Quite probably the greatest 18:57 on RU-vid ever recorded. Cut this man in half and he will have ‘Yes’ all through his body. He knows every song, every album, every chord change, every weird Jon Anderson lyric. He’s the master and I defy ANYONE to question this ranking. It definitely IS the ultimate list and we must bow to the master. “We’re not Worthy” “We’re not Worthy” Party on Scot……….
There can be no argument with a Yes fan's ranking and this is no exception, my favourite is and will always be 'The Yes Album', it's the one that I've played the most.
I was born in the fifhties, so I was able to witness the production of the seventies, probably the best decade ever. I was hearing a lot of bands (rock mainly), and also Symphonic Rock, Jazz Rock, Folk, Blues, Country, well you can see that I was a big consumer (up till today). When I bought Close to the Edge everything changed; I already had the previous YES albums, but this one blew me away. At this point, I must state that I am a musician (drummer), and this is the reason why I consider CTTE the best YES album of all. Of course, Tales from Topographic Oceans is extraordinary, and is the peak of what you can expect from a band that had made CTTE. They had charted all top sales and their live appearences proved how technical and intricate YES sound was. For us, musicians, it was an incredible challenge, for they were all ``virtuosos`` and Jon Anderson was singing for his life. Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe were on top of all the lists of their instruments, as Bill Bruford was. This is the changing point, in what YES career is concerned. Bruford was the drummer that built YES identity, through a complexity of patterns and rythms he created, alongside Chris Squire, a Rickenbaker man, with a stonewall sound never heard before. For those who like to hear (or play) drums, CTTE should be an obligation, a trully Bible of percussion work, with a perfect "mélange" with the music that his mates were producing; Bill was (is) a master in the use of skins and cymbals, a "monster" in what music and silent moments are concerned. The simple and personal choice of his "sound" (there´s no other snare drum sound equal), tells you this man knows his job, Obviously I could dwell on all technical aspects of this work of art, but what really matters is the fact that YES would never be the same, again. Now you are thinking that I neglect Allan White´s work, on Tales from Topographic Oceans; not at all. What I think is what this piece of art would sound, if it was Bruford behind the drum kit. Of course Allan is (was RIP), a very good drummer, and perhaps it was unfair to him, having to replace Bruford, after CTTE. The first 5 albums are the ones that buid and consolidated YES identity, and when Bruford left it was King Crimson that profited with his genious and the band began driving a new road (era) of exquisite and intricate music, far from what KC had done before. That is a fact, and you can state it by listening to those albums, in which Bruford was present, in the life of those bands. In those days, back in the seventies, YES was considered one of the most difficult sounds, to replicate on stage, and Bruford was an "allien", in terms of inventive patterns and drum contributions. I think that you can guess, by now, my favourite list of YES albums; of course, Tales from Topographic Oceans is one of the best five, but Close to the Edge is number one. We´re talking 1972!!!, and the peak of creation, for all the reasons I stated back then. To finalize, I must say that I didn´t expect such a quality record, with this formation, in "The mirror to the sky"; it is still very fresh, but a nice sensation of the YES complexity (yet simple approach), that deserves a lot of more listenings. I am rather pleased with what I heard, and certainly will hear more. It will surely climb, in some of your lists.
sometimes when I listen to Fragile I think maybe this is my favorite album? but then I listen to Relayer again and understand that this place cannot be taken away from him.
Great review. I love your enthusiasm and energy. I know Yes isn’t the same band but I am 63 years old and I am not the same person I was 50 years ago. I am glad someone is keeping the name on the radar.
I thought I was the only one who counted ABWH and Keystudio as legit YES albums, so thanks for the backup. It's so interesting to see YES albums ranked, and your ranking was no less interesting.
Oh man, I didn’t even see that you had a “remixed” version of the Yes countdown! 😂 Now new and improved with ABWH and MTTS! 😂😂 I like the shout outs for Miracle of Life, Universal Gardens, Keysstudio and Benoit David!

