I read somewhere that its death root consuming the erd tree. The tree before the erdtree wouldve been in the distant past where as the dlc takes place in the shadow realm, presumably in the recent past timeline.

Pretty sure you are right with the dragon dancers, looks like two humanoid torsos(omen horns?) with arms and legs under there with two hands holding the mask in place. The veils around the tree look like the baldaquin in the queens bedchamber, maybe reference to a dreamworld? Messmer the Impaler is wild, he has dragon communion eyes and seal, casts bloodflame?, straightforward reference to the Impaler Vlad III Tepes (Vlad Drăculea) + cute snek. There is more info from a short interview, confirming poison swamps(of course) and it's bigger than limgrave. Some historical geeking out: The spiked shield at the end is a "duelling shield" that shows up in Hans Talhoffers 15th century German fencing manuscript in the section on judicial duelling. Fromsoft has always modelled some weapons on historical ones, they like to use the Met museum a lot.

Miyazaki confirmed in a interview that this is not in the past or future, its in the present time. You will need to have defeated Raghdan and Mogh to be able to access the DLC area. It was also confirmed that yes you will touch the arm to access the DLC area. I believe it will be Miquella that will guide us now instead of The Greater Will Messmer is Marika and Radagon child, there are three butterflies that symbolize each child: Aeonian butterfly - Malenia; Nascent butterfly - Miquella; Smoldering Butterfly - ? ; Everyone associated both Aeonian and Smoldering to Malenia but with Messmer reveal and his power being red fire, Smoldering Butterfly 100% symbolizes him. Another thing is that there is a crypt called "Impaler's Catacombst" and near by that Catacomb there is a ghost that you can talk to, he says: "O Marika, Queen Eternal. He is your unwanted child", whats Messmer title? The Impaler.

My theory is we will see the distant past thru Miquella's point of view. Might even answer some questions we either have or never thought about. Example: What makes our character so special in the beginning to get grace given to us? I wouldn't be surprised if Messmer either is a nickname of Rykard's or a bastard child of Rykard's (hence the Snake).

Since it's the same universe as Lands Between, this veils in the sky might be what casts shadow over other trees that not allows them to grow.

Miquella followed Marika into the Land of Shadow, a place separate from the Lands Between. Instead of following the guidance of Grace, we walk in Miquella’s footsteps. It has a separate map from the Lands Between. There are also 8 new weapons classes and more than 10 major bosses and some minor ones.

The person with red hair that you thought was young Rikard, I think that may be older Miquella. His arm on the first shot you see him looks a lot like the withered arm hanging out of the egg in Mohg's arena. That would explain why he uses blood flame, that's Mohg's influence. My overall theory is that we're not seeing the past, we're seeing Miquella's vision of the future. In that future, the Haligtree has stretched up to wrap around the Erdtree and cast a shadow over the lands between. Possibly trying to undo the golden order and return the world to a more primal state.
