I can't take credit for this video because it is now public domain. It sure does give a person a good idea of what these birds are good at. It's no wonder they are nik-named Spinners.
Excellent demonstration of the Birmingham's roll that can be bred for traits such as... :1 speed, :2 depth, :3 frequency, :4 kitting to name just a few. Truly amazing birds, as a breeder and flyer of Birmingham rollers I must say these pigeons have given me so much more than I ever expected and continue to amaze me after more than 12 years. To those who are doing the same... All the best in your attempts at the betterment of the beautiful Birmingham roller pigeon. (/("v")\) .JASE.
makes me cry, feel heart broken at times I am unable to fly with them and for the sheer beauty they love flying, spinning & tumbling, I love pigeons so much, I can't wait to wake up to be with my pigeons each day, beautiful gift from God!
AWESOME! we had 15 of these and let them go but 2 came back and are living on our roof now :) the female gives us a show every afternoon :) its awesome
I noticed a mainly white pigeon doing sommersaults in the air near my house recently and thought that no one would believe me so I searched to see if anyone else had seen it. Thats how I ended up here. I had no idea there are a whole bunch of pigeons that do this. How cool. I thought the one thats been hanging around might be unwell or something. Not sure why hes turned up near my house in London. The other pigeons dont do it.
i always thought they did it when they felt threatened by some other bird to escape because while the tumbler, or roller what ever you prefer, is falling the other bird won't be able to keep up.
My wife use to have one named "Griffin" We lived on the 7th floor of an apartment. he had a huge cage there, we would let him out when we where home, and my wife would let him go and fly, and tumble , but when she would ring this little dinner bell, he would come back right away. One day though, a Hawk unfortunately caught him..........:(
ChaChing if your latest comment is in reference to my two pigeons, I assume and hope you are joking. Mine are not for consumption. They are like family to me. :-)
Wow, great action close ups! Reminds me of good ol' days in Dena flyin the kits & doctorin the acrobats the raptors nicked. What Discovery episode this come from? Miss my rollers.
Very interesting, I didn't know this before. But why do they roll? Maybe caused by a good sip of moonshine? Thanks a lot for recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck health and wisdom.
i love these birds, so great. the most logical answer to why they do roll is to evade common predators like hawks or falcons, so they do that so the predator gets confused. now people get the most pure genes of the rollers so they will always roll for there amusement, and now most of them do this.
hi there im struggling to get mine to fly let alone roll there about a year old and at the moment im feeding them half an oz per bird ( wheat / milo) ive tried more food but still wont fly they just come out and perch on the house roof, any suggestions would be helpfull , many thanks

excelentes tomas, se de la dificultad de hacerlas, felicidades
@staggysgasgas try scaring them with a long pole and a bin bag or throwing something at them, it can be a headache i know, if that doesnt work lock them up in tight space and let them out after 2-3 days. If that doesnt work release them from far away and theyll have to fly back.
They move the wings and fold the tail in, in a special way. You can clearly see they do it on purpose. I had a pigeon at home for 5 weeks. He liked to play. When he came out again to his friends, he soon discovered that he had to work so hard to find enough food to not starve so much, so he stopped playing and started being like the other pigeons. Only after eating, they relax a bit, then off again to search the streets for food that don't exist. Just look! They keep picking and there is only sand or nothing at all. They starve and governments and communes don't care about them either. They took away the 30£ a big cemetery staff got for seeds, to save money. Liars.
@curlymike I gotta add, these are the coolest pigeons I've ever seen, not like those dirty crap eating bastards we have around here. The only amusement ours have is to sit on a wire across the road and poop down on people, I'm not joking, they almost got me once!
@TheShaolin99 ive been throwing stones and ive managed to get them to fly for about 10 mins now but very low i put extra wheat in tonights feed so see what happens also i weighed 1 of them tonight and he weighs about 8oz ( thought they be on the podgy side) thanks for the reply
Most fanciers are perfectly aware of PMV-1 and will vaccinate their birds for them. I do. Even though PMV can be passed to pigeons, it isn't passed to us. Vaccinate your birds if you care about them and their immunity will do the rest. I don't think your theory will actually happen :P If lofts had a bad outbreak of PMV, the fanciers would know to separate and do the best to help the sick and protect the healthy. The health department wouldn't go on a pigeon killing rampage.
What rollers do is EXACTLY what wild pigeons perform when under attack by those same falcons: somersault. As for "breeding genetic defects is cruelty" Got a pet dog? If so, it's bred for "defects" breeders found useful or attractive (BTW - "defect" is your term) What defect in one setting can be advantageous in another. That's the idea of selection (natural and manmade). Guess you can't expect a heck of a lot of intelligence from someone who continues his post the way you do.
Good to have you on record mikew165 for admitting to an illegal act. 11 roller pigeons fans throughout the West are facing heavy fines and jail time for admitting to killing various birds of prey in violation of the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. I'm forwarding the information I have already acquired about you to the proper authorities. Cheers! Roller pigeons are incredibly cool, but you can't blame raptors from thinking "Hey, easy meal!"
some rollers rolling in the ground ,really very very strange ,becuese they can die very esay i have ones con't flly becaues ones ther foot up the ground they star rolling
i wanna eat pigeon, we can negotiate a price for ur two pigeons, as long as they dont have diseases and they are fed and maintained, we'll do business ;) what a delicacy
I have to confess that I said to myself WTF!! They are amazing! And, yes, as mentioned, it must be a predator avoidance strategy. Nature is often smarter than we realize.
