Whats refreshing about you Bob is you admit being a snob in the past and seeing you enjoy rap and hip-hop is incredible. Many metalheads will never get past that in their life to see a whole different progression of tunes.
@@coleintheville117 True, I used to be a rap snob and ignore anything that wasn't Rap or R&B. After hearing Tame Impala, Black Sabbath, and Dance Gavin Dance, at 30, it made me realize that if you love music, you're missing out if you don't listen to more than what you're used to

@@saintfrancis9619its definitely not. Its impossible to top Gasoline, Sacrifce, Dont break my heart, less than zero, take my breath, out of time bro just read the whole tracklist, its ridiculous. The last 3 songs on after hours are the best on the album but the rest kinda lacks and doesn’t age as well imo and doesn’t touch Dawn fm’s whole production, sound and style. The Mj dance influence, the 80s but also futuristic theme
@@LeMn680 that’s a pretty off take. the fact that the songs are about women doesn’t negate the quality of the album. Many perfect or almost perfect albums are filled entirely with songs of love
I genuinely after watching your videos for 3 years now, have not seen one person on this planet that is better at pausing at the worst time then you bob😂
Remember when this came out and I was loving every single song lol. Despite my friends saying other wise I thought the album was incredible and forgot how many bangers are actually in it. The Weeknd is so good
This album came out a day or two after my grandpa passed away. I took a few days off from work to grieve. When I went back to work (as a sales rep) the first person I helped out was wearing a shirt that said "Grandpas rock!"
I've seen a lot of people say dawn FM's better than After hours and I kind of agree to some extent but After hours got me through some tough times, Abel is so vulnerable in that album that it just hits harder for me personally.
Nah the stretch of snowchild, escape from la, heartless, faith, blinding lights, is toooo legendary. I’ve been a dawn fm defender tho I love the sounds
It would be absolutely crazy if he did Purple Rain next week around its 40th anniversary. It is such a masterfully crafted piece that is beloved by so many artists from rock and jazz, all the way to hip hop, and Dawn FM is a great example of how the themes of Purple Rain continue to be referenced in music today
What translate so well is the combination of 80's mixed with modern music making (2022), Abels amazing voice, all the rich details, the story told through the album and with the previous in mind and a much more pronounced bass compared to 80's music. And to think this didn't get even one grammy nomination is an universal crime.
hi bob! i highly recommend oneohtrix point never's album "replica" since he produced most of dawn FM and since you love ambient music, i think you'll love this
Bob! Listen to this comment! You even said Oneohtrix's name correctly! You won't regret it! *personally I would rather him start with Garden of Delete, since he's said before that super repetitive loops tend to turn him off and Replica is literally just that at its core (incredible as it is) and because the heavy grungier sounds of GoD might be more immediately accessible to Bob. But I agree that if he loves all the little production touches on Dawn FM he should definitely dive in to 0PN's work, cuz Rifts, Replica, R+7, and Garden of Delete are all peak albums from this century. God tier production through and through!
One of the most engulfing reviews out there. This reaction was a great journey full of emotions and reminded me of why I listen to this artist. Thank you, I hope you enjoy the final chapter!
My interpretation of the album with the knowledge of him being in purgatory meaning he has died, is that this whole album is his journey through purgatory looking back at his life. It starts off with dawn fm and him realizing he died, assuming from OD and waking up in purgatory and realizing he needs to take this journey through the dark to reach the light that he desperately wants. Then we get gasoline, sacrifice, take my breath. To me, this all is him looking back at his drug addiction, partying and not taking much care into his life or the people around him. Sacrifice made that clear when he says “I don’t wanna sacrifice for you love” meaning he wasn’t ready to give up his temporary fun for love. Then we get Quincy jones, out of time. That’s when he kind of matured a bit in his life and realized everything he was doing but also realizing it’s too late and also starting to feel some regret. Here we go again. I guess he finds a girl he likes. Then best friends maybe he’s going back to his old ways. Met the girl he refers to in here we go again but she catches feelings this scares him so he’s doing what he always does and pushes her away and just wants to stay friends he says it’s to protect her because he knows he will ruin it. Deep down he hasn’t changed. Also a call back to the Quincy jones spoken word when he says when someone got to close he’s cut them off. The Weeknd does the same. Now with is there someone else, i kind of get lost because it sounds like he actually wants the girl from best friends but she’s moved on? Starry eyes sounds to me like he’s pretty much begging her to come back and she can treat him like trash as long as she stays? Every angel is terrifying to me is just like an ad to the after life. Like he’s trying to entice The Weeknd to cross over to after life? But right now he’s too busy looking back at his life and still regretting. The next two songs don’t break my heart and I heard you’re married. I think the woman has moved on but still keeps him on the side and if you pay attention to his old music, he was always ok with being a side piece but not anymore. Like he took pride in it and taking women from their men temporarily while he was in town for shows. Then less than zero, I think at this point he feels like he will never change and he will just continue to be his toxic self and it will always be a continuous cycle. He’s still regretting even after all that. Throughout the album he is just showing regret to his past. He may have realized from mistakes but still repeating them? Then the phantom regret by Jim Carey