Highly entertaining. I don't necessarily agree with everything you said but I go back to Fragile when I first heard Yes and the rest is history. I have mountains of Yes and member related music. The end of my computer list says "All Roads Lead To Yes". 😀
Thanks Man, it was so cool to hear your enthusiasm for this wonderful band, they championed exploring musicianship and creativity to their peak, loved this video 😎
Even at their nadir, Yes have always been fascinating!!! Unlike many of their peers, Yes have never forgotten their roots. My all time favorite band. Hands down.
The Quest made me fall back in love with Yes many years away. I love and Mirror to the Sky is great , my new favourite all time yes song is All Connected. Going For The One Is still my all time favourite
The most impressive thing is not the fact that you know perfectly every prog band, bit the fsct that you probably have all of the albums that a prog band has ever done
Yes!! Yes!! Yes!! Thanks, Scotty. As always we love your channel. Just right YES ranking. Always will love 'Topographical Oceans'! Talk to you soon. Best!!
1 - Relayer 2 - Close To The Edge 3 - The Yes Album 4 - Fragile 5 - Tales From Topographic Oceans 6 - Drama 7 - Going For The One 8 - Magnification 9 - Tormato 10 - 90125
This video was awesome. I'm 36 but Yes was my childhood soundtrack thanx to my father. I'm a huge Prog Fan and alot of ppl around don't understand why I love prog hahaha. Anyway I haven't heard the new album but my top 3 are Fragile, The YES Album, and growing up in the 90s it has to be Talk. Keep up the great videos and rock on! 🙏
Great ranking ha! I was pleasantly surprised with your ranking go Magnification! Have a love/eh relationship with that one, but I agree with Wakeman that he would have done a better job with the orchestration considering his recent solo output ... i wish he would do another one with Jon A. You are right Mirror to the Sky is the prog Album, and def best with JD on it. Relayer is CTTE 's dark little sister? haha, love that.
Fragile was first Yes album I heard, probably about 1980 so will always have a special place in my heart, CTTE, Relayer and Drama are personal favourites.
I’m sorry for where I put tales haha I still like it a lot I love most yes albums. 1. Close to the Edge 2. Going For The One 3. Relayer 4. The Yes Album 5. Drama 6. 90125 7. Fragile 8. Magnification 9. Keys To Ascension 10. The Ladder 11. Time And A Word 12. ABWH 13. Tormato 14. Mirror To The Sky 15. Tales Of A Topographic Ocean 16. Talk 17. Fly From Here 18. Yes 19. The Quest 20. Big Generator 21. Heaven And Earth 22. Union 23. Open Your Eyes
@TheProgCorner I loved the video I fully respect your list, like I say I like most yes albums apart from the bottom 6 I could listen to any off them any time any place
Great ranking and show about my favorite and the best band ever . YES. Scot keep dropping knowledge and still the BEST PROG channel out there. Peace ✌️
Because of you, I not only became a big Yes fan, but a big Tales fan too. You convinced me to listen to Tales more than once, and after listening to Tales again, again and again I finally fell in love with it! Its one of my favorite albums of all time(second favorite Yes album right behind Close to the Edge). Soo yeah Thank You Scot!
Scott, that was the best album ranking Ive ever seen. I agreed with it 100%. I even put Tales over Close to the Edge like you did but if it was acceptable, I'd put them both at a tie for number 1.love your energy. Saw Yes first time at Fabulous Forum Close to the Edge tour with Bruford. My favorite band as well since Fragile.
Actually It was White on drums, not Bruford at the Forum. I did see Bruford play the drums for Genesis on the Trick of the Tale tour but saw Bruford AND White together on the Union Tour.
Wow. I love your list. Sometimes when I watch your vids I feel like I am listening to myself. Anyway, I would switch around a few things, but for the most part I would be right there with you. "Tales" is also my favorite album of all time, but I would probably rate it #6 or #7 in their catalog, objectively speaking. CTTE is their clear #1.
_Tales from Topographic Oceans_ ALL THE WAY!!! And this is not a once in a long while listen for me either. I listen to this album regularly. Some parts of it are some of the most beautiful, heaven sent music ever set to vinyl.
