I love the blue! 'course I'm partial. I started reno a couple years ago and tried the gray walls. Hated EVRRY swatch. My kid picked out a green/blue for his room. Out of desperation I tried it and it worked perfectly in the living room. Never looked back.
Wellness rooms and traditional are trends I am happy about. I would also include music rooms, but I think these could be combined with a wellness room and be multifunctional as homes are getting smaller for the average American anyway. Elsewhere I am pretty sure housing costs have skyrocketed too so I believe they have smaller spaces too... Personally I love pulling out the old vinyl records every now and then... They do have wonderful sound and kicking back with some music a few drinks and friends is nice... 😊 Happy for you that your Art Deco is on trend again... Happy New Year's!! 😊🍾🎉
I've always loved arches, nature inspired decor, Art Deco and Art Nouveau! I find they are classics and they've stood the test of time! I loooove your channel and wishing you a Happy New Year filled with blessings and good health.🌟🎄🌟
So fun fact, the condo association where I live ripped out a bunch of beautiful old massive trees becauseeee..... The trees were out of style and they needed to plant new ones. The landscaping company was run by someone's cousin it turns out. It was really disgusting to witness. They also tore out hydrangeas and planted.... hydrangeas. -_-
One more trend for us "older" kids. "Aging in place." Curbless showers, grab bars, counter-height toilets, non-slip everything, etc. Happy New Year, Nick!
"No one has ever walked into a forest and said 'This place is really dated.' " Priceless. Happy New Year and congratulations on almost 400000 subscribers!
It's interesting, however, how traditional landscape art has been seen as so dated. Even when you see restored vintage homes, the art on the wall is always abstract--not a forest in sight.
I think the 'listening room' and 'wellness room' are just new names for that one room that is an extra. Den, library, computer room (not that long ago), media room, gaming room, gym, it's that one room that's switched out according to the family's current needs. They just came up with more interesting labels for them.
I get the thought process behind it. My “rich-rich” fantasy is to have one room in my house that I can throw design to the wind and make a hockey room. Giant TV, team colors, comfy seating, tons of memorabilia… in my minds eye it’s hideously tacky and I’d love every inch of it. But while I live in an apartment, I’ll settle for jerseys in the closet. 😂
I just made a similar comment but I think they're way more than that "one extra room" and instead they're sanity spaces. They're more than the den or rec room or man cave or she shed. They're purpose built and well-appointed within the budget. They may be a whole room but they may also be a niche carved from a larger room. It's all about balance and boundaries in all aspects of life.
@@paigeturner1124 carve out a niche. Display some jerseys like you would kimono and call them art. If it makes you smile and happy to be in the space... go for it!
Listening rooms are what people had back in Victorian times and turn of the century, before television was invented, so it is nothing new, and like you said it can be any spare room that you use for any specific activity, that you give its own name.
I’m a kitchen and bath designer and I completely agree about the black countertops. They show EVERYTHING including eyeball prints from just looking at them! 🙅🏻♀️
I think the biggest “trend”that is coming in with everyone understanding the importance of their homes atmosphere - is not doing what’s trending and just picking colours and items that they genuinely love and creating their safe space. People are aiming to enjoy their spaces as theirs again I think
I agree! I impulse bought some satin green curtains with gold leaf print and I good-naturedly bullied my mom outta her latest secondhand shop treasure.. a old, dark red turkish rug. They are going to look amazing and bold together, along with a pair of gold art deco magpie lamps I can't live without.
I feel like it’s because trends come & go so quickly & a kitchen is the most expensive room in our homes. I am redoing mine now. I have always loved a white kitchen & I don’t care if it’s not trending.
My mom has a speckled grey granite countertop. You would not believe the crumbs and sticky messes that are hidden by the visual texture 😅 Some of these trending granites are more reflective whether they're white or black or just have more solid color areas which expose any dirtiness. I'm never visually prompted to clean my mom's counter, but am always scrubbing my white countertops!
I think "listening room" translates into "a place in the house without a loud and distracting TV." I am sure many people got tired of their open concept homes where one oversized, loud TV dominated that entire space leaving only bedrooms as a respite location.
