет назад
LOL Ha Ha! I feel you your pain. To answer the first question...I would only put all of the artist work from different decades together, such as the Bruce Lps, if I actually created a Tab/Divider for that artist. Now with the cds you see all those tabs with artist names, but I really wasn't dividing the artist out of from the general cd genres. Those were mainly put there because I had them. (picked them up from an FYE that closed). I really was not separating the cds out by artist. I just kinda through those in there. Normally, such as in my current collection set up, you will on see all decades of an artist together when I create a tab with their name on it. As far as separating metal, hard rock, etc....Go with how you "feel it". For me a few things determine if I separate in specific genres. 1. How many records do I have in that genre could be a factor where I want to break it oup. 2. If I see a major difference where as other people may lump artist together. For example it drives me CRAZY to go into a record store and see Van Halen and AC/DC under the "metal" section lol. Can't stand it!!! Therefore the separation of metal and hard rock is an extremely sensitive subject to me so I separate them because I notice that difference way to much. Now separating Grunge and Hard Alternative Rock such a Nirvana and Shinedown is not as critical to me. I don't get offended by that so that I don't separate those with as much of a vengeance. Separating Death Metal and Thrash Metal is not a big deal to me so I put it all under metal where some guys go Death, Grind Core, Thrash, etc. Now Metal and Glam/Hair Metal is a very sensitive separation for me so I do separate those. So ultimately it is just about another way to express your feelings and thoughts towards music. Great thing is there often is no wrong answer. Just do as you feel. Nothing wrong with making one section too and labeling it "Hard/Classic Rock". Hope that rambling helped on some level lol.
@snakebite69
@snakebite69 6 лет назад
Brandon, i really appreciate your time on this reply. In my vinyl set up i have classic rock and hard rock in the same section and metal as one seperate section. The Scorpions and acdc are in the same section with the who the rolling stones and reo speedwagon. im thinking of pulling hard rock out and was initially thinking of amalgamating with metal, however i think i will have three seperate sections now. Your reasoning has helped me make my decision the way i feel.it. many thanks Brandon. ☺

Man, put it all in one category! Your record collection would look great in one giant timeline... If you need A. Morissette as you put it, you just go mid 90's or early 2000's for Dido. I have one category, called Great music, includes Soundtracks, Live albums et aL. (all Greatest Hits are stored separately in alphabetical order). wHAT think? This way you learn what everything looks like in context.

No way man!!! lol. This is my personal record store and that it is the way I'm keeping it lol. Like I said, it would totally drive me CRAZY to mix all this together. No way will my Cinderella ever be next to my Coltrane ...or Backstreet Boys next to Ghetto Boys :) Thanks for watching man. By the way, depending on the year of the Greatest Hits albums, I typically put them at the end of artist after the last studio album :) I would say I have one collection called "Great Music". That great music is broken down into "The Great Music Of Genres".

Organizing by genre is far from "whacky'.......unless one has only one or two genres of music.......Having eclectic taste, it's sensible to put things in "Glamrock", "soul", "psychedelic", "rock" , "ambient", "synthy", disco", "reggae"......... sections, It would be very silly to put Bowie albums amongst reggae.... ........or else you spend more time searching instead of playing music.

I certainly agree lol. I also think it depends a lot on "how" someone listening to music. Very rarely to I decide to go listening to a specific artist. Someone who does that probably benefits from alphabetical order. I on the other hand tend to flock to genres I'm in the mood for and not so much a specific artist so this method of organization works much better for my overall listening habit at home.

You don't come out and say how many albums you have all up. At no point do you give the audience a clue as to how many albums you own all up. It stands alone. Earth / Sunn O)))
