Fun story about when I was a little kid: Before I know LGBTQ+ was a thing, I mean like 4-6 years old, I would always ask my mom "Mommy? Can a girl marry a girl?" She would always say yes. Then i would sometimes say something along the lines of that would cool if I married a girl. I would ask the same thing if boys could marry boys, my mom would say yes. I would also ask if a girl married to a girl and a boy married to a boy could have kids. Again she would answer yes. Now looking back on it I am so glad my mom is a supportive person and still is. I was a kid full of a lot of questions

Gay confession from when I was nine: I went to my friend’s 10th birthday party with a bunch of other girls. Two of the girls were lesbians and dating already. After a couple hours of nothingness we decided to use my water bottle to play spin the bottle. It was my turn and I ended up kissing my friend on the cheek. Two years later and I find out I’m bisexual. Couple more years later go by and I find out I want to kiss her again.

I'm just remembering the first time I came across the word lesbian. It was quite a positive experience. I was 11 and was looking around my new secondary school, and this one teacher who was the head of the lower years and in charge of helping people joining the school was giving me and my mum a tour. There was a sign that said "It's ok to be a lesbian" or something like that. I had never heard the word before and I asked him what it meant. I think he was a bit taken aback that I didn't know, and he looked to my mum who also seemed surprised I didn't know. He explained that it was a girl who liked other girls or something like that and I said "Isn't that being gay?" and he said that it was but it referred specifically to girls. I was like "Huh. Why do girls get a special word? Is there a special word for boys?" "I don't think so, you would just say they're gay." "Hmm, that's not very fair." Haha! So that's what little 11 year old me thought about the issue.

I sensed some queerness in me for a while, and some others had picked it up earlier. But it was often the binary cisgender idea of "gay male" or "straight male". In junior high, a friend (who was in the closet) realized that I was into girls, and he was like "So, you're a d*k*?". Twenty-something years later, we're still Facebook friends (at least 4 people from our old friend group have already come out), and I'm starting to come out as trans lesbian. I'm not even sure if in 2021, this friend would remember, but he interestingly enough may have been on to something.
