Argentina grew into the tournament and the experience gained against the Netherlands helped them settle down in extra time/penalties against France. I think if Argentina hadn’t topped the group and played France in the quarterfinals they would’ve been knocked out but I’m glad it worked out this way and Messi was finally able to lift the WC.

I really hope that this world cup will finally help football fans to see that there are amazing teams outside of Europe and maybe south america. If you ever watched morocco play you would never have put them last in their group or at least not after canada. I mean not even the most optimistic moroccan predicted that we will make it to the semi finals but at least we had enough faith in our team to make it past the groups stage. Hopefully now people will be more open minded towards other teams that are not europeans

Great analogue about England, Spen! You look at Germany not even making it out the group, Brazil losing at the 1/4's as well. It was a tournament of surprises. I just hope England's young core with 1 or 2 tournaments under their belt can now kick on and lift a trophy at the Euro's. Although how many tournaments do some of our leaders like Walker and Henderson have at their peak?

Group H, I actually knew that Korea was gonna advance in a tiny sliver because of some talent from there. But the big factor why that was true: Uruguay had old players that couldn’t do it anymore and young players that weren’t ready for the big stage.

In regards to the England point, it’s easy to say “that’s what I expected, so it’s good enough” (not word for word, but that’s your point) & I would completely agree, but then you watch the game & it’s a France team that had 1 chance & scored 2 goals. Southgate leaving it too late to make decisive substitutions & all in all just lacking that “umf” that a top manager will give you in these games. I’m more than happy to give him the next tournament, but even if he wins it I’d like to see a change going forward for the next generation without the likes of Kane, Henderson, Stones, Walker & Pickford, ect. As the players coming through are genuinely world class & I don’t think Southgate knows how to get the best out of them.

Sorry, nothing against Southgate, he has very good results backing him, but tbh, as a german, he reminds me a bit too much of Jogi Löw. Being good with the board, not thinking too much out of the box, having obvious favourites and just being good enough to please the majority. I still think the cup in 2014 was a lucky one for us, before brazil the performances were average. Maybe Southgate wins something in the next tournaments and it was even unlucky to match up against France in the quarters, but England nonetheless keeps failing to beat any of the better teams. He's the best manager since ages for England, but would he also do well in any other scenario? I've talked with a lot of people about england and i have a feeling that generally people outside of England judge his qualities a bit more realistically. But we'll see. With this squad he must win something!

im a bit gassed i got all the groups correct (like who wins and comes through, 3rd and 4th) sounds impossible cause of japan and morocco but dont ask me how I just guessed in my head, I didn’t like germany sooo.. but I got 4/8 correct in the 16s and 2 to be correct in quarters and 1 to be correct in semis, saying an argentina vs morocco in the finals, for argentina to win and ruin the moroccan dream, but besides morocco, I did get 3rd place to be croatia, but I said beating france after the finals.

I would disagree with the Netherlands being dark horses they have always been strong internationally except for 2016-2018 due to changes around the team. So the dark horse as the Netherlands is not really appropriate. Being dutch I expect Netherlands going to the QF minimum and can definitely reach the finals. I definitely believe we could’ve made it to the finals if we kept pushing after scoring the 2-2 but due to our lack of urgency and very defensive play style we lost the QF to Argentina and just unlucky with pens.

Idk why you said France would lose to Argentina in the final. Surely nobody thought that they would collapse the way they did.

Let’s be honest here, France were dominated by Argentina in the final and dominated by Morocco in the semi’s. England made them look good against them. England have the deepest and probably best squad in the tournament this year and to not get past the quarter finals is a bit of an embarrassment. It seems every tournaments whenever England have to play a nation around their standard they bottle it
