Welcome to another cozy reading vlog! In this one, I'm re-reading all of my fave books from when I was a teenager. It was SO nostalgic to go back and read my favourite books from when I was 16ish. There were quite a number, but I ended up picking: Twilight by Stephanie Meyer, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky and Looking for Alaska by John Green. This is one of my favourite reading vlogs I think I filmed 😭

One of the things I really appreciate about Twilight is how perfectly age appropriate it is. As in, when I was a teenager, I too overanalysed every glance my crush gave me, every time our hands brushed over each other, and I remember my first breakup feeling like absolute end of the world. I feel like few other authors that I read as a teen actually managed to capture how exciting all those little things are to teenagers. And I lowkey appreciated lack of segs, too. That topic really scared me at the time, it was kinda comforting to read about a relationship, where both parties were perfectly fine with leaving it at a kiss and just hanging out all night. That was my teenage dream!

Right?! People hate it for it but damn this book just hits the spot if you're a teen. But I also get it - I would have despised this book had I read it for the first time as an adult 😅

I love Twilight to pieces. I too went through a fase when I hated the books, and the films, but, on a rainy day, a few years ago, I decided to re-watch the first film (that I love) and then I read all the books again, and Meyer published Midnight Sun, and now Twilight has a soft place in my heart because I really think that its girly and melancholic vibe helps me access my femininity on sad days. 😅😅

omg yes honestly the vibes of the twilight movies (soundtrack, scenery, colour grading) are so immaculate, in 2008 i was an 'edgy' twilight hater but now these are honestly some of my favourite comfort movies and i'm currently doing a rewatch :') (i don't think i have the resilience for a reread though)

It's definitely interesting re-reading books at different phases of our lives. Last year I re-read through all of Virginia Woolf's novels in order of publication. I first read them about 20 years ago, in random order, and have re-read a few of them since. The difference between reading To The Lighthouse as a 22 yr old, versus re-reading it as a 43 yr old (me, last year, in winter)... holy moly. I sobbed. SOBBED. And it's not even my favourite VW book (The Waves is my fave) - but the expression of a particular phase of life, and what I was going through at the time, hit me to my core. I've never read Twilight, nor have I seen the films. I've read Looking For Alaska. I saw the film of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but I've never read it. I'd like to though.

My dear Christy I subscribed to your channel almost exactly 2 years ago, in late March 2021. My first ever video of yours was "To the people who feel paused"- I then binge watched almost the entire channel content within 2 days. What appealed to me the most was that you're not afraid to be honest and vulnerable. I haven't missed a single video ever since. I'm happy to follow your journey to growth, success and happiness. This was so fun and really made me want to reread Looking for Alaska. My favorite John Green is Paper Towns because I feel like it goes even harder at tearing down the manic pixie dream girl trope, but I wonder how I’d feel about it as an adult.

I read Twilight in 2005 ~before it was cool~ and The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Looking for Alaska in 2006. Regarding Alaska being a manic pixie dream girl, I thought that Looking for Alaska did a good job of saying that she was more that what Pudge perceived her to be. There was a bit in the book when she was crying and she tells him that he loves the girl who plays video games and watches 🌽 but not the girl who shows up crying. I thought that line alone showed Pudge liked an idealized version of her, and not Alaska as she actually was. I remember feeling so strongly about that that when I read Paper Towns in 2008, I felt that John Green had recycled Looking for Alaska and did so with less subtly. At least with Alaska, I had the experience of getting to know along with Pudge. We're with him when he first meets her, and are able to see every step of their relationship, so we can decide that "oh the way that Alaska is acting is inconsistent with Pudge's perception of her." But with Paper Towns Q is already obsessed with Margo, everyone is telling him that Margo isn't all that, and he comes to an earth shattering realization that Margo is a person and not his fantasy of her. I just thought "duh, that was always obvious." And because I didn't care about Margo and because she voluntarily left and wasn't in any real danger, I didn't care about the mystery aspect of the book. With Looking for Alaska, I was definitely very interested in the mystery of The Big Thing, and finding out if it was intentional or an accident. Another thing that I really liked about Looking for Alaska was the discussion of religion and the afterlife. I felt that too many YA books at the time played it too safely when it came to controversial issues, so I liked that it dealt with that. I haven't gone back and reread it in the past 16-17 years though.

