All that vitriol in the first post should be directed at our US health care system and food structures. I'm pissed that we know how to prevent many lifestyle diseases, but selling the poison, then the cure makes trillions, whereas making being healthy easier would cost billions.

Also these people love to point out how the "weight loss" industry makes so much money and is therefore predatory but never talk about the FAR more profitable junk food and fast food industries that actually do prey on people by making their food as addictive as possible by putting sugar in EVERYTHING. Yeah nothing shady there. It's totally the weight loss industry that's the problem.

Also perfect bloodwork is like saying my house is not on fire because there are no firefighters outside. I had perfect bloodwork but that was a problem because I had untreated hyperthyroidism... that was a red flag. I shouldn't have normal thyroid levels.
@lisaking.goalking
@lisaking.goalking 2 месяца назад
Also, your average bloodwork doesn't show everything. At one time, I had "perfect bloodwork" on a standard draw, but then they did follow ups on my inflammation levels (not on the standard test) and they were off the charts. 😬

I lost my mom to very sudden, very aggressive abdominal cancer last fall. Her labs were largely normal pretty much until the day she died. Labs aren't an indicator of health in the sense that labs only show you what you are checking. But if you don't know what to check for, they are useless. We women are prone to downplaying our symptoms and pain (and the medical establishment sadly often doesn't take us seriously), so by the time something manifests as urgent symptoms, it may be too late to do anything to reverse the condition. And let's not forget how excess weight impacts the joints, bones, and connective tissue. I know as a person with obesity it can be terrifying to face the complete reality of your health situation, which is why I suspect so many in the fat acceptance community are so militant and defensive. So many have the experience of what they perceive as their own failure, or the failure of their loved ones to accept them, or the failure of the medical system to support them. It may be easier to just accept things and then construct internal defences to keep proving to yourself that there is nothing wrong with obesity. But most people do have a breaking point, where denying reality is no longer a viable option. Sadly that point often comes when a lot of a person's health has been severely damaged. It's a hard situation.
@lisaking.goalking
@lisaking.goalking 2 месяца назад
Yeah, honestly besides my b12, iron, thyroid and inflammation numbers, my labs are normal. I'm not losing weight for b12, iron, or thyroid as those have zero effect from weight loss. But I am losing weight due to the inflammation definitely cause by how my weight effects my joints and connective tissue due to my connective tissue disease. Health is more than lab work and you're right about how women don't speak up for themselves. That is why it is so important to be your own best advocate.

@@lisaking.goalking Absolutely. And things only get harder as we age. Perimenopause can wreak havoc on a woman's body, and weight management is a huge part of alleviating the damage. I've been doing a lot of research (with my mom gone, I don't know what my genetics are in terms of peri- and menopause), and people like Dr. Mary Claire Haver are doing a tremendous job educating women about it, I highly recommend her. It's insane how uneducated even GYNs are on the topic of peri- and menopause, yet it's one of the most significant health-damaging events in a woman's life.

These are strawman arguments. Like yes,eating crappy processed food makes you gain weight. But eggs, veg fruit and chicken breast are not that expensive. People used to survive on potatoes and cabbage soup for crying out loud.

I agree. I think socioeconomic issues are a factor, but people can absolutely lose weight at a lower socioeconomic status. GraphicallyAlex is proving that. The biggest factor in socioeconomics in my opinion is education on how to live a healthy lifestyle.

I have to admit that I had to fight to get my thyroid checked. It was "normal." Then when I had a temper fit, my doctor asked if I would feel better if I had a sonagram. I said yes They found a cancer then they did a biopsy, Yep I had thyroid cancer. It's sad that I had to get angry to get the tests but once again when the government gets involved, my health suffers. BTW I'm a kidney transplant patient.

Professional sumo wrestlers and football linemen and body builders almost always lose the weight upon retirement. Weight is weight and fat or muscle it’s still brutal on the knees and heart. Recently a champion sumo wrestler died at only 53. The msin cause was all that weight.

This made me laugh because it reminded me of our discussion about capitalism & how I (a leftist) believe that the overconsumption of food actually feeds into capitalism (because yanno… giving a lot of money to corporations like fast food, etc). I may not agree with you politically when it comes to economics etc, but I think most of us can agree that the argument that it’s healthy or good to be morbidly obese is incorrect & damaging. Because… it’s reality that it’s not good for you to be that big. And it isn’t ✨socialist✨ to over consume in any stretch.

