Have grown ariocarpus over 35 years, had six plants still have one very old retusus, just bought three fissuratus . learned why I lost many over the years, peat in potting soil! Very bad for these guys. My old retusus had only a few roots left, changed up use a non peat mix, lots of dolomite& lime stone mixed in, plants will be happy now, maybe I can keep them another couple of decades😁

Makes sense, Ariocarpus are known to hate peat. Can be too acidic moist retaining.. basically a bog. Nice to hear it from someone with first hand experience though, appreciated!

One areola, two areaoles. Great to see those Ario's. The agavoides might need a bit of TLC but the retusus looks fabulous. I kept my Ario's in pure mineral soil : gravel with loam and a tniy bit of fertile soil. Draining off water is the most important. I watered them only on warm periods and in winter they were kept dry. They are known as "difficult" plants but they are really easy to sow. With fresh and fertile seed you can have over 90% of hatching and the seedlings do very well. Seedlings of Ario were potted all together, separate from other cacti : just to be sure with the watering. Full sun, dry and cool conditions (winter), not much fertilizer, from time to time a spray/mist of water and occasionally a bed-time story and those little "living" rock cacti will reward you with flowers. And they don't need much space ! A bonus for a cacti enthousiast with a conservatory filled to the brim.

+jay0kew Thanks a million for your wonderful comment and all your fantastic info :-) and so true they are a real bonus with their wonderful small compact size they don't take up much space compared to all the big fellas haha! :-) thanks so much for watching and sending heaps of love and tons of happiness from right across the Emerald Isle for a FANTASTIC Tuesday ahead XXXXXX

+stef hendriks Thanks so much Stef for your wonderful comment :-) yes I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will flower this year for me, the lithops are growing really well but they still have their old skins on them so I won't be watering them until a few more weeks when they have shred their skins :-) thats brilliant news you have a dry place now to collect these plants, its always such a challenge keeping them dry especially in Ireland haha! thanks so much for watching Stef and sending you an abundance of love and heaps of happiness from right across the Emerald Isle and have a MAGICAL evening ahead XXXXXX

Hi Lyn! could I use just a regular potting mix or a seed starting mix with perlite tp pot my new echinopsis?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 8 лет назад
Hi there :-) yes if you can't get hold of cactus soil then you can use regular potting mix and add extra perlite to the potting mix, this will give the soil extra drainage and aeration and also prevents the soil from drying out like cardboard because of the peat that is added to most soil mixes these days but the added perlite still gives great drainage :-) I would mix up 50% of both perlite and soil, and I would use regular potting mix rather than seed starting mix as seed starting mix is not as nutrient rich :-) Sending you heaps of love and tons of happy growing from right across the Emerald Isle and have a FANTASTIC weekend ahead XXXXX
