I just bought Ed Yong’s book based on how much you enjoyed it and because I love his writing on COVID. I’m currently reading Small Town Girl which is about a woman caught up in the UK Spycops scandal. I don’t know if you’ve heard of that. A number of undercover police officers were found to have infiltrated environmental groups, anti-racists groups and started relationships with women, some even had kids with these women. It’s a horrifying but excellent read. I’m a big non-fiction reader, history, biography and disability are the main areas I read.

An Immense World is also shortlisted for the 2023 Royal Society Science Book Prize. That and the Wainwright Prize are my go-to non fiction book prizes.

I am a serious non-fiction nerd so everything that you put out about non fiction I have to hunt down. Thank you for devoting one whole show to just NF !! Maybe we can do more, please ???

I read Immense World twice this year! The praise and accolades are fully deserved. Definitely think you will love Paradise Falls, it is an impeccable example of journalistic nonfiction really.

Oh also, on this topic and I haven't seen you mention it before, I would be curious what you think of the women's prize adding non fiction, and maybe speculation of what you think we could see there.

I love Stephen Moss's writing! It was through his books that I started my journey reading nature writing. He writes for the general public, so everyone can understand the topic, but also, wive the information with humour, anecdotes, commentary and quotes with such a talent that one reaches the end of the book without realising it. So many interesting books in the nominees this year in all the prizes!

I usually follow the Baillie Gifford and the NBA, but I'm intrigued now about some of the others you listed. The Baillie Gifford has a podcast (Read Smart: The Baillie Gifford Prize for Nonfiction) in which they interview the authors of the shortlisted books. Some of the interviews are really compelling and I have since read books I didn't plan to because the interview was so interesting.

You said your most favourite Non fiction genre is Nature. Well, mine is mostly history - but I also love reading memoirs and biographies as well. So I guess I have 2 favourite genre's. Some of these books have been added to my wishlist. Thanks.

I read Red Memory, The Rediscovery of America, and Time to Think for nonfiction November already and I enjoyed all of them. I also found that I had already read many of the books on the Royal Society Trivedi Science Book Prize earlier in the year. I looked at previous years and saw that I had read and enjoyed many of the books over the years as well, so I think it’s a prize I might have to start following.

Oh my goodness yes I couldn’t make it through Vaillant’s speech either 😅 but i’m 25% into Fire Weather right now and he is SUCH an incredible writer! I already know that by the end this book will be a favorite. So incredibly detailed and well written 😍

When he started comparing the work of the judges to apes picking nits, I physically recoiled. 😂 But I'm so happy to hear the book is good! I'm definitely going to try to get to it next year.

Definitely want to read Ed Yong's book An Immense World. Read The Escape Artist is not for the faint hearted about a daring escape from a concentration camp. A non fiction book I just finished is not on these prize lists but was eye opening, frightening in many respects and kept me reading long into the night. The book was The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War by Jeff Sharlet. It gave me a look into American politics especially into those much different than my own.

My favorite of the year so far is The Best Minds: A Story of Friendship, Madness, and the Tragedy of Good Intentions by Jonathan Rosen about the history of mental health treatment and the tragic story of his closest childhood friend, a brilliant schizophrenic whose life took a dark turn. It is on the Washington Post's list of top 50 nonfiction reads of the year. That list and the comparable New York Times list are my go-to sources for nonfiction (I've read five on the Post's list this year; the NYT's list isn't out yet.) That said, I've got to start following the Wainwright Prize! Overreach and Batteries also look interesting.

Muppets in Moscow sounds perfect for me. I have a friend whose father is dying and he asked me to bring good stories when we go out to lunch after Thanksgiving. I think he'd like to hear about when Sesame Street visited the former Soviet Union. When Books Went to War by Molly Guptill Manning also sounds good.