I'm glad traditional is coming back. For me, it never left. We bought a house in 2021 and I've been working on designing it in a more traditional style this whole time. I find it comforting. It reminds me of my childhood.
"No one has ever walked into a forest and said: this place is really dated" 😂🤣😂😂, you just gave me a big much needed laugh, thank you for it, I love you 😍 and your work! Happy New Year!
I just bought a house with a “piano” room for my grand piano. I do play piano and got tired of having the piano in the open concept living area. Practicing piano is best done out of the main living room.
I love dark and moody. I've been waiting for it to trend for years. I was so sick of seeing the white/natural wood look that everyone had. I love the black, charcoal, deep eggplant and green colors. Art Deco is beautiful and I love it in accent pieces like a beautiful wallpaper or a piece of furniture.
Same! I have white cabinets but a lot of darker greys, sage/olive, silvers, but I keep it dark. We never open the curtains so it doesn’t have that same vibe as all of these other bright white rooms. BUT, I have decided to bring in a lot of black- adding in black fixtures, and some other other pieces. I think it’ll be a good mix. We have a few black walls here and there as well, which I’m glad that black walls have been “in”!
When you talked about the all white on white Salt Lake City kitchen with all of your blonde children😆 This is beyond accurate!! I've lived in SLC for 43 years, nail on the head! Your sense of humor is as good as your design advise❤
“This forest looks dated” 🤣. Good one! We moved to Hawaii this year and our walls all open up to the outside. We even shower outdoors. Jokingly we say we purchased a roof. I still have trees and plants inside. Can’t get enough nature. Add in 180 degree ocean views, hard to be in a bad mood.
I think the listening room thought should have been listed as an example of what I've been calling "sanity spaces". That could be a listening room, a craft room, a library room... or a niche carved out of a larger space dedicated to the hobby you love most that brings you inner peace. So that could also be a home gym or a gaming space. And for many I know, its a solarium/3 seasons porch where they house many of their houseplants and enjoy taking care of them. I think one of the major things the pandemic and most importantly, the lockdown, is that its important to have balance and boundaries and part of that is making sure you can dedicate time to doing what you love, not just what you do to earn money (even if you love your job). There's definitely a shift away from "man caves" and "she sheds" to hobby dedicated spaces where you can pursue something that fills your soul and makes your brain happy. In the same vein, I think this is why we're seeing so many bathroom and kitchen renovations as those who enjoy cooking/baking or pampering themselves as their sanity saver want spaces they truly enjoy and function well too.
agreed ! I have a space dedicated to my morning routine carved out of my bedroom- my vanity . it now holds a vintage counter sitting hair dryer and a organized makeup and hair stuff so I don't feel stressed by sharing a bathroom with my family of 4 including myself to get ready in
I love the concept of a “sanity space”! I’m currently trying to design my own book-reading sanity space by creating a cozy little cove of bookshelves and beanbag chairs in my living room, and now I know what to call it!
I am SO happy that Art Deco is making a comeback.I have always been drawn to the graphic curves of Art Deco.I remember watching Hucule Peroit on TV just to see those interiors.
I'm so glad art deco is trending. I've always loved it, so for me, it means I now have access to things in my preferred style. (I also like to mix it with the simplicity of MCM, but lord knows that's easy to fine.)
I think you make a great point there: trends being responsible for more elements of a certain style being for sale and also available at more affordable prices! I can‘t count the times I wanted to buy a specific piece of clothing but it just wasn‘t available cause it wasn‘t on trend right then 🙄 it‘s really not that different when it comes to interior design at all 🤷🏼♀️
I find we go from "solid" trend to "NEUTRAL and BACK again and AM happy to see "modern take on art deco" I personally love the shapes and material choices of the period
My parents had a "sun room" when I was young. It had two walls of paned windows. It was used for a den, a bedroom, a playroom, and an overly large Christmas tree ( massive bush) room. Wish I had a room like that when my kids were growing up.