Fantastic ranking: your encyclopedic knowledge of the band, and enthusiasm, are second to none. Just wanted to point out one typo, you accidentally put. CttE second, as you know it should be first ;)
Good one!!! You know I have CTTE #1 in my “Perfect Prog Albums” episode. It’s impossible. This band, man. After all these years they still fascinate and frustrate me like no other…
My top 10 (cuz i don't care about the rest): 1. Relayer 2. Close to the edge 3. Going for the one 4. Tales from topographic oceans 5. Fragile 6. The yes album 7. Drama 8. Keys to accession 9. Yes 10. Tormado
A love your reviews. Its good to see such enthusiasm. Even when I disagree, you make a well thought out passionate case for your choice. Anyway long live Yes! I love this group ever since I heard 'Close to the edge.' When I first heard it I was intrigued by it, not even sure I liked it. But serval plays later was won over for good!
I would have included *From A Page*. 24 in total. 1. Close To the Edge 2. Going For the One 3. Fragile 4. Tales From Topographic Ocean 5. Keys To Ascension (Studio) 6. Yes 7. Tormato 8. ABWH 9. 90125 10. The Yes Album 11. Magnification 12. Relayer 13. The Ladder 14. Time and a Word 15. From a Page 16. Drama 17. Mirror To the Sky 18. Talk 19. Union 20. Big Generator 21. The Quest 22. Fly From Here 23. Open Your Eyes 24. Heaven and Earth
Yea, my list differs somewhat. But that's why we have chocolate and vanilla in the world. The freedom to choose to our individual tastes. The important part is we all tuned into this channel because we are all fans of what is without a doubt the greatest prog rock band of all time. Keep up the great work, Scott. And a big thanks for posting 'The Prog Corner'.
One of the reasons Yes is my favorite band is how different every fan’s perspective is. Really interesting to me!!! Thank you for being here!!! ❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍
Great review!!! I agree with all your observations. Very accurate perspective. I do like the Downes Rocker because it’s got a real quirky vibe, ‘Living Out Their Dream’. love your enthusiasm, thanks for the analysis! Thanks so much! My favorite all time YES Album is The Yes Album. The first Album to feature Steve Howe.
So nice to see Tormato slightly less hated than usual 😂 like, it's really not all that bad - just relistened a week ago and Madrigal totally redeems it
Yes 69 as #1?! That's so rare it's a well done steak! Love Looking Around, Yesterday and Today, and Sweetness. And at this point I often forget Every Little Thing was a Beatles song originally.
Brilliant Scot! Your top 2 are my pick, always oscillating between the two which one is my favorite but your top 5 are my top 5. Then I can't rate them. Regardless, they're the greatest ever! Thanks for continuing to review YES!🤩
Great episode, here is my top 10: 1. Tales from Topographic Oceans 2. Relayer 3. Close to the Edge 4. Going for the One 5. Fragile 6. Drama 7. The Yes Album 8. 90125 9. Magnification 10. Time and a Word, cheers and all the best.
Thanks for sharing your list. Yes is also my all time favorite band. Here's my rankings: 1. Close To the Edge 2. Fragile 3. Yes Album 4. Relayer 5. Going For The One 6. Tales of Topographic Oceans 7. Drama 8. Magnification 9. Time And A Word 10. Yes 11. ABWH 12. Talk 13. 90125 14. Keys To Ascension 15. Fly From Here 16. Tormato 17. The Ladder 18. Big Generator 19. From A Page 20. Union 21. Massive Yes fan. My rankings... 1. Going For The One 2. Tales From Topographic Oceans. 3. Close To The Edge 4. Relayer 5. Fragile 6. The Yes Album 7. Drama 8. Tormato 9. Magnification 10. Key studio 11. Fly From Here 12. Time And A Word 13. Yes. 14.Big Generator. 15. Talk 16. Mirror To The Sky 17. The Ladder 18. 90125 19. The Quest 20. Heaven And Earth 21. Union 22. Open Your Eyes. Am I missing one?
