I know it's not a single but the song "don't go outside" is possibly my favorite on that album, the bizarre folk meets dystopian nightmare bit is shockingly gorgeous...
@@ChaseCarneson Your reaction in this video, with the "Oh, I'm a fan aren't I?" was exactly my reaction a few months ago when I fell down a Poppy shaped rabbit hole online. My daughter showed me a couple of her "I'm Poppy" videos, then a "Kids React To Poppy..." and then I found her music. The earlier stuff was kinda straight up bubblegum pop, but when she went metal I was lost. Its almost like my brain was disappointed with the rest of me, but screw it. I like Poppy.
I love your reactions, man! I'm a metalhead but I love Poppy, she''s just unique in my opinion. You're doing great by listening to these songs chronologically, so you can see her progress. "Concrete" should be next! Anyway, you can pick any song from the last "I Disagree" album. It's great from start to finish. Greetings from Italy!
If you really want to go chronologically, there's still her pop songs and her "vlogs" (performance art videos) from 2014 on. I think I actually like the performance art stuff the best, then the nu metal stuff 😂 she's definitely unique!
Her song "Voicemail" is from the same EP as Scary Mask and I'd love to see your reaction to that! The screamer in this song is Jason from Fever 333. He's featured but the band playing on the record is Poppy's old backing band, the Icky Babies, aka Blame Candy. The drummer from Fever also helped compose parts of the song. I think it's so mindblowing!
Oh man. I had never even heard of her before today. I started like, fine, this is alright and "poppy". Oh, you're Baby Metal in English, alright. Wait, is that Maria from In This Moment. And then moving through those progressions again. I too think I'm a fan.
Nothing wrong with Babymetal in english. :) I mean, unless it's actual Babymetal and then i prefer it in Japanese. Poppy only has a few songs that are like this though. Most of her songs are boring pop songs all the way through. I think her next album will be entirely like this though. If not they're making a mistake. They need to get more talent around her too. I've seen videos of her performing live and it was not good. She would have been better off performing to pre-recorded music like Babymetal did at first. Much better off.
I think I might be as addicted to Poppy reaction videos as much as I am to Poppy herself. I Disagree is awesome if you're doing that next. That one was my first experience with her music back when they had her perform on WWE NXT a few times with that song and a couple other songs again later.
Chase! Thanks for that, i've never heard her her before. So satisfyingly complex and interesting. Please keep us a little off balance, and maybe sneak a few of your own choices in.
That's definitely coming up soon. I have some band I love and grew up on that have released new stuff and even some bands that I played and toured with so can't wait for that.
Poppy is coy about her agenda, but from various hints a couple of things seem clear: 1) her stuff is meant to be confusing and transgressive--she is challenging definitions and genres; 2) a lot of it is downright sarcastic--for example her posing as the prophet of a mock "religion". By the way, groups like King Crimson also mixed up sweet, mellow passages with skull-crushing brutality--this isn't that new a concept, but Poppy adds in a Japanese "kawaii" esthetic as well. I think it's really interesting.
I appreciate that you rewind a little bit after commenting. That way it doesn't disrupt the flow too much. Other react channels could take a leaf out of your book and do the same because nothing annoys me more than a pause right before a climax. I like this post genre stuff poppy is doing. Didn't care for her pop music this is much more interesting
Working my way through your feed in chronological order and this is fantastic! In your earlier reaction I noted one comment about Poppy following a similar style to Babymetal and on listening to this one I am struck by what a great observation that is is. Keep up the good work mate, love your analyses and your humour.
Just remembered the one band that offers a lot to react to. Finnish industrial metal monster Turmion Kätilöt. Band that delivers one of the greatest live shows and craziest videos :D. Mostly sings in Finnish, but have some english stuff too. One song in Finn : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RmQHWlQpDVY.html and one in english : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b9K4lPb0Gto.html .
You should absolutely react to her earlier stuff just to see how much of a departure her metal stuff is! Also watching interviews will give an insight into who she is as an artist that would be interesting to see you react to.
i love poppy. her mashing-up of genres works so well, and it’s so hard to pull off. i recommend listening to Stereolab - Double Rocker. it’s not metal, it’s 90’s alternative pop and it throws some fastballs. not as exciting as poppy, but my personal favorite band with a great body of work. a more contemporary artist i would recommend is St. Vincent. she fuses rock and pop flawlessly, i would recommend Los Ageless
OH MAN, Probably never going to see this but did you see every time i die at arcade empire? I was the guy who punched the roof and the ceiling board fell xD
Never heard of Poppy before this. Thanks for sharing the discovery! For some reason I immediately thought of SKYND. Very dark themes, but Skynd is particularly creepy because her songs are based on REAL people and events. Do you remember Jonestown and the whole "Drink the Kool-aid" meme? Whatever song you pick, look up the title on wikipedia and read the history. Chilling stuff. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MZjvGiT0fWo.html
Have you checked out the Japanese band Maximum the Hormone? Very similar juxtaposition of hyper happy pop with huge breakdowns. Some recommendations: “Kuso breakin' Nou breakin' Lily” upbeat ska vibe “Koi no Mega Lover” kinda reminds me of Metallica and hair metal “Yoshū Fukushū” brace yourself
Couldn't have said it better myself! Actually, while I have you here. Could I be a pain and ask for that link one mooore time. I'm updating my plan and seem to have lost it.