Moody and Art Deco go hand in hand, and I’m so here for it. And yes, Nick, you called it 😂 Edit: Black countertops are a step up from tile countertops, only slightly less gross as you really see EVERYTHING on them. But less likely to hold germs and mold than tile.
I think it depends on the finish. I have had black counters for about 3 years and have no trouble with them. No more maintenance than any other countertop.
My last home had brown manufactured stone counter tops. I could see crumbs easily so I knew it was clean when I couldn’t see (or feel) them anymore. Somehow the light showed up everything. My present home had dark brown stone patterned laminate counter tops. I could not see crumbs, dirt but I could always feel it. I was constantly wiping down those counter tops. I soon changed it out for quartz look manufactured stone.
I love your “you do you” attitude. Yes I like to look at updated stuff especially when I am making major changes. But there is something to be said about having a home that is filled with stuff you love. I am working toward that and then will work on curating in new small trends that appeal to me.
I painted my apartment turquoise blue in 2010 and I still love it. When people come in, the shock quickly wears off and invariably they say they feel uplifted which is what I want to feel in my home - uplifted and inspired. Blue for me will never go out of style, including the bold blue you featured. The biophilic trend I love - you can never have too many plants or too many planters, IMO. Dark moody interiors have long been a favourite of mine. I remember seeing a photo of a black room for the first time in 2003 and thinking that as much as I loved it, people would not cotton to it but they did and I'm happy about that. Black countertops are like glossy black floors - beautiful and glamorous bu only if you have the resources to have someone clean them for you on a weekly basis. Recently I have seen textured walls in a different context than you discussed and loved it! It is more like an art installation. Today I saw photos of flowering dogwood branches styled like Chinoiserie as texture on a wall. Gorgeous! I want it! I do love that textured walls are becoming much more creative than just the troweling of plaster. I hope we see more of what I am seeing in textured walls. Thanks Nick, I enjoyed this video very much! Happy New Year!
I freakin love art deco. Art deco, the arts and crafts movement, mission style, and yes, mid century modern. When was art deco not in? It's so Jeeves and Wooster (see Brit series with Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry -gorgeous)
Here's what I think the trend should be - Decorate your home with what YOU love. Make it pretty and comfy for you and your family needs. I like a mixture of styles but not off the hook. I like wood and fabric and antiques and color but not heavy, light and cozy. If you do what you love, that's the best.
Art Deco has been a trend in the UK since 2020 (at least). Series 2 of Interior Design Masters had a contestant - Siobhan - who's home was a 1930s original, and she'd kitted it out in a glamorous, maximalist art deco style. The show was on air in early 2021, and filmed during the latter half of 2020 - her style wasn't presented as being eccentric or niche, so I think it was pretty firmly already a part of UK trends by then.
Am I the only person who is not that into interior trends but in to find something you will still like in 20 or 30 years? 😅I have just realised that I try to create the living room of my grandparents because this was such a nice warm and cosy mid century elegance With lots of texture and warm wood tones and lots of greenery and plants ….and I think this just happened by accident because my grandparents wasn’t into interior design at all….
Without trends there wouldn't be many interior design videos to watch. I'm interested in the same way I'm interested in any other design vid not in an imma go buy that way
@@Nick_Lewismaybe you can do a five year look back or something to see what has stuck? That’s a bit of work, but it would be interesting to see what trends rose to the top.
I think trends are fun to watch to maybe be inspired for new ideas, but I'm a firm believer in creating a space that is right for you. I've personally started watching Nick's channel because my wife and I are hoping to move in the not-so-distant future, and while we'd bring most of our own stuff with us, because we like it, we're not looking to just recreate what we already have. And I would say that people have been interior designing before people were calling it interior design. Much of the time it was more of the, I like what I know and know what I like "trend". Which it still pretty much is for most people. The social "elite" have the money to hire designers to find styles that they like that will also make an impression on those who come to their homes. And in the last 60-70 years there's been a growing trend for the rest of us to try to emulate that. (See Nick when he talks "pricepoints") So much of society is worried about the keeping up with the Jones', and picking apart everyone who isn't up-to-date with design, cars, tech, etc; sometimes it can seem like people are more worried about that than being happy and comfortable with what they have. Sorry this became more of a tirade. But something I've heard Nick speak to often is to make your space about you. You want that mid-century mixed with traditional mixed with farmhouse mixed with glam? Than do it, if others don't like it, too bad for them, you're the one who has to live there!
