"Wally World" is Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, which is about a 10-minute drive from my house. I went there many times as a kid. The big white roller coaster is called "Colossus," and the smaller white one, with the loopty-loop, is called "Revolution." The big pirate ship one is called "Buccaneer."
@@90Beater Yep I worked there too in the mid 80's...Ride host on mainly Freefall, Spinout, Gold Rusher, and Sarajevo Bobsleds (remember that one)? lol
Did not some guy live with six flags pass and meal plan , $150 for 2 meals a day and $30 for all drinks . thats $180 for a year , annual pass $120 , its less than dollar per day , and if you live in the area , why not 🙂
The guy who you were asking "Is that him? It looks like him." was Brian Doyle Murray (a co-writer of the movie). He's the brother of the much more famous Bill Murray.
Aunt Edna is played by Immogene Coca, one of the all-time best comedians on American television!!! 👏👏👏 She is like comedy royalty. She was huge in the 1950s, when she was partnered with Sid Ceasar.
National Lampoon was a popular humor magazine in the US, known for its savage and adult flavor humor compared to the more juvenile MAD magazine, peaking probably in the late 1970's and early 80's. They branded several great comedies early on, the first being the National Lampoon's Animal House. Killing the dog is on brand for the magazine. One of their most famous covers featured a photo of a worried looking dog with a gun held to its head, and a promise to spare the dog if you buy the magazine. The magazine eventually collapsed and the name was bought by someone who licensed the brand out to a lot of awful, terrible, worthless comedies, so the brand name by itself is no longer a guarantee. The Chevy Chase vacation movies are great, particularly this one and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Wally World is 100% taking the piss out of Disney. The owner even looks like Uncle Walt. Oh, and one more note. As Wally World isn't real, they filmed the rides at a couple of Six Flags parks in California. They're a popular chain of theme parks, a bit more accessible than the Disney parks.
@@phookadude Most all of the Lampoon's stories were short stories, including this one, and no one story filled an entire issue. You can read it in its entirety online in a matter of minutes.
I could be wrong, but I believe the scenes shot at Six Flags were shot at the original Six Flags Over Texas, in Arlington, TX. I am not even sure if thry had started opening other parks yet at that point. Then Time Warner bought the chain and ruined the franchise. I miss the days when Six Flags was about the different cultures, not just Looney Tunes and DC Comics!
Chevy Chase’s physical humor and goofball incompetence is on point. Did you notice when he and Ellen are talking in the kitchen she is scraping the dishes off in the trash and he is wiping them off and putting them in the cupboard instead of the dishwasher? Stuff like that.
When I saw this in the theater with my sisters, it got to that scene and my oldest sister blurted out, "Gross, he's just putting the dirty dishes back in the cupboard!" and half the women in the audience gasped and many men just started cracking up. It was a great mix of reactions for that. Then later, when Aunt Edna, after finding out the dog peed on their sandwiches, just shrugged and kept on eating hers....nearly everyone let out a " oooohhhh!". I just love those parts, displaying the less filtered humor of the 80s.
@@wheatgrinder83 Most don't remember what movie that scene pokes fun at, Chariots of Fire from 1981. It has a very touching scene where friends all track runners in the 1924 olympics, are running on a beach with the same music playing. It was a very serious scene, but Chevy Chase can make anything funny. He could get people to laugh at C-Span...
The little man at the car dealership was Eugene Levy (American Pie,Shitts Creek etc.) who along with John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, the director of this film Harold Ramis and others, got their start on Canada's SCTV sketch show. Before the National Lampoon movies were a series of comedy albums starring many people later on SNL - John Belushi, Bill Murray, his brother Brian Doyle Murray (the mayor in Groundhog Day), Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, Harold Ramis, and more. Don't let not celebrating Thanksgiving stop you from watching Trains, Planes, and Automobiles. It's all about the relationship between John Candy and Steve Martin.
