The "speaking to someone on public transport" became a social experiment for one of my classmates. She got handed a challenge in one of our classes to speak to the stranger sitting next to her in a bus in Finland and she often got the response "sorry lady, I'm married" and then the person turned away to face the window, no matter the gender. It was pretty hilarious tbh

It was super annoying tbf, the author seemed rather condescending half of the time, and put in remarks such as "Swedish women are more beautiful but there are more average women in Finland so go for Finland". Like gee, thanks for your generosity, also I bet your Finnish wife really appreciates that...

Definitely also triggered by bus seat hoarders 😬 Especially if someone sits on the isle seat when the window seat is empty and the bus is full. Years ago was when I was walking with crotches, hopped on a bus and completely healthy people had taken all the invalid-seats and _no one_ stood up to hand me a seat. Too shy back then as a teenager to have opened my mouth 😅
@stefi2581

*crutches , crotch is the area between your legs :) and that sounds absolutely awful what the heck how did no one give you a seat
@davecad
@davecad 6 лет назад
Ah that sucks. Londoners are actually pretty good when it comes to the priority seating. 9 times out of 10 someone will give their seat up for someone who needs it.
@0Quiwi0
@0Quiwi0 6 лет назад
I do put my bag on the other seat if the bus/train/whatever, but it's there just so I don't have to look like an idiot trying fit between the seats with the bag on my lap. Of course I do pick it up if it seems like the vehicle is getting full or someone asks for the seat.
@TurbineM
@TurbineM 6 лет назад
That is indeed very triggering. I place my bag on a seat when there's rather a lot of room in a public tranport, but when there are more people coming in, of course I take my bag in my lap instead. And that rudeness when people don't give their seats for those who need it more makes me angry. I once was in a bus sitting on a window seat and a lady of my age was sitting next to me. An old man with seemingly hard time with moving came in and no one even flinched. I was fuming and offered my seat for him. When he had taken a seat, that lady next to me rushed back to where she had sat and stared at me like I had juat ruined her day... 🤔
@MrZarewna
@MrZarewna 6 лет назад
Bus seat hoarders... Ugh.. I once completely lost my mind to this girl who had a bag next to her and it was the only seat left. I asked kindly "Can I sit here please?", she replied "No" and I told her "Excuse me, but did you pay for two seats?" which she answered "No" and I totally lost my mind and shouted "GET THAT FUCKING BAG OUT OF THAT CHAIR AND LET ME SHIT FOR FUCKS SAKE". I can say, even if I was happy to get a seat, she was so angry about it that I could hear her kettle boiling :D
@Mustavaris
@Mustavaris 6 лет назад
The "full" bus situation happened to me once, when I was on a bus in Tampere during my exchange studies in Finland. It hasn't been my first time in Finland, so I knew to some extent that having a stranger sit next to oneself on public transportation can cause discomfort for some Finns. For some reason I can't remember, I still sat down next to a finnish man, but when someone got off on the next stop and there where two free seats, I didn't know what to do. Would he see it as offensive if I stay next to him and keep intruding his personal space or would it be weird if I stand up and change my seat, so he could think I "dislike" him and want to get away from him as soon as possible? I decided to wait a little, but after a short time he said, slightly annoyed: "No, mene vaan", so that answered my question. But there are so many things to consider in those kind of situations, it's funny and weird at the same time 😅

Of course do make a second part. A couple of remarks: Stuff like what you described about the trains is why the finnish railway company VR is nicknamed "Venaa Rauhassa" which means "wait in peace." And about putting your bags on the seat next to you, that's just the biggest&most obvious sign of "don't sit there I want to be alone" ever. :D

Looks like a there's a little Matti inside you Dave. I've never witnessed the it's-raining-and-the-bus-stop-can-hold-only-one phenomenon. If it's raining, we do huddle in the small shelter. We don't like it but we don't like getting wet in the rain either. That stereotype keeps popping up, but i've never seen it. Been living in Finland for over 30 years.

@Charjune
@Charjune 6 лет назад
I have witnessed it a few times, last time was like two weeks ago. I was standing alone in a bus stop shelter, a young teen comes to bus stop but she stands just outside of the shelter by a corner. It started to rain but she didn't move. Not only she got wet but also her backpack got wet. I felt a bit pity for her to stand in the rain just because I was in the shelter, so I silently offered to "let her in" by moving a few steps to the left so she wouldn't be feeling that I'd be invading her personal space or something. Still she didn't move but stayed in the rain. I was born in Finland and still live here and sometimes I don't even understand this phenomena. Even if there would be people in the bus stop shelter I'd still want to take cover from rain, snow and hail while waiting for the bus.

5:36 A friend of mine came up with a mnemonic for Hund's rule, which is a rule in chemistry, based on how Finns sit in a bus. So atoms have electron orbitals, each of which can hold 2 electrons. Well, orbitals on the same energy level are filled the same way Finns sit in a bus: always put an electron into an empty orbital if there is one, and only after that you start filling the orbitals that already have one electron. Yeah it was more of a joke, really. You don't actually need a mnemonic for a rule as simple as this one.

