Kyo is one of my favorite vocalists precisely for the fact that he is much more about getting the feeling and emotion across in his performance than he is about being perfect and hitting every note perfectly. It's not something that's going to be for everyone and I can completely understand the style can turn people off, but I personally love it.

i just wanted to come in here years later to say this is the best reaction i've found to this song. a lot of people are very over the top with their surprise to this but you're actually analyzing the song and it's so nice to get a real musical perspective to it. there's so much work from the band that is really cool and you've really helped me hear it better. just, thanks for a great video♥

Their main concept is "pain". A very deep type of emotional pain. So deep that only minority can understand them. And each song expresses different types of "pain". The lead singer will always become the main character within the lyrics. The band will create the atmosphere and the "world" within that lyric. So if you can understand the lyric by heart, you're someone that is familiar with that certain type of "pain" in at least one of their song. Then you'll see that this band is actually expressing your pain you once felt. And you can almost feel that this band is saying "you're not alone" in the best way possible. With the lead vocal screaming out the pain for you. That's why some people deeply loves this band. Besides that, they're lyrical genius who are very technical when it comes to expressing their world.

“Making uncomfortable atmosphere” is one of their best ability and that why I fall in love with them again and again. You know, when I went to their lives, my heart beat really fast then slow down then fast. It’s terrifying, intriguing, uncomfortable, but joyful. I will never forget those moments till I die. Sound silly but true.

Kyo's vocals are the perfect example of "you need to know the rules in order to break them".

20:50 that's the sound of your stomach when you haven't eaten all day. Bro, his whistle fry is insane, literally whistling between his vocal folds during fry screaming. It's also amazing how many things he could do with his voice in one song. The undulation or out of tune thingy can be off putting at times, but I guess that's what makes Kyo unique.

To be pretty honest I think Vinushka is the song that describes Dir en Grey in lots of ways... this band is so hard to understand and get attached, but when you get in, you can't leave because they basically express much of our feelings and even if you don't like their songs you will never stop thinking about what you saw. For me this song and DeG is like an angst concept, when you are in pain and can't let it out because you don't know if it will hurt you even more, so you keep holding it inside until you explode. Maybe is why they cause this anxiety feeling and I honestly love it

Still hoping you'll react to their 2013 live performance of Macabre. That is probably their most artistic song to date

22:48 Yes yes yes! You are exactly on the nose. This song comes from the album "Ouroboros", which is a symbol of a dragon/snake eating it's own tail; a symbol of rebirth and renewal.. To even further emphasize this, they did a tour where Vinushka was the first song of every show, except the last show of the tour, where it was the last.

I don't know what it is about his singing or the music, but it gives me constant goosebumps, much more than the recorded songs

I've always known that these guys were wildly talented, but I've been waiting ten years for someone who could break down the "why" as well as you have. I really hope you do choose to keep reviewing them. I'll be keeping an eye out! One of the best things about this band is that they keep challenging themselves, which in turn challenges us. Their new albums are often so overwhelmingly strange on the first listen that I've learned to stop expecting to appreciate it during the initial experience. Now, I trust that each subsequent listen will reveal more detail. I have albums from years ago that I'm still discovering new things to appreciate.

I kind of fell down the rabbit hole of watching various RU-vidrs reacting to DIR EN GREY but when I came across this video, boy was I surprised! I Instantly recognised your accent as being South African! As a long time fan of DIR EN GREY from South Africa, it was trip to find this! I think of all the reaction videos I've watched, this one was the most technical and detailed. It's been interesting hearing about different aspects of the instrumentals (other RU-vidrs don't really mention them). On DIR EN GREY, they have a large catalogue of music and their style has changed quite a bit over the years but Vinushka is one of their defining songs. It's 9 minutes of ebb and flow where you are waiting for the wave to break onto the shore and when it does, wow, does it overwhelm you. (As a viewer who knows the twists and turns of the song, it is fun to watch people's first time reactions to it's unconventional structure.) Kyo (V) has an amazing vocal range so people often focus in on him but the other members of the band, Toshiya (B), Kaoru (Gt), Die (Gt) and Shinya (Dr) are also all immensely talented. They've been going for over 20 years and still making music but I love how one never knows what to expect from them next. Still on my bucket list to see them perform live one day!