Brian Doyle Murray was also the Kamp Komfort Clerk in this movie she thought looked like Bill Murray. Strangely though, he doesn't sound like himself. I wonder if his voice was dubbed by another actor or his voice just radically changed for some reason. It's distinctive crackle is absent.
National Lampoon started as a humor magazine called The Harvard Lampoon at Harvard University. It grew so big that they decided to start making movies.
They started with a stage show first, Lemmings, with Chevy, John Belushi and Christopher Guest. Then The National Lampoon Radio Hour, featuring Harold Ramis as one of the performers and writers.
" National Lampoon's " use to be a comedy comic book. Then it went out of print and movies were made by National Lampoon's like : Vacation , Animal House , Class Reunion , Movie Madness , Joy of sex , Loaded Weapon 1 , Senior Trip , Golf Punks , Nation Lampoon's Van Wilder , Nation Lampoon's Repli - Kate , Blackball , Jakes booty call . Those are a few of many more
I enjoy all four of the original Vacation movies. I hope you will continue in release order - Vacation, European Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Vegas Vacation
I once saw a DVD collection of all 4 movies in a bargain bin somewhere. I picked it up and saw the tagline was "3 great comedies together for one low price. 4 movies included". I left laughing and feeling pity for whichever movie was the outlier that pack. Ouch.
European vacation is a great follow-up. Favorite sandwich filler is a tough one, as is bread, as the two compliment each other. A Reuben isn't right without Rye, but clubs are perfect on sour dough. Whole wheat bread is fantastic with most basic sandwiches.
"I think you're all fucked in the head!" is such a hilarious line for Clark to say to his kids and his wife. A real laugh out loud moment for me. Imagine saying that!
I saw this movie in the theater back in 83 and countless times since then but I still laugh everytime I watch this classic. His freakout in the car when they say they want to go home has me in tears and unable to breath because I am laughing so hard.
The stabbing motion with the banana at his wife in the shower, along with the noise he makes while doing it, is a reference to the classic movie Psycho, directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
The late, great Harold Ramis, who was in Ghostbusters, also directed the amazing Groundhog Day and John Hughes also directed the classic Trains Planes and Automobiles with Steve Martin and John Candy.
As a kid, I was always thinking Harold Ramis delivered the line "We're all finished here, Mr. Walley. You want us to take em downtown and book em?" then when I discovered IMDB, I found out that I was right.
In 1983 I was visiting college friends in LA, they lived in Carson and worked, so I took the RTD (buses) to DisneyLand on my last day before heading back to my small hometown in Minnesota. The bus ride was an adventure, with a change of busses in Watts... finally got there and asked the driver where the entrance was, he pointed to it and said, but DisneyLand is closed today! They closed one day that year to do maintenance, preparing for the 1984 Olympics. I never got to visit DisneyLand, and went home the next day.
I just KNEW this was gonna be your cup of tea 😂😂. Tying Aunt Edna to the bumper? Thats dark lmao. Favorite Sandwich? Right now im having a roast beef and cheese sandwich, with a bit of mayo and cucumber salad, the best 😋
BLT with plenty of bacon and several slices of vine grown tomatoes. Mayo on both slices of honey wheat bread with a little hot sauce mixed with the mayo. Secret is to toast the bread and salt/pepper the tomatoes. 🤤
Dawn, I have to say, one of my all time favorite sandwiches is a butter toasted peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Make a PB & J sandwich, butter both sides, toast it in a skillet or in the oven until brown and enjoy.
Awe, Geez a Lou, love! John Hughes was the king of the 80s comedic movies, hands down! The Breakfast Club is a great flick. Not gonna ruin nuthin, I promise! You'll probably notice that all his main characters are based in Illinois, specifically Chicago. That being said, I can't wait until you see my favorite Hughes movie. Trains, Planes and Automobiles. As for my favorite sandwich? I'm a born n raised New Yorker and I gotta tells ya, pastrami on rye with melted munster cheese and mustard. IMO, it's to die for. Lol! And as always, your reactions, critique and comments always puts a smile on my face! Love you tons! Sees ya when we sees ya!