I haven’t seen too many reading vlogs, but I’m glad I watched this one. watching your reaction to Perks is so raw, and oddly, it makes me feel seen? I realized that I really haven’t been in community with many other avid readers (at least of heavier/more emotional books), so I haven’t often seen reactions I know I have mirrored in someone else. it was refreshing, and I’m feeling inspired to reread some of my more beloved books I had as a younger person :’)

Love your discussion about your journey hating effeminate things, I had a very similar experience with all the aspects and media you mentioned, love how relatable that is 😂❤ I think it speaks a bit on societal expectations and how we tried to rebel against those intrinsic parts of ourselves in an attempt to appear worthy to ourselves and others, and I love that we have both healed from that experience 🥰

i'm currently reading looking for alaska and was really put off at first by what you described- how miles sees her. but then i remembered talking to my friends when i was a teenager and i definitely knew people who were "in love" with attractive girls and romanticized them in that way without truly knowing them, so i do think it's somewhat realistic. it's a good thing that we recognize it as unhealthy, but as a teen you definitely put people on a pedestal and idolize them and think that it's love when in reality it isn't. i also saw some posts by john green and he seems aware of this/like that was what he was trying to do. for example he explains the knock knock joke alaska tells miles by saying it symbolizes how miles isn't able to answer because he doesn't know her (this is the quote: "I had all kinds of super symbolic reasons for this knock-knock joke about Alaska asking Pudge, "who's there?" and Pudge not being able to answer, about his failure to really know Alaska, about how her air of mystery was mostly about his just not being very perceptive, etc. ") also there's a scene where she tells him directly that he doesn't really know her. so that seems to be his intent. anyway it was the first time i read the book and i enjoyed it but like you didn't really connect emotionally or cried at all, but i can see myself as a teenager probably liking this a lot more (i'm 25 now) which makes sense because that's the target audience.

I read The Perks of Being a Wallflower when I was 15 and it was the book that’s made me cry the most ever since. When I read it, I didn’t remember that what happens to him also had happened to me. This book, alongside with Mysterious Skin, opened my eyes and made me face memories I was yet to comprehend. It’s funny because my emotional response to both the book and the movie was so intense and life-changing, but at the time I couldn’t really understand why. Then I rewatched the movie, knowing my why, and it still triggered me so heavily that I had a depressive episode, years after overcoming the depression brought by mine and Charlie’s common life experience. Last year I found something that I’d written when I bought the book. I had already read it in my computer in pdf, but of course I had to have a physical copy - though I never read it…,and I found a note about how confused I felt, how I could feel there was something I couldn’t understand inside of me, how my depression just could never fully go away because I’d feel it lurking at every corner and I knew it meant something deeper, but I couldn’t tell what. So, yeah… this book will always have so, so, so much meaning to me. Nothing could replace its impact.

I still love Twilight the book as an adult. The reason is simply that it's been written in an entertaining way. Does it have problematic issues? Yes. Does it hinder my enjoyment as an adult? Surprisingly, no - I think it's good to be aware of the issues, but in the end, the book captures really well the feeling of powerful first love and I enjoyed Bella's sarcastic remarks, etc. so much that reading the book now feels like watching a movie with warning labels: once you are aware that there are issues, you can adjust your thinking accordingly and then enjoy the experience with that awareness. :)

I was in high school in the 90s, and I feel like there weren't many books written for high school age teens. Or if there were, I didn't know about them. YA tended to skew younger... 12-14, rather than 16-18... There were Christopher Pike books, which I read in middle school, but after the age of 14, all the books I read were written for adults. Anne Rice, Stephen King, Frank Herbert, + whatever Harlequin romance showed up at my grandmother's house that month... 😅