Dark kitchen countertops ... my fantasy countertop is soapstone, the type you see in university chem labs. Yes, it's dark, yes, it shows crumbs and stains - but it's intended to look well used, not pristine. To my taste, a few stains adds to the look. I would not go with dark glossy countertops; they're as bad as shiny white. Years back, when concrete counters were a new trend, I saw one d-i-y project where the concrete was finished by using coffee as a surface stain (like wood stain). The final color was quite nice, and spilled coffee was no problem. 😄 ☕
I like the way you think. I used white quartz with a bit of gray veining on my kitchen and I love it, but I too have fantasized about soapstone on my kitchen. It’s gorgeous and ages very well. 😍
I definitely think traditional is coming back but it’s colliding with the neutral palettes that have been popular over recent years. For example, white/light walls paired with antique woods, traditional rugs with subdued patterns, neutral textiles, plants.
0:36 I’ve had a “listening room” in my home for 8 years. We call it the lounge. Really it’s just a bedroom on the 2nd floor with all of our records, a sofa, and some chairs on one side, desk on opposite wall. We use it as a wfh office, listening room, smoking room, and cocktail spot. Some formal living rooms/parlors serve the same purpose. I think the main theme is that there is no tv. Your media is music.
I get what you mean but have you tried ? it’s a nightmare, if you let a little (clean) water dry on it, you can see it, everything shows up, you basically have to clean with a fiber cloth ever time you use the sink 😭
Fine, you can do that. However, I don't always have time to clean off every crumb the minute it hits a black countertop and dust a dark wood floor every day of the week.
I recently moved into a house with black granite counters that have a glittery/sparkly effect, which is the worst of both worlds. The glitter disguises crumbs and bits of food so it's hard to know where to clean, but it also sometimes looks like crumbs itself. So it's either messy and you don't know it, or not messy but feels like it is.
Love the clock behind you. It was at 3:o'clock when you started. Five min later, it was 4. Five minutes later, it's 5pm. And now 6pm.... You put lots of time into your excellent video. Thanks.
I guess by total happenstance I'm trendy 😀 I inherited my childhood home that was built in 1940. And all the furniture. I have plaster walls because that's what they did in 1940. I have a lovely arch between living room and dining room. Lots of traditional mahogany furniture and guest bedroom and Florida room with mid century modern furniture. Some marble mostly on furniture and whatever you call the things on the floor under doors (?). I'm mixing my modern taste with the traditional. I'm loving all of it and I'm incredibly grateful.
Listening room tend to be for people that have discovered vinyl, reel to reel and surround systems. They are also multi purpose rooms, think yoga, physical fitness, reading, etc... Moody spaces really work well for bed rooms, media rooms, "listening rooms" lol. Art Deco is my favorite design style. I have used Art Deco in commercial spaces for years and people are always surprised when they like it.
Hey Nick, I’m with you on listening rooms. That’s something that people who are not musicians. We built on top of our home 27 years ago to relocate a recording studio and a teaching studio so we could put ourselves in lockdown working and living in the one space. This was so we could be with our daughters through the hectic growing years. Best thing we ever did. The recording space was never used to listen to music. By the time our day was one we could hardly wait to get down stairs to the quiet. Gentle music, classical, that didn’t relate to Film and Screen was played, rarely. We had a peaceful home the girls new there were rules. No running, steaming or crying upstairs. Yes they learned self control and how you didn’t have to blast the neighbours in order to LISTEN to your favourite bands. Our friends son has a listening room and we politely sat there after lunch listening to music, at volume. I think he thought we’d be impressed. We could hardly wait to get out of there 😂 As you say if it’s your thing, do it. Just not near me!!!!! PLEASE 😊
I love a lot of people’s styles, but I have my own that makes me feel good! I think it’s about loving all kinds of styles & personalities, but do you☺️ I love getting different ideas ❤️
@@Nick_Lewis If you get the chance to venture south, check out downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma. Gorgeous art deco everywhere built by the oil barons in the 1920's & '30's.