After you've seen this one, the rest are all must-sees! Following was "European Vacation", then "Christmas Vacation", "Vegas Vacation" & most recently they did a new "Vacation" about Rusty grown up taking his own family across country. See ya! 🤘🌎❤
Notes: - The car salesman is Eugene Levy - The man behind the desk at at the tent resort is Brian Doyle-Murray, Bill Murray's brother - There's a German folk song, "Auf de Schwäbsche Eisebahne", about a farmer who tied his goat to the back of a passenger train, with a similar result to what happened to the dog I think my favorite sandwich is a Reuben sandwich, or a meatball sub.
My favorite sandwich is from a local Irish bakery here in Boston. It's an Irish breakfast sandwich on a toasted homemade roll: Irish breakfast sausages, the real ones, imported from Ireland; Irish White pudding, Irish Black pudding; A big slab of thick Irish rasher; Engulfed in Melted imported Irish cheddar cheese. Delicious.
I'm so looking forward to The Breakfast Club. I won't spoil anything about it. 🤐 Favorite sandwich is fried bologna on toasted wheat bread. It's a Southern thing.
John Hughes was from Chicago, so many of his movies are set in Chicago. The beautiful girl in the Ferrari is Christie Brinkley, who was a super model in the 1980's. You can't blame Clark for falling for a beautiful dream girl in a red Ferrari can you?? "Where did the other girl go to.. maybe she can join in." ... I like where your mind was going. 😍😅❤ Favorite sandwich is a BLT (bacon lettuce tomato) on toasted rye bread, with mayo and ground pepper. - yum.
It's one of the better 80s comedies. So is Christmas Vacation. And I would add Ruthless People. Ghostbusters. Airplane! Caddyshack. Stripes. A Christmas Story. Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Beetlejuice. Big. Spaceballs. The Naked Gun. Sixteen Candles. Dragnet. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? I know the 80s is generally looked down on by film lovers as the worst decade for films but I disagree with that.
Thinly sliced Pastrami is my favorite kind of sandwich. If it's available I like rye bread with the caraway seeds in it. There was a sandwich shop in California called Togo's that I got hooked on. The #9 was their Pastrami. white bread roll... mustard, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pepperoncini peppers. I miss those sandwiches so much since I moved to New Mexico.
This is such a classic film. Chevy's comedic timing was at its peak and held it there for years. The line about "asteroids" will always get an laugh out of me. OH, and to answer your test question, my favorite sandwich has a turkey and an American cheese with buttered bread. Sometimes toasted.
I wonder if the reference is lost on modern gamers. Of course there is always the classic puzzle of why the are called asteroids when they are outside the hemisphere and hemorrhoids when they’re in your ass.
Elvis Presley’s Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich Preheat a grill pan or griddle over medium heat. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Spread peanut butter on other side of each slice of bread. Place banana slices on top of peanut butter. Top with bacon slices and drizzle with honey. Top with the remaining slice of bread, buttered side up. Place sandwich on grill pan. Cook until golden brown and crispy, about 3 minutes per side. Remove to cutting board, slice in half, and serve immediately.
The National Lampoon film to react to is ANIMAL HOUSE. I like plain sandwiches, but when I splurge I go for the Classic Reuben sandwich (grilled): Sliced corned beef Sauerkraut Swiss cheese Thousand Island Dressing Toasted Rye Bread.
I'm a huge fan of Reubens as well. In general, I don't care for sauerkraut, but on a Reuben it tastes great. Animal House is the best demonstration of classic National Lampoon humor. I highly recommend it. For more Chevy Chase, I recommend Foul Play, Caddy Shack, and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I love your sense of humor, Dawn.
