Want to know what I think of the fourth film in the series (The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull)? 🤔 My reaction is now available over on Patreon, both the one week early access to the RU-vid edit, plus the FULL REACTION: www.patreon.com/DawnMarieAnderson
The young Indiana Jones chronicles tv show is v good tv too. If you looking for more Indiana Jones. And the girls loved him too. I wouldn't know about that though.
Dawn, Airship travel was quite popular. The Hindenburg disaster in 1937 put a big dent in trust in airships. My father (who would have been 100 this year) was 13 at the time of the Hindenburg fire. He lived in Philly, about 60 miles from the crash site. He and his father heard the news over the radio of the Hindenburg fire. They got in his fathers car and drove to Lakehurst to see the aftermath. I don't remember if they went that evening or the next day. They were able to see all the debris of the burnt airship. I was always fascinated that he was able to see one of the most well known disasters of the time period.
The Hindenburg was due to America's stranglehold on helium. Germany had to use hydrogen for their zeppelins since sufficient quantities of helium were unavailable.
I think a dirigible has a solid frame and a blimp is just a large balloon. In the early 1900’s dirigibles were the first passenger airships out there and they were a very grand way to get around. They were starting to lose out to fixed wing aircraft because the planes were faster and could go anywhere without being dependent on the wind. The dirigible could carry more passengers and freight but after the Hindenburg crash people lost confidence in dirigible traffic. The military used them for a while and I think the navy still has a couple that they use occasionally. The most famous lighter than air ships now are the Goodyear blimps that are used for aerial shots of events now. I’ve seen one close while flying and they are really neat to watch.
I really enjoy Henry bumbling his way through the plot (and Marcus being completely useless 🤣). Sean Connery is very funny with his disapproving looks and bewilderment at his son's violent tendencies.
I remember when it first came out, he was still very much James Bond to me. So it was bizarre watching him in this almost comedic role. Absolutely loved it and it was just a real treat to see 007 be completely, adorably inept.
"Bloody Hell! I just realized I'm dancin along with the Nazis!" All the times I have watched reactions to this movie thats the first time I've had something to laugh at in that scene! Great reaction Dawn!
For the curious, I just googled "the music during the hitler scene in last crusade". The answer apparently is "Königgrätzer Marsch" by Johann Gottfried Piefke, written 1866, performed in an arrangement by Alexander "original Star Trek theme" Courage. This march is still popular, often performed by military bands in Germany, and also used by the armed forces of Chile and Jamaica.
I love how "Only the penitent man will pass" means you have to kneel. But the a-holes who made that trap also have a giant saw blade come up from the floor to cut that penitent man in half. So the quote should be "Only the penitent ninja with Jedi reflexes who can dodge-roll from his knees will pass."
I read somewhere that the first blade would be for those who don’t believe in God and wouldn’t kneel while the second is for those who believe in the Islamic faith because in that tradition they lay their heads to the floor when praying. The two blades ensure that only one who truly kneels (or Indy who ducks and rolls 😂) is able to pass.
@@flywithdavy That's an interesting theory. I like it. If that were true, then Indy could have merely knelt and all the blades would miss him. So maybe he dove forward to avoid that floor blade when he didn't need to. Or maybe he ducked in the wrong place. But it is an interesting idea.
@@flywithdavySimilarly, I had heard that the second blade is avoided as you throw yourself at the foot of God (as some would do to show their complete humility). Just saw this recently, and for the life of me I can't recall where. Oh wait, yes! It was a video doing a breakdown of _The Last Crusade_ from the channel *The Deep Dive,* just 6 days ago. They explained it a little better than I did, but that's the gist.
USA uses a wider age range for Scouts 10-18 I don't think the USA has Beavers as Cubs starts at the same age. Yes it is Gimli, he also voiced Treebeard and he was in the first Indy movie. "Asps... very dangerous. You go first."
@@Osprey850 The scenario you just proposed is EXACTLY what I hope and pray for. As an American with Russian heritage, I'd take Dawn over Trump and Putin any day - hands down. How cool would it be to hear that laugh in a debate or State of the Union address? She would definitely have my vote!
