At times difficult to register that Blackadder's boss (and Bertie Wooster) went on to play Dr House.

Gay has much like most words over the years has changed in terms of its meaning such as someone who’s joyful and happy and not to homosexuality, however the word gay got mixed in with sailors who tended to lean a certain way more so than most people, being seen around mostly men whilst being very happy, until later on it became more and more associated with the more feminine side of things where gay was later derived more of an insult rather than describing one’s sexuality or mood until it started becoming more and more associated with the rise and awareness of homosexuality as well as acceptance, most gay men would either hide their gayness or either join the navy as a way of hiding their sexuality out at see surrounded by nothing more that the ocean and sweating men, or more often than not they’d join a pirate crew since pirates did and were the first to openly support gay rights since everyone mostly were stuck close together and the occasional spark and romance was bound to break out, that being said, their relationship was more on the male/male casual side of things and not the more over feminized or confused monstrosity that has plagued the recent LGBTQ community where their gayness is portrayed as over the top sort of way but the more classical sort of gay where it was just two men who were interested in each other but were and still acted and behaved like men, rather than the more modern sort of necktie, feminine kinda gay if you catch my point.

If you live in London there's a pub called The Spaniards near Highgate that Dick Turpin used to drink in!

Such word-rich, clever scripts. You can imagine the actors just champing at the bit to deliver their lines, and such actors! I had written off Blackadder after the first mediocre series and it took me a few years to realise my premature misjudgment. Your comment about the modern meaning of 'gay' reminded me of a game we used to play reclaiming the word for heteros by making the modern meaning apply in all cases. Examples: West Side Story: I feel pretty, oh so pretty. I feel pretty and witty and homosexual'. Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers (Why do fools fall in love): 'Why do birds sing so homosexually ...' 'Flintstones, meet the Flintstones, we'll have a homosexual old-time' Do you know the classic Fred Astaire movie 'The Homosexual Divorcee' ? And so on. Perhaps you can think of some of your own. Cheers.

The highwayman was told as a romantic tale years after the event. Robin Hood, Dick Turpin were the two most famous and any more realistic descriptions were far less flattering. As time went on they acquired a legend status of the good guy fighting against the rich/system. Adam Ant ( 80's musician ) did a song called stand and deliver where he was the dandy highwayman so dashing and handsome. I think you would enjoy the song 4 mins long. When I was at school all the boys wanted too be a highwayman and all the girls wanted to kiss the highwayman. Strange how stories get distorted over time.

I've always thought that the tray falling and rising bit was really out of place in the Blackadder universe.

"What if you took his mask off and you thought he was ugly?" Obviously, the attractiveness of a masked person has no relation to physical appearance. If finding him ugly would be a bar to you then perhaps you should go looking for your romantic partners at the shallower end of the pool. Leave all those yummy highwaymen to those of us who can see beyond the masks without the need to remove them 😜

Brilliant series, and maybe my favourite episode (Macbeth another). With your name I wondered if you're part Welsh. Ardderchog! As for the family name there's a Welsh harpist called Georgia Ruth. Here's how to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

Just a quick note: if you're using phlegm when trying to pronounce Welsh place names, you're pronouncing them incorrectly. 😉