@@lisaking.goalking it’s just the co-opting of the class struggle, the right wing does it in different ways (ie, immigration discourse). There’s certainly a correlation between poverty and obesity, food deserts etc are real things, but their solution to the problem is fat acceptance when the answer *should* be to work to fix those systems, advocate for better food regulations, etc. Right problem, wrong frame.

For pre reference sake I have to highlight that I am fit, hubby was morbidly obese. For years I tried to help him get in shape, but he refused to engage and so I decided instead of arguing over him refusing to eat veggies that he was on his own. This did not affect him because he already chose to eat at least two meals in fast food. Most of our arguments were over me wanting to make him healthier meals and him stating he likes his fast food and refusing to take a sandwich to work with him instead. I did my weekly grocery shopping on my own. I would spend between 45 and 60 dollars and get a week's worth of food. Well, one day hubby came with me to the grocery store. He was visibly annoyed while I poked around the vegetables, but I ignored it and did my shopping for the week. Once back in the car, after struggling to get in because of his weight, he looked at my receipt, which was 48 dollars and change and said "eating healthy is sooooo expensive!" And I dunno... something inside me snapped. I had been holding back a lot of anger with the situation, and a lot of sadness because while I was well aware he was in this shape when I met him, I looked at it as "I can help him with that. He's a sweet and genuine guy and I like him...I can help him." Not realizing how truly difficult it was going to be to get him to even eat a damn veggie. I did not realize he was literally addicted to fast food. So, I reached down at my feet and plucked one of the random fast food receipts that littered the floor of his car and noted out loud that he eats fast food 3 meals a day, each time averaging somewhere between 23-26 dollars for what is one meal for himself. I spent 48 dollars on ingredients to make myself 3 meals a day for a week. After I laid it out in my rant he became very quiet for the next week and I honestly felt awful for how heated I got. I was harboring a lot of negative feelings and among them is he is hurting himself and there is nothing I can do to stop him so I was seriously considering divorcing him as to not have to watch it in action. After a week of barely saying two words to me he asked to talk. He immediately apologized to me because he had been doing the math and realized he was spending over 400 dollars a week in fast food. He hadn't realized how expensive his habit was and he wanted me to help him again and cook for him like I was trying to do all along. He promised he would not refuse to eat it, even if it contains veggies. So, I did...and you know what? He lost weight! Has it been linear? Nah. He had a few fast food relapses, but once he kicked the stuff long enough to see inflammation and pain drastically reduce, if not all together vanish, he hasn't looked back. I told him his pain was being caused by the fast food. He did not believe me till he was off the stuff long enough to see pain he had dealt with chronically for years suddenly go away, and swelling go down.

I think it’s one of those things where there’s a grain of truth in arguments and then people go way to far. Like I argue that there should be a wider ‘heathy’ range of weights by height than 10ths if we’re going to use that. I (stocky and broad) cannot be the same weight as my friend (small frame, chest, and build) despite being the same height. That doesn’t mean I’m heath at any size. At 5’4” and over 200lbs I’m not healthy, I hurt everywhere. Does the commenter have some points- sure. Some things are Joe difficult to access and some people are not prone to issues, within a range. Once you get to an extreme- any way, big, small, muscles, not- it’s unhealthy and it was done in a deliberate fashion. No one accidentally starves and no one is accidentally over 300lbs. We make choices.

@JS-mg1mk
@JS-mg1mk 2 месяца назад
@@lisaking.goalking I also don't think these people understand how difficult it is to actually grow and maintain muscle mass. As someone who has spent years trying to put on muscle by eating in a surplus, when you actually diet back down in order to see the muscle you've built it's shocking how small you get even with all that muscle. I was 120lbs for years before I finally decided to start eating more and focus on gaining and after 3 years I'm probably only about 15lbs heavier due to muscle gain and I still have a little more fat on my body than I did before. It's like the people who say BMI doesn't account for muscle as if the doctor can't tell the difference between a body builder and someone who's obese. Like, yeah they might have some muscle but it's covered by all the excess fat. The fat is the problem, not the muscle.

They basically present themselves as healthy because they're vegan, but the reason they can't lose weight is all the oil and processed foods. A lot of vegans got mad at me over it.
