Reacting To Steve Harvey's Money Advice (He Said What!?)
Estate planning guide: www.ramseysolu...
George Kamel is a personal finance expert and co-host of The Ramsey Show. Following Ramsey’s proven money plan, George went from negative net worth to a millionaire in under 10 years. His goal is to help people spend less, save more, and avoid money traps so they can live a life with more margin, options and freedom.
This channel will simplify complex money topics, bust money myths with actual facts, and debunk the stupid financial advice you're seeing in your social media feed. All with a healthy dose of pop culture, humor, and snark.

George i agree with MOST of your takeaways and advice except for the multiple accounts for married folks. My husband and i have used this strategy. One shared account for bills, another foir saving goals and emergency fund, and we each have our own checking. My husband is not a personal finance nerd like. Its just makes our marriage better and peaceful, we dont argue about money this way

I’m with you here. We also have the joint accounts for our income and family spending. The separate accounts are our “allowance” accounts for pocket money and the odd birthday check from our moms.

The only reason people need fully combined finances is if there is a significant difference in incomes (like one partner works and one is home), or if you don’t trust your spouse to manage money the same way you do. My husband and I make similar income. We have a joint account and both have separate accounts too. We dont fight about money. We’re every day millionaires and just working on paying down the mortgage.

My wife and I actually do the 4 bank account method. The separate accounts are very small and part of our monthly budget. Like about 100 bucks a month going in small. This is how I buy surprise anniversary gifts with out her knowing. Hence the word surprise. Also serves as a back up debit card in case our main joint account card gets compromised, which we are currently dealing with.

Joint accounts scare the crap out of me. My parents went joint and when they divorced (infidelity. Joint doesn’t prevent infidelity), it didn’t go final until 6 years later. They were fighting tooth and nail over the joint assets and joint accounts. Terrifying to think of following that by mingling my finances that much.

@desiv1170
@desiv1170 Год назад
@@GeorgeKamel Exactly. When you are married, all accounts ARE joint accounts... (In some states, you don't even have to be married if you have been together long enough) And I never understood the "she doesn't have to ask you to spend money and you don't have to ask her" argument... My wife doesn't ask me if she wants to buy something using our joint account. I don't ask her. That said, all of this is "our money" so we obviously will talk about the big items... Together...
@missmegan3694

Yeah, don’t get married and reap none of the rewards that are possible from a long-term, loving relationship and family. Die miserable and alone, without posterity. Great advice. @@desiv1170 This 100%. A relationship with separate accounts and zero transparency is not a relationship I want to be in, and where I live, after 2 years you're considered to be in a de facto relationship anyway. My plan, we have the same 4 accounts Steve mentioned. Our paychecks are deposited into the central account. From there we each deposit our spending allowance and investment funds into the applicable accounts. We both have full access and control to ALL accounts and once a month we meet to balance and review the central account. For me, it just makes life a little bit easier. It's already a pain to track groceries, light bills, phone bills etc. I don't want to be bothered with tracking how much my wife spent on a pair of pants. Besides, as long as communication is happening what's the difference whether it's a separate account or a line item in the budget?
@punkbassandcovers
@punkbassandcovers Год назад
It's not the four accounts that is concerning. Sure put the set aside budgeted spending money into a separate spending account if that's your thing. It's where Steve at 1:35 ish literally says do whatever you want and don't even check what your spouse is doing with the money. As George said, it's the lack of visibility of where the money is going. Communicating with your spouse on these things (such as money) is a must.
@kaycon4823
@kaycon4823 Год назад
@@punkbassandcovers So would you give your spouse $100 gift and then insist that they report exactly how to you exactly how spend that money or would you saying I am giving this money, spend it how you like? This is basically the same thing. It is not like they did not have a joint account and decided together how to spend that money BEFORE allocating money to the separate account. I do believe that couples should be able to access all accounts, but this is micro-managing and controlling. As far as financial infidelity or cheating, that is a character flaw. A person who cheats will find a way even without separate account. At one time I had my check go split so it went into two separate banks. I was not married, but if a person wanted to cheat this is a way to have a certain amount go into the main account in the first place. I am sure there are other ways to cheat if a person has that character.

We actually have five accounts, one is the main account for daily spending, one is our monthly bills that are all set to autopay, one is the emergency fund savings account and two of them are his/her “fun monies” accounts. We budget weekly and only our own fun money (which are line items in EveryDollar) go to those separate accounts. In Ally we can both See the Main, Bills, and Emergency. The two fun accounts are linked but can’t be seen by each other. With EveryDollar you can see all of these separate accounts for budget meeting discussions. Why polarize what he’s saying. There’s plenty of tools out there that achieve the same goal.

@@trevoncampbell2744 that argument can be about everything separate. "Why do you feel a need to have your own hobby that you don't share with your spouse?", "why do you feel the need to have separate social media accounts? Something in your marriage might be wrong if you feel a need for this kind of autonomy". People want autonomy for the autonomy. It's like with privacy. You don't want privacy just to hide stuff, you want privacy because it's in a human nature to want it. Feels safer if you can make your own decisions even among people you trust. And levels of comfort differ between different people. Imho, if getting married meant you have no choice but share everything and be shamed out of any privacy or autonomy (especially with "what are you trying to hide? you are probably cheating/want to cheat!"), people would be way less likely to get married. Thankfully in real life people negotiate, compromise and adjust.

This advice makes a lot of sense.

Nah I agree with Steve. Some accounts together but an account by yourself with an agreed amount per paycheck so you don’t have to ask makes you feel independent

i dont agree with George on the 4 bank account, even though we are married we still need some type of freedom to do what we want with money no questions ask, if i want to go buy a Motorcycle i dont have to ask because money is not coming from the house account or the joint account and if my wife wants to buy the purse she wants same thing.

Question for you George or RU-vid community: If you have joint everything, which I like the idea of, how do you go about gift giving to each other without knowing what each other got prior to receiving it (or at least where you got it from anyway)?

You could pay cash or if it's online buy a gift card to use to pay for the items.

@@suzy4705 Oh I like the idea of the gift cards, like the Visa prepaid ones or whatever. That's a great idea, thanks!

@@thehonesthiker just check for fees with those visa ones. I think it's usually a better idea to buy a gift card for the store itself rather than visa if you can!

@Suzy but with any of those things being a line item on the budget would require an explanation And anytime when you're balancing the book everything is accounted for the show up in the account to both spouse

You can't gift give without the other person noticing. The cash answers doesn't make sense bc most gifts are bought online these days plus I would notice if my spouse took out a lump of caashh would immediately ask why. My husband couldn't buy me a ring bc of this, so he had to have a friend buy it and then we both had to pay the friend back on something I hadn't agreed to pay for (this isn't me complaining about my husband. It was sweet I'm just explaining the awkwardness this situation causes). Now we have separate accounts for fun spending and we gift give from our own accounts. I think the DR team is too restrictive with their advice (more like rules). What works for some doesn't work for everyone.

I love Steve Harvey. He helped me to get to the level I’m at today. I jumped and I am going to keep on jumping.