There are times I'll be talking with my mom, and she'll stop and say something like, "Only you would use the word 'indefatigable' in casual conversation, and you're worried about your intelligence." Then I usually respond with "MoOoOoMmM" Although there is the downside of when I'm talking to my friends, and they're like, "I don't understand half of what you say sometimes, but that's cool." Christy, you have mentioned multiple times that your apartment gets very hot and sunny and you that can't swap out the blinds; have you considered curtains? You can buy cheesy tension rods for a few dollars and put cheap little curtains on them, totally nondestructive and very inexpensive. Another option: I have put a tinted film on my windows that block out a LOT of the sun and heat; you can find it online listed as sun blocking film/UV reflecting film/heat control window tint.
@christy-anne-jones

Renting is very strict in Australia. We're not allowed to put up new curtains or attach anything to the walls in any way ☹️ (we're also not allowed to paint walls, hang pictures or shelves, or put up window tint) We've asked our landlords to pay for tinting or even ceiling fans, and they said no. Where we live, your apartment/house gets inspected every three months, and if we were to have done any of that we would get in trouble. I'm so envous of people who live in countries where there's more freedom hahah. But thank you for your suggestions 💛

It's definitely John Green's thing to explore the manic pixie trope; he enjoys writing about a delusional boy's journey to realising he only loved the idea of the girl. In Looking For Alaska, Pudge had to accept that he knew nothing about his dream girl until he ultimately gave up trying to understand her- in his words, he stopped looking for a ghost who didn't want to be found. In Paper Towns, John explores the same theme again when Quinten spent a whole book convincing himself that Margo left clues for him to look for her only to discover that it was never her intention- so it turned out he didn't know much about his dream girl either. Looking For Alaska, despite its flaws, has a stronger emotional hold on its readers, making it more timeless even though Paper Towns may have conveyed the deconstruction of the manic pixie cliché better.

I knew the writing was bad while reading the Twilight Saga but there was still something addictive about it that kept you coming back for more, and I do enjoy the films (especially the soundtracks). I also read Midnight Sun when it was (finally) released, (I did my waiting, 12 years of it) and that is way more problematic, getting a whole chapter from Edward's perspective about how he's planning on killing everyone in the classroom to get to her, another whole chapter about climbing in her window to watch her sleep (and oiling the window so it doesn't squeek). But we also get a lot more Alice which I very much appreciated!! I just need a Twilight book from Alice's perspective instead of Edward's extremely problematic perspective. There was also a level of nostalgia, even in reading Midnight Sun, because you're already familiar with exactly what happens, but just getting a different take on it all.

Well vampires are kinda supposed to be creepy monsters that don't really care, the one thing that bothers me about Edward ( and I loved the books when I was a teen) is that he's an old dude dating a teenager, also why is he spending immortality in high school? Makes zero sense lol. Just hide in your expensive home, you will be fine.

Could you try Truman Capote's writing routine? According to what I read somewhere, he said that he could only write if he was lying down and wrote for four hours a day.