Hamburger Helper is a boxed dinner, you add water and browned hamburger meat to it. It's pretty much noodles and powdered seasonings. So Eddie was just grilling patties of seasoned macaroni with no meat.
Aunt Edna was the wonderful Imogene Coca, a zany comedian from the 50's and 60's, best known for being in Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, which featured Caesar's great comedic ability and some of the best writers of all time, including Carl Reiner, Woody Allen and Neil Simon. That would be a great one for you to do, Dawn!
Mel Brooks was another writer on Your Show of Shows. He was later executive producer of My Favorite Year, a movie very loosely inspired by the experiences of Brooks on that show.
If you want to learn more about what "National Lampoon" refers to, you should look up Douglas Kenney (Wikipedia would be good). You will find that he wrote the movies Animal House and Caddyshack, and that he started the magazine National Lampoon -- an offshoot from The Harvard Lampoon, of which he was the editor as an undergraduate there.
Favorite sandwich is a tough one. I do like tuna fish, I mix in pickle relish and some chopped celery, and mayonnaise of course. We have a whole grain bread called Oat Nut that I like.
That dog was not a good boy, but didn't deserve to go out like that. Easily the darkest scene in the movie, but the way the cop chokes up makes me laugh 😅
@@LordVolkov That was National Lampoon, dark, black comedy. The magazine was much, much darker, including the John Hughes story this movie was based on.
I've been watching this movie my entire life. Literally, some of my first memories are of watching this movie. Never before have I considered that Rusty chugged the beer because it wasn't his first one. Ive missed that joke for 39 years. Thanks for bringing it to my attention 🙂
Hi Dawn Marie!🙂I like this film, but "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (1989) is my favorite in the series. The trip was 2408 miles long. Yeah, Walley World is a fake Disney want to be amusement park. Although, there is actually one in Canada. They used Six Flags in Valencia California for filming. Mr. Walley happens to resemble Roy Disney. The sports car/skinny dipping girl is well known model Christie Brinkley. Great reactions to your first Vacation film, Dawn Marie!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
@@Dr.Acula76 Nope, I meant Roy Disney, Walt's brother who was also heavily involved in the company. The actor resembles a young Roy Disney more than Walt.
Hi Dawn! You asked if the Wally World location was a real park and it is. Those scenes were filmed at Magic Mountain which is located just northwest of Los Angeles. At one time that was the largest wooden rollercoaster ever built. I love your content. Huge fan! (Ham, pastrami, and mayo with any soft bread.)
The guy at the tent camp that you thought you recognized was Brian Doyle Murray, brother to Bill Murray who was an original Saturday Night Livcast member and also in a lot of films. Brian has done a lot of films as well, many with Bill and probably some you may have seen.
Gotta love the Griswalds..he tries to be the perfect dad, the cool dad, the dad that takes his family on road trips, I mean it's like an American tradition for kids to have went on at least one summer road trip with their parents, it's just a beautiful thing and I hope it's still a common thing
Hi Dawn - Hamburger Helper was a staple for a lot of lower middle class people. You could buy cheap ground beef and then get a few different flavors and noodle types of Hamburger Helper and you have a meal (minus a vegetable). It was the noodles and a seasoning packet, I think. I guess Eddie likes the noodles and seasoning.
10:02 Remember the video to Billy Joel's 'Uptown Girl' song ? There she is, Christie Brinkley. She actually went on to marry him in 1985 after meeting him in the same year as the movie, 1983.
Favorite sandwich? It's a tough call, but I think I have to go with a homemade turkey sandwich: start with homemade wheat bread, add a bit of mayo, and then pile on leftover turkey (especially the dark meat!) from a big holiday dinner. It does take a lot of setting up, though, since somebody has to make a big holiday dinner _and also_ bake a batch of fresh bread. So I generally only get to make this kind of sandwich once or twice a year.
