What a great episode. Peter did a nice job to be neutral and respectful, as all the others who visit the community seem to have a pre-planned agenda. Sam - You are a natural in front of the camera. Melissa - The screen isn’t big enough to show the compassion you have for people; it definitely shows. Great job, and kudos to those who work with people who need such services.

Regarding the example of Hannah in the Bible…. Hannah chose this for her child - she made a promise to God. She decided when (when he was weaned) and did so out of gratitude to the Lord for answering her prayer to conceive and have a child. She was barren for so long and deeply desired to have a child. People didn’t come into her home and take her son in secret. For the flds to use this as a biblical reason to how they view child/parental relationships is evidence that they really do not know scripture. It’s easy to take a passage and twist it to say what we want it to say, but that’s not right. ❤

It is tragic how so many religions through out history manipulate, whether it is through "sacred text" or "prophecy" to control other people.

This is not the problem just in FLDS but many traditional Christian groups as well. I red my bible many times, when I was younger and I have good memory, and so often I think this is out of context. Like somebody using the story of Tamar against masturbation, when it was about injustice against women and your dead brother’s or son’s wife in particular. Injustice killed the brother-in-law, not the masturbation. He did not even masturbate in the story; he withdrew from her. There are other much more common and as such more controversial interpretations, that are clearly cherry picked and made to mean something that they actually don't in the wider context of the Bible book they're from, but I don't go to them because there is no point of fighting about religion and it would possibly lead to that with some commenters.

I watched the episode when it came out and this and loved them both. I find Sam’s take on the “situation” of the FLDS to be so interesting and enlightening as the only other people who have come out with videos have been severely affected in a negative way. I love Sam’s honesty and appreciation but awareness of his childhood. Him speaking of his mother honestly broke my heart though. I will forever be putting out vibes and prayers for them to be reunited. I hope she watches these and sees how very much her son loves her and recognizes and respects the mother she was to him, his siblings, his “extra” siblings and what a wonderful man, father, husband and human her son has turned out to be. I am sure she would adore Melissa’s sweet soul if she met her and be so happy her boy is living in non sin 😂 in love and with a beautiful wife inside and out who’s the mother of her grandkids. I have watched Peter’s other videos and he has a similar attitude as Sam, open, non judgmental, genuinely interested and empathetic. I have been binging his videos and loving them! Fantastic collab! (Apologies for my book! 🤦🏻‍♀️) Also - please do a live soon!!! After 5pm so I can not be at work! Atop horses + live doesn’t usually go well! 😂

It was great to have Peter S. join both of you. I'm grateful that the risks to people who are NOT in power, were explained a little more. I know that Sam seemed to have a good dad and pretty stable home in the era before more MONSTROUS abuses became normalized. He also didn't have to live with a girl's daily fear of being married off to some old man as soon as she reached the age of 13!!

Listening to Gladys speak so well of her sister wives, makes me think that for some, sister wives are the replacement of companionship and life partner, that a husband normally is. If the husband is often absent, either due to rigid gender roles (won’t help with household chores or child rearing because it is the woman’s job, etc…) or being too busy working full-time jobs as well as having multiple families and too many children, it would be a very lonely existence for the wives if they were all alone. So when sister wives got along, I can see that it could be like living with your best friends….companionship, emotional support, help with the day to day, et al…. And yes, a lot easier if you’re not “in love” with your husband, so less jealousy.

Hi Sam and Melissa I'm new to your channel and I really like your comment about anyone being in a high demand religion and getting out of that religion. I used to be a Jehovah Witness and getting out I had so much of my time freed up that was not being taken up by religious activities it's like you have to retrain your brain on what to do and on how you think on things. And the one thing that I wanted to comment on like for Sam or others I did not get out because I did not believe in the bible or God anymore, I got out because of non religious reasons but your life is so much of that religious belief that it kinda becomes a religious reason why your out.. i am enjoying learning about this topic thank you for sharing even the hard intimate things so thank you

Re the Law of Consecration: Y’all just made something that has been bothering my family make sense! I have a cousin that married a (mainstream) Mormon guy and she converted to LDS. Her husband doesn’t work much, he just tutors kids in music every so often. My cousin works, but it’s not enough for them to live on and my cousin is constantly “borrowing” money from her mom. Whenever someone suggests to her husband that he help out and get a full time job, he claims that because they pay a certain amount in tithes every month, the Church is supposed to “take care” of them. He says the Church is supposed to find them a place to live, pay their rent, and give them money for food. And he’s frustrated because the Church in his area isn’t living up to this and the members of the church claim that he’s supposed to provide for his wife. He thinks this is Grade A bologna because the Book of Mormon (or Doctrine & Covenants?) says the Church is supposed to take care of _him_ . Most of my family is some variety of evangelical Protestant (and I’m not religious at all) so they’re completely baffled by this man’s behavior and since we are in an area with _very_ few Mormons, for most of my family members this is their first encounter with a Mormon and they’re starting to assume that all Mormons are like him. I couldn’t figure out where he got this idea, and when I asked my LDS friends, they were just as confused as me. I’m so glad that you’ve cleared this up for me! I can’t wait to explain it to my dad.
@sleepycalico
@sleepycalico 7 месяцев назад
But it is the FLDS that does this communal sharing of food thing, not the regular LDS. So your cousin's husband is still talking nonsense. The regular LDS does maintain some supplies for people who are down on their luck, but they do not have a policy to support lay-abouts. I've heard they are even miserly about providing support for people who are in unavoidable need, because the church expects people to be self-supporting and is cautious not to be taken advantage of. Sheesh. If mainstream LDS wanted to grow its membership, it could offer to support people who would rather not work. I bet a lot of people would take that deal. Never going to happen, though. (shaking my head at your cousin's husband's sense of entitlement)

Hey guys! I was hoping you would react to your video because there are plenty of hole’s to fill. You will probably recall moments where you wanted to add more context to. A topic/subject like this is definitely a good one for this type of reaction video. I would really consider breaking these up into 2 or 3 parts. This will also take some pressure away to allow deeper thoughts and possibly longer commentary. Thanks again for another great video! Merry Christmas!🎄🎁

A pair of morman missionaries lived in an apartment where I worked. We called them "the sisters". The local LDS Church rented the apartment and every few months a new pair of sisters would move in. The residents got so used to them being there that it became a common thing to kind of look after them. They were so young and green to the world usually no older than 20yo. They would give me cookies and cupcakes they would bake and were always so friendly and upbeat.

Curious how the different factions can continue to believe in the religion when things change on a whim.

My great Uncle was a Catholic missionary and "drowned" while he somewhere in South America. My grandpa told me that he was was murdered by a tribe he was trying to convert - I wonder if missionaries being/drowned murdered was very common hence the "the devil controls the water"

I just found your channel and find it very interesting . I left the mainstream LDS 13 years ago. I have a question.. Did Warren Jeffs use D&C 132 the new and everlasting covenant to justify polygamy? I remember a temple worker trying to explain it to me while in the temple. Do you think the mainstream LDS still practice polygamy in a way since after their wife dies they can be sealed to another? Even though it’s not polygamy in the physical world, but it still is in the afterlife .