There's a whole storyline with the bombs, how they were dropped one after the other with some time in between. It goes through the period before, between and after the second one. That's why the beginning builds so much tension, there's an angry chaotic break, then shock and some budding of hope that it's over, but then it happens again and so the end is complete destruction and chaos.

Well, you see, the band uses Kyo voice as a instrument for the music, in Dir En Grey his voice is much more about emotions being conveyed. In his side project (Sukekiyo) the vocals are more clear. Dir En Grey is a Extreme Metal band so you will see ballads, prog like this, "punk rock", Death metal etc... They really are not for everyone, but damn they are good, the live performances is superb. A band created in 1997 and had the same line-up till now and with 10 studio albuns. The lyrics in Dir En Grey are a bunch of metaphors, Kyo is a Poet (seriously... he really is).

OMG, his vocals.... insanely gooood.

If you enjoyed this, you should give DIABOLOS by them a shot. Live, of course. Also Elizabeth Addict by Sukekiyo, which is the vocalist's side project. Just as artsy but a very different vibe. Cheers!

The number one thing for understand Dir en grey, it's to understand the emotional part of Kyo's perfomance, he is not about perfect notes and be in tune all the time. He interpretates he's lyrics, feeling it. That song and performance is just a masterpiece. I connected so much with the emotions put forth in this song that I cried while watching a reaction of you watching them. You can also see people crying in the audience. That's as powerful as it gets.

Finally! That just made me the happiest person in the whole world! I've been waiting for that and hoping that you'll give them another chance, they truly deserve it. Just loved seeing how you fall for them more and more 😂 I totally understand when you talk about feeling uncomfortable. It took me several months to at least start to understand what they are doing. It's so outside of the box that at first you just don't get it. And Obscure for sure wasn't the best song to start with. However, I'm so glad that you liked Vinushka. The structure is very complicated and that's one of the distinctive features of their music. They are not easy and clear. And in my head, it totally makes sense because in their work they talk about pain, suffering, grief, sorrow and all other sorts of dark and unpleasant emotions that this chaotic but structured at the same time music and all the vocal techniques that Kyo uses (and he is really clever and picky with how he delivers the meaning and the context) actually portrays. That's the nature of human beings. We don't live in perfect order and we don't have it inside us either. And the same is about the vocals. They are not perfectly clean and that's for sure done on purpose. I really liked the comment that I once saw about Kyo and his "imperfections". When you cry or scream it doesn't sound pleasant so why should it be like that when he is talking about these things on stage? And performance is a huge part of their art so thank you for choosing a live version! Kyo for sure is the center of attention and the master. And all other musicians are such professionals. They exactly know they are doing. And let's not forget about the poetry and deep story of each song. All together it creates a real art. I wasn't understanding this at all, until I saw the video wall. Very powerful

"Accidently" saw them when The Human Abstract was opening for them years ago and had never heard them before and still struggle to this day to listen to them because that live performance was Earth shattering.

Kyo (the singer) isn't my favourite nor the most technical, but he is definitely the most intense. He is living and feeling his words like no other. The best example is the live version of Zakuro (Blitz 5 days show). They were less heavy, but this song is an emotional journey, which breaks in a different way. They don't play it often because it takes an obvious toll on them. You can still find a video on RU-vid (from about 10 years ago) and I hope it never disappears

Your initial reaction and your second assessment of Kyo's vocal approach is pretty spot on. Not sure if this is a staple in their current shows but for a very long time the band had these "Inward Screams" sections in between songs where Kyo just screamed, murmured, cried, laughed, and wretched in some weird, twisted, theater performance. Kyo goes way over the top and delivers some of the most unsettling moments I've watched from live convert videos and while it doesn't really entertain me the same way the songs do it does have it's intended effect of just spooking the hell out of you and creating an incredibly unique atmosphere you could only get from a Dir en grey show. The man is something else.