Gotta say, I’ve not regretted our black soapstone countertops one bit since we renovated 6 1/2 years ago. It has some beautiful dark green and gray veining. It does show crumbs, but I like cleaning, so…
I come from an Indian household and as much as I wanted to get a white countertop for my recent kitchen reno, I finally chose a jet black granite..why..cuz we use turmeric, curry powder, lots of spices in our food and chances of them staining a light colored countertop no matter what the material is really high..sure black shows dust n crumbs more easily but it's just a matter of cleaning more and it's clean again versus a light colored countertop that overtime starts looking dingy and dull and stained and spotted and discolored, there's no amount of frequent cleaning that will remedy that
I have a music room. I think it's supposed to be a "formal living room" but it didn't make any sense to use it like that. So we put a nice stereo and a piano and guitars in there and it came out really cool. It's a functional room that we actually used instead of just another place to sit.
The problem with trends is that designers come up with new ideas each year and if you follow trends instead of finding out what YOU like, you'll be chasing other's ideas forever. Costly mistake. Look and listen, then decide what works for you for the long haul and ignore the trends.
its interesting to see the cultural difference affecting the counter top color choice. in Asia most of my clients got black hair and soy sauce is the main cooking staple condiment (and get spilled often) so a darker counter top is always considered to hide the mess better.
Well, it's nice to know that -- keep out-dated decor long enough -- it comes back in style: Arches! Unfortunately, that's just one item on a long list of built-in oddities in my living space. I'm waiting 😎.
The wood furniture with round edges is good for families who have small children and would possibly be good for me. I’m always bumping into stuff, just careless and rushing around. Thank Nick. Xx
I designed a beauty room. It has 2 vanities, a loveseat, a nice chair, and a flat-screen, a dresser, shelves and a couple small side tables. It's sooooo relaxing, and pretty.
I just installed a dark countertop. My kitchen has a white and grey quartz but I have a drop down eating area with a waterfall edge that is Italian basalt. I LOVE it. :)
Art Deco!! Yes yes yes!! I was born in 1950 and grew up uncomfortable with the avocado green/burnt orange shag rug macramé scheme of things. I drooled over the decor in the film noir movies; smooth lines, geometrics, neutral toned, dramatic accents! You are so cute and fun to watch. Looking forward to 2023
Terrific video Nick. It's always nice getting a new video show up from you. I decorated my new home with your advice in mind in the last couple months and we just finished it up. :) It came out great!
Oh yes! Also, people are socializing and playing online games where they are talking and laughing. The other housemates don’t necessarily want to hear that.
Hi Nick! The reason I enjoy watching your videos is that you have a common sense, mature (don't read old) style about you that really resonates with me. I think you are practical while still loving and promoting beautiful spaces and we need more of that! Loving your content, opinions and POV. Keep the videos coming! Happy 2023 to you!
I don't know why I feel the need to comment on each and every thing but apparently I need someone to talk to. I think arches are very pretty. We have one in our living room, original to the house, 2nd gothic revivaly style, built in the 1860s. The curves are nice as homes are generally rather boxy. Not sure I want them for every single doorway. They can also be quaint, like a hobbit door or a mouse hole.
I think I discovered your channel though the art déco video, and I think that video really open my eyes to my admiration to this type of design and now I am art déco advocate:) I love the colors, the shapes, the boldness. The time period, the people that lived during that era, the art. It’s just great.
