In this video I react and TASTE the top 10 wines from Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list of 2023. Surprisingly, just a few hours after the reveal, some of the Top 10 wines were no longer available in wine shops. To my knowledge, no other wine publication has the ability to clear shelves so quickly with their gold and platinum medals. So I was really curious to taste these wines myself.
Some of the WINE ACCESSORIES I use regularly:

Another great presentation! The WineSpectator Top 100 always produces several mysterious and controversial rankings. It is very helpful to have a highly knowledgeable and experienced wine authority such as yourself parse through these choices with critical approach and honest assessment. I for one greatly appreciate the analysis you have provided in this and your previous video - especially with regard to WineSpectator’s more suspect choices. 👍🍷🥂

A thumbs up for opening the Pichon Baron and Lynch Bages. I remember in 2007, out of curiosity, opening a 2000 Lynch Bages. It was like drinking black ink! Currently I have 2015 Lynch Bages and 2018 Pichon Baron cruising in the cellar. Great video.

@@NoSediment You’re making a video which I understand why you’re opening those young wines. I’m still sitting on 2005 Montrose and 2010 Giscours. Last year we opened a 1988 Leoville Las Cases and it was an amazing bottle of juice. But I agree Lynch Bages as a 5th growth is overpriced. I bought Durfort-Vivens a, 2nd growth Margaux and a killer wine, at less than half the price as the Lynch. Thing is very few people know or chase the Durfort-Vivens while Lynch Bages is a darling and the price reflects that. Way back 1996 Lynch Bages was actually my first “expensive” bottle of Bordeaux so I fell for the hype too. We learn as we go.

The Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain cabernet was one of the three bottles that got me interested in wine almost 15 years ago. Was a hard bottle to get a hold of before (even in California), probably going to almost impossible now😢. Their Napa valley release is also good, but just not the same.

I went to a big Bordeaux tasting for the 2020 vintage this year and the Lynch-Bages and Pichon Lalande were the two most memorable for me. The Lynch-Bages was tremendously dense, dark, and rich with a texture that was like cream. The Pichon Lalande was my wine of the night, just incredible and so balanced already in its youth.
@NoSediment
@NoSediment 7 месяцев назад
That is exactly what I remember from my tastings Lynch-Bages being dense and rich, and very full bodied. And for me it lacks some elegance. 😢 my specific 2020 bottle was closed. 😓

I don’t know much about the topic of wine publications, but this year’s top ten makes me feel like some of those wineries sponsored Wine Spectator (especially for the #1 and #9 spots) to get a favorable placement on the top 100. What do you think?
@NoSediment
@NoSediment 7 месяцев назад
I cannot comment about the sponsorship. But not only publications, but also many wine critics want to keep on the good side of many wineries, because they provide accommodations when inviting and sponsoring trips. 🤷‍♀️ but I also don’t think that large companies make worse wines, they are some of the most reliable wines vintage after vintage because they have the recourses! 🤷‍♀️ therefore, it is very hard to comment and and I don’t want to make assumptions. 😅

Love your content. Now consider- a billionaire, megalomaniacal, influential figure from Brazil buys a large winery and wants to prove himself. What better way to pay off an influential wine critic? If you produce 8,000 cases per year, paying a wine critic $10000 for a better score is a HUGELY profitable play.

Marlborough is not a valley. It is a flat plain leading from the ocean to the mountains. There are some valleys as the plain approaches the mountains (or hills really) such as the Awatere Valley. Otherwise Marlborough is as much a valley as the Medoc is. - From a fan of yours from New Zealand.

This WS list is really an absolute joke this year. Just look at the top 3 wines. There are so many better Bordeaux than Lynch Bages (even around the price point of $200). As far as Sonoma Coast Pinots, the Occidental wouldn't even make my top 10. And while I love Brunello and am glad to see representation, the Agiano has never risen to the top of any of the many Brunello tastings in which I've participated. It's a mid-level Brunello. There are so many so much better. WS is doing the consumer a diservice by inflating prices of undeserving wines, and in doing so ultimately hurting these regions by misaligning expectations with experience.

whole concept of this list seems to be, dare I say, little stupid… making list of top wines and considering how available and how cheap they are is redundant. first of all, prices of all these wines will increase because of this list and secondly, idea of any wine list should be discover and experience something new and amazing, not a wine guide for aldi😅