The bag on the other seat is a sign; they don't want people to sit next to them. How do I know, I used to do that when I took the bus to school. The other way to lessen the chance to get an unwanted stranger next to you is to sit on the isle seat. Also before I trigger you - the bus was never full when I did that, I'm not an asshat.

Yessss, more of these xD I think heippalappu ('bye note'? haha) can be a negative thing, like, "Hey, you who played loud music at 1am, some people are trying to sleep here. Kthnxbai." So yeah it'd be awkward to get caught putting the heippalappu up. ;D And on the bus, if it starts looking like the bus is going to be full, it's just polite to 'allow' people sit next to you. x) Also.... I don't know why, but a lot of people (mostly older drunken men) seem not to care about the headphones on thing at all. D; It's like... dude, if I wanted to have a conversation with you, I'd take the damn things off. (What annoys me more, however, is teens / kids watching videos or Snapchat clips without any type of headphones plugged in. =__=;;) Anyway, I recently got this book as well - in English, though I'm a Finn. xD It's a quick, fun read. I also recommend Xenophobe's Guide to the Finns. P: It's a bit longer to read, but I loved the humour in that one!

On the bus I hated to be the first who has to sit next to someone. If there are already some people doing that, I don't feel so bad. Then I just look for the general area, where I tend to sit. And don't sit next to a lady who might feel it too much like an approach, if it isn't the only option. And the sitting bags piss me off too. I get it when there are still available seats, but after that... Then it's as stupid as those people who walk side by side in a board walk, so you as one person should go to the street with cars, when passing them. Or when you carry bags, people don' give the bag any space when passing you - though they had space to move. As if the bag is always so light, it's pleasant to keep shifting it ever so often - breaking a sweat when walking. There has been situations, when the bagged seat was the only one left - so I just said 'sorry...' and left waiting, trying to look like an accusing tired old man. I'm closer to 50 than 40, so it usually succeeds. And the bags moved. Some young lady blew air through her nose like sighing. Well, didn't ask her for a date. Maybe I should've - maybe she was playing hard to get? Couldn't probably afford her.

About the "public transport is late" picture, I think there was a hint of sarcasm in there - it showed the bus being late by 2 minutes. Public transport is actually quite punctual in Finland, for the most part, and a 5-10min delay is already considered out of the ordinary. I lived in the UK for half a decade and got used to the buses and trains coming "eventually", I suppose no one over there even expected the timetables to be spot on. And what's with the constant train strikes?? Is it still a thing? Really made my commute from Purley to London a nightmare at one point... But funnily enough, once I moved back to Finland, I found myself listing things that were better in England. Finland doesn't have good hummus!! Finland doesn't have Bailey's ice cream!! Finland doesn't do cheesecake in a lil yoghurt pot!!

Riding the public transportation was so stressful. Usually when I came home from school I had pretty full backpack either from having so many books in there, or possibly because I had clothes and toiletries with me because I usually spent nights at my boyfriend's or friends house and I didn't want to go all the way to my apartment to grab that stuff. In addition to that, I usually bought groceries on my way to home or friend's place. So, I had lots of bags with me whenever I used to buss, and the busses were most of the time pretty full because everyone was getting out of school/work. I didn't want to be that asshole taking up seats with my stuff, but I also almost suffocated holding my bags on my lap, so I placed them in the seat next to me. Therefore, EVERYTIME the bus stopped I'd panic and empty the seat next to me. And it was completely in vain because no one would even sit next to me! Tangent: I actually started to worry about no one sitting next to me on the bus. Couple of seats left and the person would sit next to drunk person, or mom with a crying baby. Like what? I'm autistic so I started to get really worried about the vibe I'm giving off to people. I don't think I'm threatening or stinky, I shower every day and children LOVE me. Only group of people that likes me on public transportation are children and toddlers. Their little faces light up when they see me. They always wave and smile at me. Am I funny looking? Do they think I'm some sort weird kids show character? I don't wear ANY bright color clothing, just blacks and neutrals. Riding the bus gave me an existential crisis 😳

Yeah.. I'm always stuck in my apartment when someone else is in the hallway. I just can't go there and if I'm in a hurry, I'm still just standing at the door and wishing that the other person would go away.

One I has to relate is that bus stuff. I ride a bus to my school since third grade and I always wanted to sit either first seats (near the driver) or back seats. And when ever I made that mistake to sit front seats a freaking grannies sat next to me. And did they talk? Oh f yes.. and EVEN if I had my headphones on. That was most uncomfortable and awkward because I usually had anything to say to them. And so annoying because old people talks to you still even if you have headphones on. I tried to listen to my music but the go damned still talked to me so I had to shift other headphone to hear and when I put it back that mofo still continued to talk :D I was so pissed! But yeah! More videos of reading this book, pretty please

The last video where you tested finnish sodas you said Kane's was cheating with their american style branding, Kane's is actually manufactured under license by Olvi. So Olvi can't change the branding. Just to let you know dave :)