I saw this in the theatre when i was 13 with my then girlfriend, Laura. This was our first official and only date (shy and in Junior high)! I'm certain we'll always remember each other from our hundreds of phone conversations, our interactions in school, and this piece of classic cinema! Laura, you were always cool!
the guy who played the younger version of indy was river phoenix the brother of joaquin phoenix who played commudus in gladiator and the joker in joker
I love the first one, but the onscreen chemistry between Sean Connery and Harrison Ford really elevates 3 to the top of the list. I know I saw 4, but I just cannot even remember it. PS: Yes, that's Gimli.
Where did Indy learn to fight? Well, partly in the Belgian army during WWI. Surprise! There's also an Indiana Jones TV series (and I LOVED it!) from the 90's, following Indy as a child and a teen/young man. Harrison Ford even shows up in one episode as a middle-aged Indy! So, there's LOTS more Indy for you to enjoy!!
The greatest bit is when Julian Glover drinks the water from the wrong cup, and in the space of a few seconds transforms into his later creation, Grand Maester Pycelle.
Hi Dawn, you are finally watching my favorite Indiana Jones film!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Cub Scouts are the younger scouts and Boy Scouts are the older ones, Dawn. Harrison Ford has a scar on his chin in real life. The whipping scene with the lion explains how he got it.😉Because the cup was a simple design he thought it was the cup of a carpenter. 🏆Great reactions to the third Indiana Jones film, Dawn!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Yeah Dawn, John Rhys-Davies played Gimli in LOTR, and also Sallah here!! It´s funny because he played Gimli as a dwarf, and it´s tallest than Aragorn or Legolas in real life.
In Greek, Jehovah started with an I, because there was no symbol of J back then. Like the letters INRI inscribed on Jesus' cross stood for Jesus Nazaremus Rex Judaeorum. (I'm not sure about the spelling), which meant Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
Dawn’s laugh at the Marx Brothers joke was fabulous, and she still hasn’t seen Animal Crackers. I now wonder how many people saw the movie when it was released and had never seen a Marx Brothers movie.
Yes, me, but I was 9 or 10 when Last Crusade was released, but didn't see it until 1991 on VHS. We got all the tapes from Burger King. I noticed the Marx Bros reference back then. Then one day at Applebee's I saw a vintage movie poster for a Marx Bros film and had to ask if that's who Sean Connery was talking about. I saw my first Marx Bros film I think in 1995. Taped it off AMC, "A Night In Casablanca". Watched that so many times, maybe as much or more than "Last Crusade". And that, friends, is how we fly across the ocean.
Fun fact: One of the original plot elements was that the guy who gives Indy his signature hat, was originally gonna be Abner Ravenwood, Marion's father
If that were true, which is could be, it's worth reminding yourself that at this point, Marion Ravenwood is three years old. Yes, it DOES get squicky when you run the numbers.
@@spinblack0 the time frame and the reason for the hostility of Marion in the first movie makes sense, alas it still wasn't confirmed for it to be true, I would be amazed if it was part of the lore
@@spinblack0 I'm guessing Indy was a college student working for Abner, who had a 16ish... daughter named Marion. That would make Indy 4 to 8 years older than Marion.
Fun little Easter Egg for ya. When Donavan shoots Indy's Dad, he's using a Walther PPK, the same gun that James Bond (also played by Sean Connery ) used.
Crusade: 1. Each of a series of medieval military expeditions made by Europeans to the Holy Land in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries. "the fanaticism engendered by the Crusades" 2. a vigorous campaign for political, social, or religious change. "a crusade against crime"
The reason why the Grail wasn't super glitzy is because Christ was not that type of person. He and his father were carpenters and so it wouldn't be a huge gilded super-ornate goblet sort of thing. He was more humble yet perfectly confident about his message and mission for the world.
And it would’ve simply been a cup that he used at one point, and no formal, royal thing. Indy looked at it logically, while Donovan was too wrapped up in his greed and pride. It just had to be a special, shiny, magical artifact in his mind.
Indy knew it was that one because of what he said: "That's the cup of a carpenter." Jesus, despite being the "king of kings", lived a humble existence. He didn't have wealth or opulence. This one is also my favorite in the franchise, with the original coming a close second.