Man!!! I can't believe I didn't know Mind Drive and That, that is.... I never heard Keys to Ascension. Simply fantastic to discover this new yes album now
Fun Ranking, I agree on most, but the debut should be a little bit higher. Ps Where would you place "From A Page" within your ranking (yes i know its an EP, but im curious!)
IMO the studio ranking is: 1. Close to the Edge 2. Relayer 3. Fragile 4. The Yes Album 5. Going for the One 6. Tales 7. Drama 8. Tormato 9. The Ladder 10. 90125
I feel about Topograhic today, the same I felt about it when it came out. Some great moments but it lacks coherency. Sections sound "stuck together" and are melded with open ambiance as opposed to the terrific transitions found on CTTE and Relayer. It's more of a Steve Howe album since he's soloing (way too long) on most every section. Squire's bass is lacking the contrapuntal layers he's displayed so well on other albums. White is a bit sloppy -- a rock and roll drummer doing his best within a more artistically demanding environment. (Something he managed very well on Relayer). And yeah, it can get indulgent. Overall, it'd make a great single album but its length adds to the "epicness" of it all, but all in all, I'd put it as low as 6th on this list.
Top ten: 1. Relayer 2. Tales From Topographic Oceans 3. Going For The One 4. Close To The Edge 5. Drama 6. Fragile 7. 90125 8. The Yes Album 9. Tormato 10. Time And A Word
Tales is also my favourite. There's something special about these four tracks I can't explain. It's beautifully written, arranged and performed. Don't understand why Wakeman hates it because in my opinion he did some of the best playing he ever did. Listen to those magical big mellotron orchestrations. And by the way...Ritual is my favourite Yes track of all time.
The album brings more to the table but it took me a while to like it because it couldn't compete with 90125 which I really adore. But Trevor Rabin wrote a very good album after that with I Can't Look Away
@@danieleggenberger9034 I have an odd relationship with Big Generator. I get a little misty eyed because at the time I was very much in love with my girlfriend. We went on a major road trip the year Big Generator came out. It was one of five tapes that we had in the car (REM’s Document, The Stones’ Undercover, Simple Minds’ Sons and Fascination and Wall of Voodoo’s Call of the West were the other four) We drove up and down and all around and everywhere and those five tapes were our soundtrack for endless miles. Happy crazy times for sure.
Being a critical Yes fan I’m happy to say that Mirror to the Sky exceeds all expectations. Sounds incredible through a proper HIFi. I think the only reason Steve Howe sings is to contrast how good Jon Davison’s voice is. Great album. As for Union if you delete the Rabin songs it’s a good album.
@@TheProgCorner The problem is we expect Yes to be so much better. I attempted to listen to Open your Eyes a number of time but I don't think I've ever made it all the way through.
Another excellent job Scot. I do not disagree with your ranking, my friend. So, are we going to Italy 🇮🇹 this week? I just got the Steve Wilson remix of Aqualung in auction, autographed by Ian Anderson, and I have Paul Simon's new album Seven Psalms on order. I listened to it on stream, and it is so mesmerising
To those of us with real understanding, Tales is their major work and best album ever. The next 4 are in correct order so I'd only be quibbling about the rest.
I'm surprised you ranked Mirror to the Sky that low. When did you get the album and how many times have you heard it? I've only heard it 3 times in 4 days, so I want to wait a week or two to re-rank them all. I'll definitely have it ahead of The Ladder and Magnification, and probably The Yes Album, but I'm sweating it out deciding about Tormato and Drama. I also have to say considering your critique of it, "Circles of Time" is the one song that moved me to tears. And I mean that in a good way. An extraordinary performance by Davison, and according to him in one interview, it's a demo tape!
Circles is one of my favorite on there, sort of hits similarly to Ladies of The Dancing Water on Lizard. Just this shorter track that is absolutely beautiful. Not exactly the same emotion in the two tracks just thought it was an interesting comparison.
