I rarely use smears unless i make huge motions (then again all i do is headbop looping animations) but my god i remeber making one for the first time and spent all day laughing and not able to work at all lol
@@ayeeperccofficial I'm actually both! I have a degree in Illustration and Animation and I'm currently half way through my masters. I am focusing on Animation for it and haven't done any illustration work for it. My RU-vid probably shows more illustration work that I do in my own time, though I do show my animation process in my studio vlogs.
And unfortunately anime is a victim of these channels. Oh how We wish those shits were more informed. (Though you have to admit the smears are actually funny)

The modern day animation is more like a flash type animation just objects moving around not actual individual frames being painted. Also 3D, I almost forgot about that. There was a period when almost everything moved to 3D and the worst kind, the robotic animated characters etc it was so awful to watch. From Disney to everyone else all used it and it was a pain. It was cheap to produce so they just pumped them out like crazy. Well not much had changed today. Less investment and more milking the product. People got tired of it really. That is why I moved mainly to older things and mainly anime. Something like Akira have every frame wallpaper worthy shots and everything moves.
Smears are less common nowadays because they are no longer a necessity. In the old days you had to draw each frame by hand. Because of that the framerate was much lower and fast motions would have looked really bad without the motion blur techniques. Today you can draw just one frame, copy and morph it as much as you want. That means you can produce much more frames in a shorter amount of time, leading to much higher frame rates. That's why the smear became an artistic effect that is actually quite hard to spot if you are just watching casually.
Cartoons are typically 24 frames a second, that's always been the stardard. High framerates typically look weird on cartoons, ESPECIALLY without smears.
Animation smears are easiest to find in anime and they are always hilarious. If you ever get a Crunchyroll sponsorship I think that would be a good idea for a video!
Okay so literally I went over to the original ducktale theme song and OMG SO MANY SMEARS!!! It's soo cool to see how much they used in animation! I changed the playback speed to 0.25 and, yes, it was kinda demonic.... buuut... the amount of smears in just like... the helicopter scene part is so awesome! Why don't we use smears as much anymore?? Modern day animating plus smears would make it so much better! Thanks Jazza for helping me actually realise the thought that people used to put in animation!!
Also Little Witch Academia, One Punch Man and Voltron Legendary Defenders. Little Witch Academia is a gold mine of smears, rather like Mob Psycho 100. Google it, and you won't be disappointed.
I know this is an older video, but when Ducktales (2017) first started animation smears weren't used as much in some places. If you look a little closer at certain parts though I guarentee you'll get some really good animation smears.
When I was younger I used to watch spongebob a lot and I’d just look at all the blurred characters as the moved suddenly and all the multiple eyes between frames. Oh the nostalgia.
I want to say that I like your shirt, the "Juicy" part is beautiful and the colors fit well together. I'd be cool to have merch with actual art instead of catchphrases.
I personally really like the animation of the new ducktales. I think not smearing is a stylistic choice, its just what they wanted to do. And the animation looks good.
I myself like the story of the new ducktales but the animation is weirdly enough too clean for my liking because then it will just look too much like tweening and less frame work but I still get why people like it

Omg I remember two years ago me and my friend just had a session where we’d pause at the intro and just laugh at all the frames where he looked drunk or had insane proportions. Ahhh that was fun 😄
