Seeing this band February 12th. I hope they play this song, it's one of my top 50 Tool songs. The more you listen to a Tool song, the more you get from it. Tool takes you on a journey. They are on their own level.
"silence legion! Stay your poison. Silence legion, stay out of my way!!!" Such a powerful and often overlooked ending lyric! The depth to this meaning I could write a thesis on, but in short I think it is as follows. His mother is dying and he has no control over it. He feels helpless and thus makes pleas to wish it all away (the bargaining stage of grief and loss). He would give all his fame and fortune away for just one real day again with his mother. It is not to be though and so he spirals into despair and wishes not to become overwhelmed by the darkness and demons of anger, sorrow, rage and regret; the nameless multitude of demons of the pain of loss and so he ends this song with a cry for help, a prayer, a scream struggling against that darkness that he and his soul would fight that loss, those demons and toss them aside for him to be alone with his mother and grief to heal and come through the other side stronger, not letting the negativity drag him down in line with his mother's wishes to strive on and let her light shine with him. It rolls perfectly that way into 10,000 days and wings for Marie.
@@LanceThompsonKssooner I've heard that as well and that may be true. For me it seems to fit better that it is about his mom. It flows better with the album and into the next song. I could be wrong but this is my interpretation.
@LanceThompsonKssooner There are many interpretations of the meaning of this song. 46&2, as I understand it was about his son. All of 10,000 Days was about Judith.
In this last October, in Sacramento at Aftershock, they opened with this song. My heart dropped, and the following set did not disappoint. Tool is the epitome of excellence.
That's the beauty of art....we all can interpret it differently depending on our experiences. For me, he's referring to his balance, his center, and losing that would be Paramount to losing his life. Nothing would be worth it, the money, success, celebrity, all would mean nothing without his center. But I love to hear the so many different interpretations from reactors.