Admittedly, i am still missing a few albums from the discography, i dont have (but intend to buy) Mirror to the sky, fly from here, The quest, Talk, Big generator & Time and a word so my list is as follows 1. Going for the one 2. Close to the edge 3. Tales from topographic oceans (i put the hard yards in like you advised Scott! Now i love it!) 4. Relayer 5. Tormato 6. The ladder 7. The Yes album 8. Fragile 9. Magnification 10. Drama
From a Page is so good, and right over your shoulder throughout this video, let alone Yesterdays, also right there in the background, given America as a song not featured anywhere in these ranked albums, and those excellent Oliver Wakeman songs in From a Page, have to wonder where these would rank - probably somewhere around number 10 or so each, and would make a round 25 albums to rank - with you on your top 7, 100%, though I don't really get the Open Your Eyes hate, I'd have that more middle of the list, Union and Big Generator firmly at the bottom
1. Yes album 2. Tales from Topographic 3. Close to the Edge 4. Relayer 5. Fragile 6. Going for the One 7. Time and a Word 8. Drama 9. Talk 10. Tormato 11. Yes (69) 12. Keystudio 13. 90125 14. Big Generator 15. Magnification Etc... Need to listen to the newer stuff again. Union is ok, Open is ok, haven't actually listened to Ladder yet, some of it back in the day. 🤘🏼🎧
Marvelous! I still have yet to hear all of the albums, especially from Talk forward, so I don’t have a ranking. But I can say currently my top two are The Yes Album and Going For The One. I have stated many times that Olias of Sunhillow is my favorite album, but side 2 of Going For The One in its entirety, namely Wondrous Stories and Awaken played together as a single piece of music, is my favorite album side ever. I just prefer the entirety of The Yes Album more than side one of Going For The One, so The Yes Album just edges into number 1 for me.
Im not a really big Yes fan, but I do wanna get into it. This list is a pretty good suggestion list alongside ranking. I do like that you have an album atypical of a #1 spot, it shows how passionate you are about the band. As a big King Crimson fan I might say that THRAK is their #1 album, but Im too big of a sucker for Starless and One More Red Nightmare to not say Red is #1.
I'm astonished about this ranking. Although being a fan of Yes since 1973 (being 9 years old at that time) I've a totally different ranking. Especially the order of the weaker albums don't get my consent. "Open your eyes" weaker than everything else? Really? And that and "Union" weaker than "Heaven & Earth" ?!? "Talk" better than "Big Generator" ?!? And, well, often a subject to dispute: TftO is definetly *not* my favourite Yes album. So there are different worlds even in the world of yes fans.
It may be how the Yes albums match the "style" of music we gravitate towards in the other music we listen to. Like, if you like metal and harder stuff, then Relayer ranks higher and if you like more melodic and slow stuff, Heaven & Earth seems nice. Also, some fans really care about how is in the group at the time (like the "I'm not listening if Jon is not singing" crowd etc), and other fans just appreciate the music. You are right, there are different worlds even in the world of Yes fans!
I think I'm way more critical about a lot of the later Yes albums than you. Heaven & Earth is - apart from Subway Walls, which has some good moments - just bad imo. The Quest isn't much better. But Mirrors In The Sky is actually a decent albums. The title track is really strong. I hope they will release another album full of songs of that quality.
YES died with Chris Squire IMO. That being said, my all time favorite YES release is the over looked "Tormato". BTW the first concert I went to was "Going For The One" tour in 1977 with my late Mother when I was 12 years old. Incredible show. First time I had smelled Marijuana, roo😅
I'll tell you what...I fully expected Mirror to the Sky to be more "boring" from Yes. What's left of Yes? Steve Howe! Yeah, I know, he's not an original member, but he has been with Yes for sooo long. Who else has, that is currently with Yes? No one! Upon my second listen I am being pleasantly surprised. This is really a good disc! Howe's playing is really tasty and good. Sherwood's bass evokes Squire at times. The melodies are sinking in to really appreciate this latest offering. This is far better than the last 3 disc's. I am happily surprised and will certainly purchase this. For anyone thinking about buying Mirror to the Sky, listen to it at least 2 or 3 times before judging. You may be surprised as I have been.