I'm so late to this video because I just found your channel, but Kyo is an extremely emotional singer and definitely artsy. There's a lot of play and experimentation but I've been to shows where he's broken down mid song and the whole crowd just silences and cries with him. It's wild. If you want some more avant-garde what-the-hell-is-happening metal, check out his other band Sukikiyo. They're a supergroup and fantastic. Heavily suggest the song 12時20分金輪際.

I came to these thanks to your newer reaction to them and I'm sure plenty of people have explained tons and you might done your own exploring too but I'll say it anyway. The genre they started in is called Visual-Kei which as the name already indicates has the visuals as it's one major points. Fun thing about Dir en Grey is that you get a studio release and then you never hear that song performed the same again. It's not that they can't they just make all lives a new experience for everyone. Kyo, the singer, is very emotion based singer and he goes fully by his on whims and moods. Some live videos are actually fun to watch because the band are doing their own thing seemingly fully ignoring all the chaos Kyo is practicing on the stage. I love the artistry so much with this band specifically. There is also some points that you pointed out that are actually very typical in Japanese music in general which I tend to call the J-sound.

If you ever wanna do another Dir En Grey reaction, then "Dir En Grey - The World Of Mercy TOUR20 This Way to Self Destruction" is probably one of their most interesting performances out there. It's possibly their most artistic performance.

Aaaah, the reaction I've been waiting months for lol. You're deeply awesome at breaking things apart really wonderfully and in a really understandable way for people who only listen with an emotional-reaction sort of ear. It's interesting to see how much you're reacting to the vocals as "theatrical " because I've never heard them that way, and I've been listening to these weirdos for right around 20 years. I'm thinking it's a little bit of that magic music has, because theatrical to you is emotional to me, though I can see it as theatrical now that you say so. It's just fun to see the differences! I'm a little sad you felt the need to avoid reacting to the words/message, as that's such a big part of this song and most of their songs in general, but that's a personal choice I can definitely respect. This is fantastic and I hope you do more in the future!

You need to check out "itoshisa ha fuhai nitsuki". One of my favorites.... they are all amazing, but for someone just getting into them try something from "withering to death", "the marrow of a bone", or "Uroboros". Those 3 CD's are what I use to introduce my friends to Dir en Grey.... they get hooked on those and are more willing to try their other stuff.

I love watching reaction videos for Dir en grey and yours is easily one of the best I've watched. I loved how you have a good ear to listen and understand what the music is doing and I loved how open you were about how it was making you feel, especially the fact that it made you uncomfortable. Dir en grey has been my favorite band for 15 years now and I'm still uncomfortable with every new piece they put out. When they released Arche I completely wrote them off after my first listen through of the album. I thought they had lost it. A month later I realized it was the best album they had ever made. It takes a lot of getting used to but it is so worth it. Great video, I'll be looking for more on your channel. If you're interested I suggest 2013 Tabula Rasa tour's Macabre as probably their best live performance ever. Also a big fan of Midwife live and so many other recordings of theirs. I cant possibly name them all.

You can't "get" DIR EN GREY, you have to live it :D no just kidding...those guys, you can't put them into a box, they do literally what they want. Am a fan since 2005, I had days in my life, when I only could fall asleep while listening to them, because their "strangeness" gave me comfort. And you're right with the headphones - I exand this by saying, you should listen to all DIR EN GREY songs with headphones, because guitars are not always the same. They're probably my favorite band and I'm still not entirely comfortable with them lol thats the point. They do have some feel good songs tho, mainly in their older albums.

Here 3 months later to say the same as a lot of others, though possibly in a more lengthy form than some others. This is probaby my favourite reaction to Dir En Grey I've seen, definitely up there. Others have liked them more, but you tried to understand them. A futile task I must say, I've been listening to them since 2003 or so and I still barely do. They really don't let you. To get anywhere close you'd have to listen to a song from every every album at least to understand the range of genres they cover. Vinushka is commonly reccomended early on because it showcases a lot of Kyo's skill as a vocalist, and using his voice as an instrument more than a method of portraying the lyrics among a smattering of genres they do cover. That said though, outside of being "J-Rock" and "Visual Kei" they have escaped a genre because it can be anything from nearly acoustic rock (rare, things ike Glass Skin) to real hardcore stuff and everything in between under the rock/metal banner. Though generally leaning towards the heavier end I'll admit. They are my favourite artists, and the fact it's been the same crowd since 1997, with all bar one of them coming from a previous band since 1995 is just ludicrous to me. Hopefully you continue your journey through their catalog