No pain at all my friend :) Again, just a fan made lyric video unfortunately. I'll try to request stuff with a better video component in the future but go figure my favorite has none! Caligula's Horse - Dream the Dead ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3Jdm_KUA3yM.html They have a new album coming out Friday, I'm so excited. It's hard for me not to ask for one of the new songs too but I have a couple other bands to get to 🤣 I'm not really gunning for multiple reactions each band unless there's support for them in the comments. If you found something you liked and listened to more in your own time that's fine by me!
Whichever you'd prefer brother 😁 Personally I really wanted you to have your mind potentially blown by Dream the Dead as my introduction (everyone's taste is different, what if you don't even like it..ohh noes lol) This music video is from the album coming out Friday. It's very different from Dream the Dead but still really solid in its own right. Caligula's Horse - Slow Violence ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bNlUJgP3Lwk.html Whichever happens I'll be happy either way, perhaps an excercise in patience never hurt lol 🧘♂️
The video looks like it´s been shot at the same location as First Aid Kits "My silver lining". Completely different genre but a good song too. Absolutely love your reactions and all your knowledge. Why not try and react to Avatar and their new song " Silance in the age of apes"? Keep up the good work
Yass! 👏🏼 Yass! 👏🏼 Yass! 👏🏼 Subscribed, will watch more. Too many people throw out the lazy comparison to Baby Metal, (signaling to me they have no exposure to music that is the slightest be avant-garde or is not top 40 background jams,) and it drives me crazy, but you just named two great bands, Everytime I Die and The Locust and I am very happy about it. I’d actually love to see you react to something new Poppy fans wouldn’t be likely to recommend, (but you’re likely to have reacted to “I disagree” by the time I post this comment 🤷🏻♀️ ) Check out, “Lowlife,” “Bleach Blonde Baby,” & “Time Is Up,” because they’re all different and all have music videos. Also, if you’re not already into them, check out Circle Takes The Square (based out of Savannah, Ga.,) specifically their As The Roots Undo album, (definitely can find them on Bandcamp.)
@@ChaseCarneson finally a local reactor who listens to good music that I listen to as well... definitely subscribing now, loving the videos keep it up👏
Great reaction! Please react to BLOODMONEY by Poppy, the lyrics are so good, the video is one-shot, and the music is just... Not gonna spoil any more, lol. Greetings from Argentina!
@@ChaseCarneson Dude... doesn't matter. Seriously, there's NO reactions to that song, so you'd be introducing your audience to a band that not many hear. I kinda die inside a little bit because of how little they get praise... and now Andy is a wrestler in AEW... I mean, normally that'd be weird, but not everyone knows about Every Time I Die, do they? That's like right in their wheelhouse!
@@Strathaczar completely agree. I was lucky enough to catch them in SA. Loooove those guys. I have to do them. And they have new stuff coming out soon.
@@ChaseCarneson Totally! There was a time when I thought I'd get into this stuff, but I'm not natural in front of a camera. But one thing I wanted to do was highlight bands I like that no one listens to for whatever reason and try and gateway drug people in. This is one of those bands and that song is so crazy that it would DEFINITELY force people down a rabbit hole to see what their about. Other bands I would have hit would be Anarchy Club, The Exies, Jinjer (like DUH!), The Living End, Rise Against (More commercial, I get it, but all I see are reactions to Savior... they have other material!), Shadows Fall, Soilwork, and Taproot. You'll find almost NO ONE talking about some of those bands, or reactions to one song then BOOM done. If you want a list of recommendations, I'm glad to provide them.
i can dig it.. reminds me off trying to do a serious sitdown listen of some Buckethead. something to check out.. 88 Kasyo Junrei - Butsumetsu Trishna. indie 3-piece. it's an older track, but these guys are still current. some kinda noise, punk, prog ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c7apuNjIRe0.html
Cool reaction (as always). You probably would be *really* shocked now if you watch one of her earlier videos when she was still full in "pop mode". :) Her first single "Lowlife" is awesome (but not the slightest bit metal) and has a great subversive clip too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lwnoSeiAFSY.html
@@ChaseCarneson If you want to increase your confusion even further you could watch her weird funny short clips she did back in the days, acting like some kind of android that is programmed by evil puppet masters. They are just hilarious (and soooo strange) but I love them, f.ex. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y4nHLHDtyVA.html or ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ayfBf2J-Qlc.html or ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CqsntljX0jg.html
@@ChaseCarneson Yeah those creepy vids were her kickstart into her musical carreer and made her an "internet phenomena". I just love those weird videos, they are so amazing and full of satire, it's hilarious. :)
So... this is proof that you can fail to enjoy something but recognize the talent and artistry behind it. It's this well produced mixture of soulless technical music and saccharin pop and computerized beats, brought together with a PG version of Eli Roth sensibilities. Now if only you'd used the Io Shirai entrance video version (Poppy played Io to the ring at a PPVevent) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LhTPYC3KzXo.html
DO MORE POPPY PLEASE!!! She has an entire album of great songs that you haven’t touched her. Concrete, I Disagree, Bloodmoney (which is nominated for a Grammy), Anything Like Me, even Don’t Go Outside. Any of these are worth your attention. I promise.