I often approach these type of “design opinion” videos with gritted teeth, yet you, Nick, are spot on and humble in controversial concepts. Always worth the watch! Happy 2023!!🎉
And "mommy blogger Salt Lake City" was my favorite part! Especially because I'm from Utah and that was spot on 😂😂😂😂 Thanks for the shout out to the Utards! 😂
Totally agree on the black countertops. We moved into a house with black leathered granite 3 years ago and hate it. Impossible to keep tidy. Not into the dark, moody walls. With a heavily wooded lot, it's hard to get any sunlight in my house, so not into the dark, cave look. Sophisticated traditional is a look I can appreciate.
My condo has very little natural light.. so while my husband would LOVE the entire place to be a combination of white, black and grey, I can't have it, because of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). I want to hibernate through winter badly enough as it is, but with a dark surrounding, I would be hibernating, because of all the darkness.
I think the listening room is for all the people that have started collecting vinyl records again, I have so many friends that have taken up this hobby in the last few years. A place to store it all that's more intentional than hidden away would be great if you have the space. I like the idea of a quiet nook to listen to music, read or meditate that is beautifully decorated.
I like the idea (in a house with enough room) of having a quiet room with additional sound insulation for a combined library/listening space/study. I certainly don't need individual spaces for these activities, but I think combining spaces that either require protection from outside sounds or make sounds that the rest of the house needs some isolation from makes sense.
I like the fact that the colours, finishes and furnishings I picked out four years ago for our new build are suddenly on trend. Happy New Year, Nick. Hope your construction continues apace in 2023.
20 years ago I was into beige and brown than I went to greys. Currently I have a mix of thes tonese with my favorite colors muted and it all seems to work well.
Regarding the first item on the list, "listening room." We are reno-ing our house and we've turning one bedroom around so that there's a door from the living room. We are transforming this space into a "media room." It will be a space dedicated to all forms of entertainment, including a small music studio (my husband is a professional guitarist who's main hobby is doing entire remakes of classic rock tunes, including all the instrumental parts), plus video games, movie watching, etc. The living room-dining off a new and improved kitchen will be for more formal entertaining. So maybe not just listening, but more secluded media entertaining.
Plaster is timeless - I keep repeating to myself as every sq inch of my home is treated in different plaster as a result of the previous homeowner and can’t bring myself to change it 😅
Plaster is timeless. What might not be is the application method used in that case, but even that can be made to look beautiful with the correct styling of the space.
@@karenryder6317 Yes Venetian is another technique. I mean regular walls done by hand with plaster decorative applications. Those can look good too. My walls have texture applied on them and some are thick plaster and they look fabulous with the paint and sheen I chose. They don't look dated at all.
Whatever happened to a stereo system that you could listen throughout your house? Especially with all the smart gadgets you could turn off speakers in one room and leave another room on. Is it necessary to just sit there and listen unless in fact, you are a musician. Then there's the headphones but, it's not the same thing to an old person like myself. Sounds great but there's something about the music You Love dancing through the house as you clean or cook Etc
I love Art Deco and nature-inspired decor. I am eclectic and do not go "trendy" because it can get expensive as you pointed out. I change my wall art and accessories because I shop at thrift stores, flea markets, and antique stores. I have a storage area of things I love and want to keep. When I get tired of looking at the art and accessories, I go to my storage.
I know several people who have listening rooms. Big, expensive stereo systems, leather chairs facing the speakers, and thick rugs. Two people I know used a spare bedroom for a listening room, and one used his dining room.
Got to say I love traditional although my first love is Victorian. I think traditional allows you to have those keepsakes that means so much that so many people just toss because they're not on trend. To me, and this is personal, when I see my mother's dishware or my grandmother's silver it gives me a feeling of warmth and home. Everything my father ever fixed in my home does the same thing and it's not decor! We don't appreciate all they do and all they were until they're gone. Even if we think we do. There's so much more to each person in our lives and so much more when we inherit their Treasures and learn more about what they loved.
I agree with you! So many people buy cheap crap "decor" because it's on trend while tossing out all the precious things they inherited from family, and their homes end up like hotel rooms: bland, colorless, and boring.
