Epica is an amazing band with dozens of amazing songs, heavier and more complex than Nightwish. However, I wonder why you chose this song to react to. It’s one of their weaker so I even wouldn’t put it in Epica’s top 50 list. Try Chasing the Dragon, Tides of Time, Storm the Sorrow, Unchain Utopia, Unleashed, Cry for the Moon... great songs that are relatively easier for Epica beginners.
More of The Warning! They just signed with Lava/Republic Records for a 5-album deal! This @ is what they did last week at the (DE)Tour online concert with such stars as Ringo, Slash, and many others.
I've seen Epica three times in concert...and there are really only two songs that I've ever been able to get into...and this wasn't one of them. For the record, the two songs that I was able to get into were "Edge of the Blade" and "Beyond the Matrix"...both of which are on the The Holographic Principle album.
This was the bands second album, so still finding their sound, in my opinion it’s still too After Forever (founder of Epica is the founding member of After Forever). And to compare Epica to Nightwish is a hard one: NW is symphonic female Metal with a hard touch, and Epica is Black Metal with a female symphonic touch. But that’s my view on it #hatersgonnahate
Here are some Live versions of this album (mostly from the Retrospect show): Chasing The Dragon (Retrospect): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dx-FsHAQHp8.html The Divine Conspiracy (Retrospect) with orchestral intro: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7A21uWJmEfA.html Never Enough (Retrospect): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kgnrmeRNDlE.html Obsessive Devotion (Official): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fRR-eLW1lXw.html
Personally I disagree with you - I love Epica, and tend to prefer them to Nightwish, because Epica's music tends to be a fair bit heavier, and that's what appeals to me. But that's the wonderful thing about music (and art in general) - its appreciation is entirely subjective, and not everyone likes all the same things. If we did, the world would be a boring place. I appreciate you putting out honest reactions, and if this isn't your cup of tea, well then, it's just not your cup of tea.
Definitely igree, we can't all have the same taste. Epica is my nr1 band, and this song is not one of my favorite by them. The thing I like with epica is that I get both the beauty and harsh at the same time. And that they have really hard metal to soft blades. Usually one or two songs that people like, and that's true to most bands.
Epica is heavier than Nightwish and in many ways more metal. NW is softer metal. I love both bands and been a fan since their very beginnings. Sometimes music takes time to soak in. I notice some songs or bands that I liked immediately would loose its spark fairly quickly but some songs/bands that eventually grew on me would last far longer. Try putting on the album while cleaning house. I've done that with bands i didn't care for but something happens when you're not quite paying attention to it under microscope. Its like seeing or in this case hearing the bigger picture. Then I end up loving the band or song.
Totally get you. And it's about a reaction, not about "featuring the best songs that I know". Simple as that. Plus sometimes you really gotta listen to more songs from the same band, or more often to the same song to get the vibe. Not talking about this particular one, but some songs took me a while to like (and, of course: some never did. Haha). An album that instantly amazed me where lately Alter Bridge "Fortress" and In This Moment "The dream".
Honestly Epica has done extremely good albums after the first three that were more like milking the After Forever style (Mark Jansen, the composer and creator of both bands left After forever after 4 albums ; Floor Jansen was the singer then) with not much inspiration, Simone's voice was very cold and emotionless ... then Design your universe came, Requiem for the indifferent, Quantum enigma, and Holographic cprinciple and Solca system (and Attck on Titan) then whole albums were intense with a different personality from After Forever So not surprised you didn't "feel" much in listening to this
There are other songs on this album with a bit more aggression from her. I recommend "The Obsessive Devotion" and "Never Again" (Never Again has an Evanescence vibe to it). Track 3 was pretty hard-hitting at times too.
@@spupydo True, I must have had the title "Never Again" from Disturbed's "Asylum" album on my mind. If you say so. I love Never Enough. One of my Top 5 or 6 songs on the album.
I get what you mean. I guess you should check out some of the more recent songs of Epica like Edge of the Blade, Universal Death Squad, Beyond the Matrix, Unchain Utopia, The Essence of Silence... so many excellent songs. You just picked a... how should I put it... a song where thwy still were searching what their music should sound like. One I always skip for that matter... 😉
This is not my style of Rock n' Metal as I'm more of a 80's and 90's type of guy, but this is not too bad. I respect it, but definitely not into it. If anything I'm into, it's the angel vocals.
I think I upset someone - Mr/s. Z.Z ...Remember what I told you ? - Go on their u.tube page & check.....Once again it says "This page has no content" ....& we know what that means....a bit like Mr/s. Z.Z . Lol.
i''m behind you 100% on your reaction, The tracs musicianship is on point, especially the legato guitar solo, don't think I would revisit this as I'd rather throw on Dream Theater instead.
Hi Georgia, - Took me 30 seconds to know this track was "same old, same old" - uninteresting, forgettable and just a crappy song...Sorry if Epica fans are offended. It's my opinion. They can curse my love for Led Zeppelin & say what a crap rock group & it wouldn't bother me - coz "we" know the truth. Lol ... Everyone is entitled to their opinion - which therefore means - so are you ! ....As for talking over the song - I would have continued talking as nothing much was going on which was evident very quickly. I'm sure if you look hard enough you may find a great track but that's the problem....For me a group that's World Class you should have problems looking for a bad track....like Nightwish.....& Lol - Led Zeppelin....I totally agree with you. This doesn't cut it.....an Epic failure you might say. Byee X Jim
@Zestful Zeitgeist I guess you have never heard that well known saying - "Anyone who resorts to aggressive foul language insults during a difference of opinion lacks the intelligence to back up their own argument".
Good reaction .. I agree... after Nightwish this is hard to get excited about..even though Epica is full of talent ... I have not been able to get into them
