Cs and programming will change with ai but not be completly replaced. Ai help with the bouler plate code and answering questions quicker. Being a coder will take more soft skills and creativity beyond just writing code. If you code for a profession, a small part of your day is actually coding.

@Codologic Logically, your statement doesn't make sense, as the threshold of GPT-4's abilities would never have enough data to reach the skill level of the "best in the world." The data would average out and be subpar in comparison to an exceptionally skilled software engineer. Continuing with this logic, since you've made a statement that isn't grounded in reason based on the technology, I would argue that even with GPT-4, you might have a difficult time boiling down requirements and describing use cases and constraints in a way that would enable GPT to produce high-quality code.
@@Codologic I don't think you understand where I'm coming from. I've been working for 2 weeks and haven't written a line of code because I'm writing out design specs for integrated systems. GPT-4 excels when it has clear requirements, but that's rarely the case unless you're building something on a simple Vercel-hosted Next.js 12 app. If you're developing systems that rely on cron jobs, self-hosted ECS tasks, ETL pipelines, and strict in-house design systems, you'll notice that LLMs often fail in basic common-sense reasoning, which can be quite laughable. However, when an average software engineer breaks down the work, plans things thoughtfully, and handles the edge cases with well-structured plans and solid error handling, GPT-4 performs admirably. The most challenging aspect is accurately describing the problems that need to be solved. If you describe the problem incorrectly, you're essentially proposing an incorrect solution that will be generated by the LLM without critical thinking. Having coding skills is valuable (as a foundation) because it teaches you how to think logically through problems. If you merely dump problems into GPT-4, you'll never reach a level where you can solve high-paying challenges. Furthermore, as you wait for GPT-4 to carry you through life, you'll realize that those who were already exceptional without GPT-4 are the ones replacing individuals who are merely decent and know how to harness AI.

Coding will be replaced by AI soon. And the professor will give you reasons why. The Professor knows what he is talking about. Best advice is to stay away from Tech jobs.
This talk irks me because he seems to think that computation is all about programming. I don't agree with his initial statement about CS being all about ideas and problem solving. Isn't that actually what programming/developing/software eng. are all about? He keeps using "programming" and "computer science" interchangeably. Maybe it's just nuance but I do think computer science itself is really about us humans understanding the nature of computation. Then, translating that understanding to solve problems is what programming is. So I guess the real question is, can computer science still exist without us knowing the underlying programming languages? Maybe if we no longer HAVE to write code, then CS majors will shift from an applied science to a focus on research and understanding? Maybe AI will force us to think better about computation which in turn will help us solve real world problems? Also let's not forget about hardware. As AI is deployed to physical objects we'll probably see new jobs emerge where programming won't be the focus but we'll still need to know how to control what the computer is doing.
AI will take over to a certain extent but will always be flawed. It will coexist to expedite the process of making software. It's just like with the car assembly line, when they were manually assembled by hand. Now, there are a bunch of robots that expedite and handle a lot of the assembly but still need humans to supervise and guide the process. Sure, it eliminated a lot of the assembly jobs but you still need humans to ensure the operations are running correctly.