I agree with the whole 'Edward is 100 yo and doesn't need to be in high school', but also taking in consideration the fact that the character is forever stuck looking like a teen (let's not focus on the visual of the actor RP portraying Edward, but rather on the book description) it's a struggle. Forever in Limbo. Looking too young for a proper job (depending on what kind of job, but it would be unlikely to get employed unless he forged his ID and age), never aging, not having consented age to drink either in the eyes of everyone else he wouldn't be considered a child anymore and yet not an adult either. Instead he's a coming of age grumpy teenager. And yet with the weight of over 100 years residing upon him and his shoulders. Growing tired of seeing the world change around him while he doesn't keep up with those changes other than trying to adapt himself to his surroundings. Where else could he be other than High school? Maybe he could try for every so years here and there to change the perspective and be a teen school drop out and live life on edge. Try to give his adopted parents a few (impossible) wrinkles to whatever trouble he would cause. 🤣 Or maybe he could skip the High School years and get himself into college like a genius with an high level IQ would 😂 instead of repeating the same old boring years. Oh the possibilities would be endless if he wanted to, but sadly neither would change his outer appearance. He then became a student for eternity by default. The worst nightmare when teens, everyone's dream when reminiscing about the golden years. While his knowledge is vast for the century that he has lived as an immortal sparkly being, the fact that he remains immutable is forever his own stigma to carry. No wonder he is sullen all the time huh. Learning History that he has witnessed. Stuck in fractions. And let's not get into chemistry because it's lacking. His behavior is certainly old fashioned in most ways and rather concerning indeed. From possessive, creepy, and awkward. But then again so is Bella. She's far from the normal and plain Jane she claims to be. The typical FL in a teenage romantic novel that claims to be plain, boring and that proceeds to point out most of her defects as if others are perfect when perfection doesn't exist. Besides all of these rather silly things and more into the novels, the one thing I find most hilarious and equally disturbing is to have glittering vampires. Even though, their descriptions were made to sound ever so poetic as the author tried her best to describe their unique beauty to be perfectly carved into shinny stone of Swarovski crystals or something within those lines, all that comes to mind is them shinning like disco balls on a Saturday Night Fever 🤣🤣🤣 We all crave for that break of normalcy in narratives. Something unique, not too cliché. And yet when authors try it out, to step above that bar, we bash or joke about it because we find ourselves used to the old pattern in most themes. Like with vampires, they combust or burn when exposed to the sun, they don't stand there and shine like pretty marbled figurines. So, in a way we refute to accept anything different than what we're used to. It's always interesting how our POV changes within years. What we've read in our teens, sounds so foreign when we pass the line of adulthood. 😌

They were all rich, he wouldn't really need a job, they can just hang out in their mansion or move somewhere else.
@MaikoSeikaRIN

@@kaiju_k5042 Good point there 🤔 He can choose whatever he wants to do, maybe he could have move out before and buy his own mansion and be broody in it if he truly wanted. Within the years, people would probably say it was haunted 🤣again there could be endless possibilities, however within the literary Universe in which Edward was created, he had to be stuck with the cruelest fate of all. Being a student for all eternity muhohoh jk. That was until he met Bella and a pack of frenemies wolves. But yeah I mean if one "lives" to be around for about a century and does not have wealth to his name, being a vampire no less, I would say step into the sun and be done. But in his case he would only sparkle huh 😐😂

oh… the point of looking for alaska is that she’s also the anti manic pixie dream girl, there are many consequences that are permanent and painful to miles’s romanticization of alaska. and a lot of people complained and misunderstood this idea, which is the ENTIRE reason john wrote paper towns afterwards, going deeper into this idea.

I don’t agree with your reading of 500 Days of Summer. Tom may learn a lesson (for me that’s debatable) but, Summer is very much the archetypal manic pixie dream girl. Summer has no personality and is given no interiority. She isn’t even a character, just some collection of traits that the writer thought was attractive.

Love your vlogs and this idea especially, but I have to voice my disappointment at your lack of awareness concerning how truly problematic Twilight was and is. The fact that you would still give it 4 stars boggles my mind. Twilight instills a dangerous idea of what romance and relationships should look like in young girls’ minds and promotes and idealizes emotional abuse in a criminally covert way. As a fully grown adult woman, I had hoped you would point that out and revised your original infatuation with the book.

My thoughts as well. The racist plot of the savage indigenous character and the white refined family. Also that Jacob was like 15? He was a child being overly sexualized the entire series.

Hello! I do acknowledge in the video that Twilight is problematic. I mention that Edward acts like a stalker and that it's inappropriate that he is controlling and aggressive. However, I enjoyed the nostalgia of rereading the book! For lots of teenagers circa 2010, the book was just silly wish fulfilment. This video was supposed to be a bit of fun and nostalgia. If we're getting into the socialising nature of YA romance, that's an extremely complex topic for a different day. And there are A LOT of popular YA romance today that are way worse than Twilight (ACOTAR is in the YA section of my local bookstore, for example). I appreciate your comments and I agree that the book is problematic. Take care 💛