The most famous blimp accident was the Hindenburg, which in 1937 burst into flames while landing in New Jersey (USA), killing all passengers. Airships used hydrogen to inflate, which can be extremely flammable. That was pretty much the end of airships (blimps) as passenger vehicles. The Hindenburg had made several successful trips to the US (from Germany) before the fateful accident. Blimps now use helium for inflation. It's interesting since the movie takes place in 1938, which would've put it after blimps stopped taking passengers. Thanks for reacting! This was a satisfying end to the trilogy.
decided to look for a reaction vid to the Indiana Jones movies in light of the new installment coming out and this scratched the itch. delightful reactions
people regularly travelled in blimps during that time period. but the hindenburg disaster (when one of them caught fire and killed everyone on it) caused companies to no longer use blimps, so they switched to passenger airplanes instead.
26:29 Actually the zeppelin was a very common means of transoceanic transportation. The zeppelin dock in NYC was at the top of the Empire State Building.
"A cup of a carpenter" meaning the type of cup a carpenter could afford. So, it does not necessarily mean that it is made of wood, but likely a carpenter isn't carrying around a cup of gold with jewels.
Yes, that's Gimli. Also known as John Rhys-Davies. He also did the voice of Treebeard in the Lord of the Rings. He also plays Sallah in this movie and in Raiders of the Lost Ark. He's also in the cast list for the next Indiana Jones movie coming soon: Dial of Destiny.
Ok, I get the magic box at the beginning, why did the train car have a false floor? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't perform that trick in a cluttered train caboose.
A crusade is basically a pilgrimage when Europeans would travel to the holy land in the around the 11th and 12 century, so it's like and adventure, but not just and Indiana Jones adventure, no the riding off into the sunset at the end pleased Steven Spielberg because he saw it as a closing of the curtains to the series, but when the tv show The Adventures of young Indiana Jones had an episode that Harrison Ford made a guest appearance as an older version of indy, that gave George Lucas the idea for a newer adventure with and older Indy, so he had this idea for a a while because after Last Crusade, no one was interested in making another
Crusade comes from a Latin word meaning "marked with a cross", and referred to the wars fought in the name of the Catholic Church. Now, it has come to mean any mission to which someone is heavily devoted or even obsessed.
The Crusades were holy wars, launched initially by Pope Urban II, to recapture the holy lands (Jerusalem) from the Muslims who held the lands at that time. The first crusade was around 1096.
25:52 the actor playing Hitler is Michael Sheard-he had earlier played Hitler more than 20 years earlier in the ITV Children's Science Fiction series The Tomorrow People
Yes. The Last Crudade is the best one. Yes, John Rhys-Davies plays Gimli. But he was Sallah first in "Raiders." A crusade in this context is a 'holy mission.' The previous crusades were conducted to find the holy grail (like in Monty Python) and, I think, to convert people to Christianity along the way if possible. BTW, the opening sequence also explains how Indiana got the scar on Harrison Ford's chin.
The airship in this movie is a dirigible, not a blimp. The difference is that it has a rigid frame determining its shape. Back in the day their buoyancy was dependent on hydrogen, which is the lightest element but very flammable. The Hindenburg was a dirigible that very famously burned and crashed.
I like that they showed how Indy got the scar on his chin. In real life, Harrison Ford got the scar when his chin hit the steering wheel of a car he was driving when it crashed. I recall Harrison saying that in an interview. The sunset shot was shot on a really big ranch in Texas. It was one of the few places in the world that the land was completely unobstructed by anything.
Crusades are the Christian medieval military expeditions to the Holy land and the root of the word is cross, but in French or Spanish. I always assumed that this is obvious to English speakers, but maybe that's because in my language (other European language) our word for crusade is literally made of the words "cross-bearing expedition" in our language of course.
There's an argument to be made that it's just retreading stuff from 'Raiders', but the young Indy prologue and the Connery/Ford chemistry makes it arguably better. Also, the tank sequence is one of the best action set-pieces ever.
Lucasfilm Games made a point&click adventure with the same name on the PC back in the day. In it you culd actually save the grail from disappearing forever in a hole if you used your whip on the hole. It also had a mean copy protection in that you were never able to choose the right grail at the end if you had a pirated version.
Blimp travel is fairly safe as long as you don't fill them with hydrogen. They were just slow compared to airplanes is why they aren't used anymore. Last Crusade was always my favorite Indiana Jones movie.