Great reaction video. This movie always cracks me up. Sandwiches.. Sometimes I still like Peanut butter and grape jelly. BUt I usually rolls with this.. One slice of bread down, mayonnaise then two or 3 pieces of Ham or Salami, then a slice of cheese, American or Gouda, or Swiss, then 1 more slice fo bread, some more mayonnaise, or mustard, depending two to 4 slices of turkey or chicken, another slice of cheese, lettuce, tomato and sometimes a pickle, but usually on the side. These are often referred to as a "Dagwood" for the cartoon Blondie.
this is so cool. a classic. thanks for this little reminder of our yesterday. still watchin ya and diggin the accent. cute. shoutout from Gatlinburg, Tennessee. U.S.A. this picture is funny as hell. so are you. peace and love to you and yours. see you on the next. later.
My family drove from Toronto to Los Angeles and back in a Ford Country Squire station wagon in 1974. My poor father never recovered. I love this movie for that very reason.
I subscribed to and read National Lampoon for years. It was a groundbreaking humor magazine that had no boundaries. It's first big movie production was the legendary Animal House. The magazine has kind of disappeared since then, sadly. This movie reminded me a bit too much of my family's own vacations.
I too am a lover of sandwiches and get jealous when I see people eating them. I used to go to Subway a lot and found my favorite sandwich to be the following: Spicy Italian (pepperoni & salami) on herbs & cheese bread, no cheese added, spinach, tomato, a small amount of onions, a lot of jalapeños, a little mustard and a little mayonnaise. Sometimes I'd add oil & vinegar, salt & pepper or have it toasted. The theme park they were at in the movie is a real place, but it isn't called Wally World. It was Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California. The roller coaster they were on is the "Colossus." I've been in it. It's very jittery.
Always love your reactions. National Lampoons Animal House is another great classic. It’s actually Kevin Bacons first movie. And I like Roast Beef and Cheddar.
I've got the same problem with motion sickness, where I used to like boats and carnival rides and so forth, but the older I get the easier it is to make me sick. I used to ride motorcycles, but that also makes me sick now. I've been to multiple doctors about it, and none of them have any more to say about it beyond "This sometimes happens to people when they get older." It's so bad that I have even got sick changing the oil under my car. Life isn't fair. Sure I can take medication for it, but that medication puts me to sleep! Not good on a motorcycle.
Back in the olden Days I rode My 1974 Yamaha TX-500 on many long trips. I wasn't a World Class Rider, but I was a very good Rider. My balance and situational awareness was excellent. This stood Me in good stead and fortunately I never had a significant mishap although I had a Couple of Close Calls. An old Friend who still rides & is the same age as Me, was wanting Me to buy a Bike and take a long trip with him someplace. The Idea appealed to Me greatly. Sadly I don't trust My balance nor My reaction time. And older people don't mend as fast. I had to decline. I doubt I will ever Ride again, but Man, do I have amazing Memories.
@@thrummer1953 I rode for the better part of 30 years and have a lot of great memories. Almost all of it on Triumphs of various models, from a 64 TT special to a 2011 Street Triple. (Probably my favorite was the latter.) It just got to the point where I'd be so sick I couldn't stand up after about 10 minutes of riding. The TX 500 was a great bike, and I would have loved to own one. Ergonomics and performance were about the same as my 64 Triumph, but with better reliability and superior brakes. But I've always been in love with Triumphs.
Favorite sandwich: French Dip. Roast beef on French bread with au jus for the sauce. "Lampoon" is satirical parody. "National Lampoon" was a comedic magazine.