@@idalily3810 you're so right and it drives me crazy too! On top of that everybody has a home that looks the same. Well, a lot of people. For example this Farmhouse BS is gone crazy simply because of Chip and Joanna Gaines! Nobody even knew what shiplap was before she started yapping about how much she loved it. At least she was interested in authentic items however now she sells fake chippy paint items to the masses. I don't mean to sound critical I just see these transitional homes full of Farmhouse items and signage. Drives me nuts but if that's what people like they should have it and enjoy it. You and I can go to the Goodwill and get there families heirlooms lol!
@@vlrissolo The signage! OMG. Who needs a sign that says "Gather" in the dining room? Or a sign in the bathroom that tells you to wash your hands and brush your teeth? Or--the worst of all-- a sign in the laundry room that says, "Laundry." Well, no kidding. The big huge washer and dryer were a pretty good clue. LOL.
I have my house and six cats. I’m 73 years old now. I love all kinds of music. My whole house is my music room. I don’t have a TV. I have an iPad. Upon which I am watching you Nick. Love it. Love you. I don’t need to have a special room into the Who,e. Damn. House. Yep. Love it.
You are spot on with the Venetian plaster trend. I also agree with the other things except the soapstone/blackish countertops. I think those are going to be around as long as marble countertops are front and center. They are difficult to maintain, however.
Hi Nick, love your videos! I think you invented the name of a colour at 14:28: Vouge! I imagine it in the red/purple part of the spectrum, very rich and glamourous :)
RUN from black countertops. I have white and regretted them from the second after installation. Specks of dust sense when you've cleaned and drift into the surface to mock you. Dark or light counters are 100% aggravation.
Dark jewel tones are very pretty but I cannot see that trend lasting. In the winter, a dark space can seem very cozy but in the summer, it's just going to feel heavy and hot. As a social worker I used to go into a lot of people's homes and this one lady had an eggplant colored bedroom with very heavy floral curtains and a way too big poofy bed and it looked hideous. She told me she wanted to paint the walls a different color, and I suggested yellow (my favorite color for any wall - happy and cheerful) and she looked at me like I was insane. And I thought, who's the insane one bitch who made her bedroom look disgusting?!
Yes to textured walls! Had my kitchen replastered by a pro, painted white and wow looks like a new home super Clean. I like Big rooms and Hate dark colored walls that make rooms smaller.
I agree with nature being represented inside, but “bringing” the outside in; all I think is “The bugs!!, the bugs!!”. Nick, your “Blond children” remark, brought in my new year with a laugh! Happy New Year!
When I was a kid our living room was the TV room and the dining room was the "listening room" - that's where the hifi was and where we did our homework.
loved this video and I basically agree with everything ! I just renovated my appartement and I’m really happy with the result EXCEPT the black granite counter top, which is a nightmare. also as a European, the concept of a « listening room » is hilarious … I know houses are big in the US but come on 😅
WIERD as a LOT of Listening rooms AND HIGH END equipment is IN EUROPE BUT do agree that likely it will be America OR ASIA where it becomes for the "common person"
also the apartment in Germany HAD a "loft" space that was intended for storage BUT could be a SMALL listening space and I have NEVER seen a loft be included in an AMERICAN apartment
I’m thinking of a listening room. Thinking of making a moody formal living room where I will put the piano there. Adding dark bookshelves, accent chairs where one can sip on whisky while listening or reading .
I've had blue pearl granite countertops for 14 years. It's not been my experience to see dirt/food/schmutz more easily, at least not any more or less than any countertop I've had before. I'm always curious why dark countertops feel worse to some. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Happy to see my blue walls. white cabinets, and dark countertop are coming back around :D
I think it is all about how you keep your kitchen. I have a customer with a black granite countertop and it is never really that dirty or even looks dirty.
@@vaderladyl Yes, that's true. I was raised in a house (and worked in restaurants) where the saying was "If you have time to lean, you have time to clean." :) Once I discovered those sponge cloth things I never looked back. They keep any type of surface sparkling.
I have to watch a second time because I know I miss some humor...eg, the white light Salt Lake trend with light everything including blond children. Bahaha! Love it. Yeah, and your design commentary too, but don't underestimate the value of witty asides. :)