When it comes to dir en grey, the thing that actually matters is the emotion and the sound is only a bonus. Dir en grey are my favorite japanese band but as a fan of them, i'm completely aware that they are meant for a very specific type of music listener

You should give macabre a listen. The performance and theatrics are off the charts. Writing this comment gives me chills thinking about the visuals and the sound.

About Kyo is very commanding front man, I especially think its because the audiences. Their Japan audiences are really nice audiences, and this song especially has a tragedic memories for them. They're definitely a band that takes getting used to for most people, but I think you're hitting on a lot of the things that attract people to them in your analysis. There's also a huge range of styles that they go through, and they really don't care about what people think or expect. Making people feel uncomfortable or unsettled is definitely a big part of it, but they also do pieces were he sings cleanly and more 'normally'.

First, thanks for the breakdown, and giving a chance to something so beautiful but particular. I still wonder if there's a way to listen to this song and not burst in tears at its horrible beauty, especially considering the subject matter. Second, when you mention 'off' notes, from my (limited) knowledge, traditional Japanese music splits tones differently, they'd be in 8th and not quarter tones, giving those seemingly 'off' notes which are very particular, but can also be found all the way to the Middle East and in between. There are also some strong No theatre elements in this, the lyricity, the vocal acting following the more ethereal motions. All in all, from my understanding of Dir en Grey, and Japanese culture, this here is a blend of traditions, telling a modern drama, informed by No tradition (maybe some Kabuki elements as well always present in Visual Kei and its offspring) but using the full range of musicality it can incorporate. I like that you are starting to get into them! I've started listening to them in high-school and really could not get behind them until I went to university. They resonated with me on an emotional level that I could not put into words. Musically speaking, they hit their stride with Uroboros (the album vinushka is on) and the two albums after that. Absolute favourites of mine are Lotus and Rinkaku, which are a bit more subtle, but there is ton s of other great stuff as well. The last released album ist a bit more simple and I don't quite like it like the rest, but they wanted some songs that are easier to play life. Great job on the reaction hope to see more of that!

If you want to really appreciate Kyo's vocals and range I would really reccomend songs like Ain't Afraid to Die, Jealous - Reverse, Concieved Sorrow, or Vanitas. Fantastic jam! It's crazy because this song and frankly this album were ones that I ignored for a while because it had to marinate with me. I've been on a journey with them since I discovered them in highschool back in 07 🧐🤔 but I absolutely love what they have done with the idea of what it means to make music. I think you should check out more of the album tracks work then the "go to" ones because it reveals so much of their identity which can only be described as "Dir En Grey" I have been obsessing with the jams behind a vacant image and Tousei and while they are slower I love the musicianship between what the guitars and bass and drums do with each other. Yeah they are known for Kyo and his ability to do inhuman ish with his vocals but the whole band comes into synch beautifully. the top 3 albums in my opinion are Arche, vulgar and Withering to Death

I'm so glad you are giving them some more chanses, they can be a band which take some time to get used to, but is worth the struggle. I really like the way you break down the song, it gives me some new insight. It would be fun to see some very different songs, like Marmelade Chainsaw or Kukoku no kyouon

Guitar sound has a late 60's sound to the beginning. Perhaps even a little Velvet Underground. Great voice!

Awesome video. Just stumbled onto this because I'm a huge Dir en grey fan (saw them only once though, in 2007 in Paris for the European leg of their tour in support of The Marrow Of a Bone album) and it's an awesome video. Since you seem (seemed, the video is 2 years old) to not have listened a lot of their music, there are LOADS of stuff for you in many styles (from their start in Visuel Kei to their more recent and hardest work). I discovered them in 2005 when their song The Final was on the sampler CD of a french rock and metal magazine and fell into the rabbit hole that is their music. Probably my favorite band (or one of my favorites). Anyways, cheers.