There are sequels to this one! National Lamppon's European Vacation is pretty rubbish but does have Eric Idle in a small role. Christmas Vacation is hilarious!!! And Vegas Vacation pretty much sucks too, but I watched it several times because I thought that Marisol Nichols that played the dauhter in that movie was sooooo hot!! (not compared to you, though. ;D) Funny thing, each movie have different actors for both the kids.... My favourite sandwich would be white bread, like a soft pain riche or such, with ham, lettuce, cucumber..... paprika? Peppers? Paprika. And.... yeah, maybe that's enough? No cheese, thank you. Or perhaps one with meatballs and that red beet gushy smush, whatever it's called in british. Yum yum!!! Thanks for uploading! Greetings from Sweden
Disagree ! I love European Vacation. Perhaps being a Brit makes a difference as there are quite a few familiar faces - one in particular - that Dawn should spot.
National Lampoon was a magazine that featured Douglas Kenney, Henry Beard and Robert Hoffman. Kenney was the primary creator, and a Harvard alumini, so it was named after the Havard Lamppon. (To lampoon something was to make fun of it). Kenney was a comedic genius, and they eventually started a Radio show with what became the original Saturday Night Live cast of "Not Ready For Prime Time Players" including Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Dan Ackroyd, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, Larriane Newman, and eventually Bill Murray. They became so popular, they branched out into movies, with Animal House starring Belushi. This was Chase's first. Imogene Coca, who played Aunt Edna, was (as Tom Stanziola stated) was a regular on "Your Show Of Shows" with Sid Caesar. The writing staff included Mel Brooks, Buck Henry, Carl Reiner, Neil Simon and Woody Allen amongst others. The little "french-kissing" cousin was played by Jane Krakowski who later appeared in Ally McBeal & 30 Rock, as is quite the singer dancer. The blonde in the car is Christy Brinkley, a top model at the time, and eventual wife of Billy Joel. (She was the "Uptown Girl" that he wrote the song about). The later "Vacation" films have other actors playing the children, but they're very funny too. Wally World was filmed at Six Flags in Valencia, California. My High School Grad Night was held there in 1971 before it was even open to the public, parts were still under construction. Okay, sandwiches ... there are many, but I do love a good tuna sandwich with mayo, lettuce, celery & sweet pickles on 12 grain bread with a bowl of tomato soup. It goes back to my mother making it for me when I was a kid. Yeah, I know it sounds terrible, but I love it!
The car running after turned off... was a real thing. My dad bought my mom an early 80s Dodge station wagon and it would run for 10 to 20 seconds after shut off and it sounded exactly like the one in the movie. She hated that car and complained about it for decades.😅
My car from the late 90s will sometimes make noise for 10 seconds after turning off the engine, too. It's not a puttering like in the movie, though, but a sound like a vacuum cleaner. I think that it's the radiator cooling off the engine and happens only on the hottest of days. The first few times that it happened, I had the same reaction as Mrs. Griswold: "Why is the car still running?"😂
I was 8 years old when this movie came out. I've been to, or lived in, every city in the opening montage. Heck, the dinosaurs are located just outside my home town. The end of the film was shot at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California. So yes, it's a very real place 😃
Originally the ending was way different. They still arrived at the park being closed, buying the gun, but then they went to Wally's home. There was a party going on there, and Clark takes hostages. The cops also get involved, but then Ferrari girl arrives and turns out to be Wally's daughter. She then asked dad Wally to drop the charges. This was all filmed but scrapped and the park reshoot was done with Candy. Ferrari girl then sort of went to be a loss to the story.
I did NOT know that. I always liked what they did with Ferrari girl (Christie Brinkley) cause Clark got to be with her, got caught, and his wife forgave him and they made up. The original ending just sounds bad but I would've liked to have seen it.
27:17 the man who portrays Roy Walley is Eddie Bracken. He was the toy store owner, Mr. Duncan, in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. He gave Kevin the turtle doves.
I don't particularly like this movie, but I LOVE IT when seeing your reactions and commentary!!! Well done as always, Dawn! Always guaranteed to put a smile on my face!!!! (No, it is not a real place but a straight on spoof of Disney. To me, the best is "Mr. Walley" who is a dead ringer for Walt Disney.