@@Sammeep02 I know what you mean. Even though Davison has the tone, there is no passion to his voice. It seems lackluster to me. However, Cut from the Stars is an awesome song!
@@TheProgCornerI believe it was written by Roger Hodgson. That would have been interesting if Roger had wound up in Yes! Hmmm…maybe it could have worked? I like Roger.
Yo soy fan del Tales, mi favorito también, valiente decisión. El Drama está merecidamente alto también. The Yes Album me encanta, tiene temas icónicos, aunque le falte profundidad y matices es muy bueno. Gran y desigual discografía.
Scot did you see Abigail’s review of the Alvvays Blue Revv album? That album is so good even your wife will like it. I’m sending it to my 19 year old niece who is an incurable Swiftie.
Remember: I have no life. No kids, grandkids, hobbies, etc. So I listen to music. A lot of it. I strive to hear 400 new albums every year: 200 Prog and 200 whatever else (mainly indie stuff.) And I’m always (Alvvays) in my car for work so…
For gamers, The Ladders was also the soundtrack of Sierra Homeworld. I was already a fan of Yes, and as a kid was really happy when I open my game box and found out, not only have I got a nice game, but also a new YES album!!!!
The ranking is impressive, I love you adore "Going for the one" and "anderson wakeman bruford howe" but for me the best album is "Fragile" with a very close "Close to the Edge". I find "Tales from Topographic Oceans" good but somehow a bit boring. We can't always agree, personal taste is that: private. Only one question, I like your ranking, are you going to post rankings of classic rock bands??!! Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, CCR, Doors, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, Cream, Derek and The Dominos, Allman Brothers Band, David Bowie, T.Rex, Elton John, Van Morrison, Beach Boys, Santana, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Procol Harum, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen etc etc etc
My ranking: 1. Tales from Topographic Oceans 2. Relayer 3. Close to the Edge 4. Fragile 5. Going For The One 6. The Yes Album 7. Tormato 8. Drama 9. Fly From Here: Return Trip 10. Mirror to the Sky 11. Keys to Ascension (complete) 12. The Ladder 13. ABWH 14. Union 15. 90125 16. Big Generator 17. Talk 18. The Quest 19. Magnification 20. Open Your Eyes 21. Heaven & Earth Note: I did not include the first two albums because they hadn’t really found themselves until the third album. I pretty much rank all the Trevor Rabin albums about the same. They are all top-shelf prog pop. I find Union, as imperfect as it is, generally underrated and Magnification generally way overrated (to me it’s largely pretentious disingenuous cheese fluff). I’m really enjoying Mirror to the Sky… but being so new, its ranking is subject to change either positively or negatively, but probably not by much. Return Trip replaced the original Fly From Here, so I only included that one. I like Return Trip more because, with Horn’s vocals, it’s more authentic. Not only did Horn write it back in the early 80s, but it’s also the true sequel to Drama. Plus, the album was perfected and completed and even darkened a bit. Relayer and Close to the Edge are pretty much tied in my book. Tales from Topographic Oceans is simply the greatest album of all time.
I love the first two records. The Bruford/Squire rhythm section records should all be in the top 5 for their chemistry alone. Yes, Time and a Word, The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge.
YES, YES, YES!!!!! I guess they're gonna be my all time #1 haha I love how even though open your eyes is your bottom you still list some good songs off it...proof that nothing Yes did is inherently bad. Same with ELP and Genesis Return Trip>>>>OG Fly from here Yes 69 is underrated tbh I couldn't believe your comments on BiG Generator....Pretty risky putting Magnification, The Ladder (love the artwork btw), Keystudio, DRAMA in your top 10....but your top 5 was expected Top 6 in order: Going for the one, 90125, Yes Album, BiG, Talk, Fragile (YEEEEEP ALL 3 RABIN ALBUMS....Yeswest is YesBEST)