pretty much is telling The Weeknd you been in purgatory this whole time and still have not let go of the regret, you still feel the same and you aren’t changing. So he must stay in purgatory until he lets go of the regret of his past decisions. He has not found peace within himself. I feel like that’s why he looks so old. He’s been in purgatory that long and trying to deal with his past. If you notice the album is on a continuous loop. I think end of phantom regret transitions right back into dawn fm. So that solidifies that he stuck in purgatory until he can let go of all his past and move forward. Honestly, when you watch the music videos in order, it kind of makes more sense. Take my breath is the first video and he’s at a party where everyone is inhaling something from an oxygen tank but clearly it symbolizes drugs. And the woman he meets has a kink of being choked or choking or whatever. He dies in the video from his lifestyle. But I think he ODs . Which it then transitions straight in to the sacrifice video where he wakes up at the same party and then floats toward a light hearing the spoken word from dawn fm . almost like Jim Carey plays the role of god. Letting him know he just died. Then sacrifice plays and he’s getting dragged to what I think is the start of purgatory and demons suck out his soul at the end of the video. The gasoline video is next but I still haven’t figured that one out yet. He’s old at this point and I think he’s watching his past self at a party doing things he used to do but surrounded by demons? Idk as far as the music videos go and visual story, that’s where I get lost 😂
I love watching bob because for most of my life I was like a club banger, pure rap and lyrics type of guy, hated pop. And then The Weeknd came, and introduced me to the entire pop world
New sub.. watched yr after hours reaction and enjoyed it.. thank you for reacting the weeknd.. first time I became a fan was from stayboy album.. when I heard “I feel it coming” and been listening to the weeknd ever since.. again thank you 😊 🙏
the phantom of the opera feeling you felt is actually so fitting. the music video for this has like a “phantom” version of him wearing a mask, and watching over the love interest from afar. always love your reactions poppop 🫡
I’ve been obsessed with this album for that past month or so, but it’s amazing that you piece together things in your first listen that I didn’t even consider. Glad you enjoyed this one, I love it more than after hours by just a bit.
Yay! You're one of my favorite reactors, and this is not only my favorite Weeknd project but in my Top 5 favorite albums of all time. The way the entire album flows, the transitions, the production, his vocal performances, etc. is nothing short of incredible. Very reminiscent of "Lovesexy" by Prince, which is my favorite album of all time :) Has to be enjoyed as an entire experience, and only listening to the singles would do it a disservice.
I love watching you react to albums that I love, and im specially enjoying this one cause thats exactly what I feel EVERYTIME I listen to this masterpiece. ITS SO GOOD! I also agree that this album is better than after hours...
Best Friends aged like wine. Bro was way ahead of the curve in mixing 00s style R&B and 80s style pop. Everyone's doing it now, but Abel did it first! You need to listen to the remix w/ Summer Walker.
The first time I ever heard The Weeknd was actually on a local Radio station in Chicagoland called 103.5 Kiss FM when I was in the 7th grade, so it was insanely trippy when I first listened to this album and the fictional radio station was ALSO 103.5 Great reaction as always, and i cant wait to listen to the new album with you (Btw if you take requests, 4eva is a Mighty Long Time by BIG K.R.I.T is a really underrated southern rap album that not many people have reacted to)
90% of the fans are 7-8 year old kids who listen to cartis screaming and drake and kendrick diss. Listen to what you want and explore different genres. Dont feel pressured by the haters to listen to rap and hip-hop all the time. The Weeknd is amazing and there's many songs of his you should listen to
Originally, he was branching out WITH hip-hop. Now it’s pretty much all he does. People love rap, it’s the most listened to genre in the world right now. It’s good for the algorithm
After hours is far more accessible to radio play. Much more trap, contemporary influence spearheaded by some of the most catchy and pop friendly songs of the last 10 years. Dawn fm is much more artsy, layered with a long drawn out concept. I honestly think in truth that’s why it wasn’t received aswell but I think it’s a better project
Abel is amazing because he’s a mainstream star for specific and popular songs, but somehow all of his others works remain niche. He’s achieved worldwide recognition, yet the majority of people can’t name any others tracks besides Die For You or Blinding Lights. We love you Abel. XO🫶
I think everyone was really hyped for what would happen in every angel is terrifying with that beat, and though fun, a little dissapointed that they didn't make full use of what the could have been
the story hes telling abt his character dying in after hours, and him being in this purgatory state in Dawn FM is so damn creative. i cant wait to see where the story goes for the final album of the trilogy
For Every angel is terrifying, keep in mind the theme of purgatory. The listener is listening to a radio station in purgatory on the way to the after life. The second part of the song is an ad for the after life, just like there are ads on a radio station. Same thing with Tlae by Quincy. In purgatory, on your way to the afterlife, naturally you would reflect on your life, your mistakes, how things couldve been different and so on, which is exactly what this song/interlude is about: "Looking back is a bitch isnt it".
a tale by quincy means the effects life has on us subconsiuously witch leads to difficulties progressing to be who we truly are & our relationships with others :) the weeknd abel surely can relate :)
Bob you got to review the Live at Sofi Stadium After movie by the Weeknd!!!! Most of his hit songs were performed with a different but epic flavour of their originals and trust me you are gonna love it!