Not only is this the best movie in the series, it's my favorite of all the movies I've seen so far in my life. Action, humor, story, special effects, camera, sound, characters and of course the fantastic music by John Williams are just so damn fun ! 🥰👍
Dawn, Christian tradition holds that Jesus was a carpenter, presumably trained by St. Joseph. The cup that Indiana chose was wooden, but the interior was turned to gold by being in contact with His sacred blood. In the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" the plot revolved around the holiest lost relic in Judaism, and in this film it was the holiest lost relic in Christianity. The "crusades" were military expeditions by medieval European Christians against Muslims to regain control of the Holy Land. In the context of the film it means a sacred mission.
Yes, that's John Rhys-Davies, who played Gimli in The Lord of the Rings. Sean Connery nearly didn't play this part because in real life he's only 12 yrs older than Harrison Ford but, im so glad he did.... Definitely my favourite of the franchise
What a great reaction!!! The guy who played Short Round in the last movie is Ke Huy Quan. He starred in The Goonies, a year after Temple. The Goonies is a brilliant film that hopefully you'll react to. In this movie I love the way Sean Connery and Harrison Ford interact as father and son.
In the 80s, DC had a comic series called Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew, and a lot of the names of places and characters were animal puns of stuff from our world. In issue #5, they join Oklahoma Bones (and his pet snake Whipley, and yes he uses the snake as a whip), in an adventure called Rabbits of the Lost Ark.
38:18 the Greek word we translate as carpenter could also be used to describe a stone smith. Chances are, in Galilee, a carpenter would mostly work in stone as there weren’t any large trees there. Thus Joseph and Jesus were most likely stone smiths. Even if they worked in wood, their dishes would be some form of earthenware since wood is very difficult to clean and cleanliness is a very important part of Jewish eating rituals. 43:09 in the 1930s, the Germans started transatlantic flights with dirigibles (which are blimps with a frame inside holding the gas bags: the “blimp” in the movie was actually a dirigible). They could have been fairly safe except the U.S. has most of the earth’s supply of helium and it being a strategic product and the poor relationship between the U.S. and N*zi Germany, we would not sell any to them. As a result, they had to use hydrogen. Look up the Hindenburg disasters to see where that led. In reality, while dirigible travel was faster than ships, it was still a multi day trip between Europe and North America, so aircraft would have eventually supplanted them anyways even if Germany had had helium.
Dawn usually has too many great lines to cite just one; her 'Bloody hell' when she realized she was dancing along to the Nazis really made my day though!
Yes Blimps were a way to travel but the gas in the balloon part was hydrogen which was very very volital, explosive. Look up the Hendenberg Blimp. It will explain why they stopped using them lol. It exploded and a lot of people died. Massive explosion. They also used blimps during the war in Germany.
John Rhys-Davies that plays Sallah in this movie was also in Raiders of The Lost Ark and yes he plays Gimli in Lord of The Rings. I met John and he is such a cool dude. Julian Glover that plays Walter Donovan in this movie I met him last year and he was such a kind person. He was happy to see me and when getting a photo with him he said give me a hug. I gave him a hug and we talked a bit. He is an amazing person
Dawn, the Crusades were several holy wars that took place in the Middle Ages. The Christian Europeans countries formed an alliance to try and take back the Holy Land, Israel, from the Mulims. There were several Crusades over the years.
generically Crusade means Holy War. in this case specifically the Crusades were a series of holy wars to conquer the Middle East for the Holy Latin Church. if you've seen the Robin Hood film starring Kevin Costner, Robin was coming home to England from fighting in one of the Crusades when the movie starts (not a spoiler).
There's a time (many a time) to laugh, but there's also some times to be SERIOUS in this movie, Dawn. The Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword was a secret society sworn to keep the Holy Grail safe from discovery and misuse. Members of the organization wore a tattoo of the cruciform on their chests.
"Crusade" means "war for the cross," but is often used to describe any sort of holy war or important endeavor, especially one that's considered in some way noble. "Jehovah" is one of the common English translations of the Hebrew tetragrammaton... which is four Hebrew letters (translated more or less as "YHWH") used as the name of God in various books that were compiled into the Bible... although it became custom to substitute the word "LORD" in many English translations, as some people got salty about speaking God's name out loud.
You asked about Indy's knowledge of what the grail was. Jesus was a carpenter, and a man of the working class. He would not have cared for gold or silver, or any riches of the earth.
Jesus Christ was a carpenter, which would preclude any cup with jewelry and precious metals. Although if the Roman centurion caught the blood in the cup, that would mean the cup could be a centurion's cup and maybe that could actually be a bit more fancy?
