Thanks for sharing some of your replies. What I find interesting is the number of people who are negative cruise tourists watching a cruise channel. As a NZer and someone who loves cruising I know there are many of us here upset with the cancellation of Explorer and the direction things are heading. Keep sharing the cruise news from down under.

If you come up with something I don't agree about I might consider commenting in as constructive a manner as possible, but to date you seem spot on with your observations of the state of the cruise industry. I suppose the positive from all the negativity is that these sad misinformed anti-tourism people won't be on a cruise that I will be enjoying.

Well Done Adrian, agree with all your responses to mostly minority views. In Tauranga i booked local car hire , went to Rotorua, the Māori village, the local pub for lunch, the local petrol station for fuel and watched as Trucks were loading local food, beverages and fuel on the ship in port. Also watch as local trucks pump out waste etc. it is a great local supporter even if some think that the cruisers don't spend much, there is literally pallets and pallets of stuff being loaded at nearly all ports - all from the local town/city

Interesting. A lot of places, more enlightened in my opinion, encourage cruise ships to visit. I can cite a couple of instances where people actually turn up, welcome and assist cruise passengers, all without payment, because they are happy to do so. There are wonderful volunteers in Vancouver, Canada for example, who assist in directing people to their ship from the nearby Skytrain Stations. They enjoy the interaction with people from all over, and give a positive impression for their city. Hopefully many of them will come back and further explore the city and surrounds, pumping more into the local economy. Likewise Eden, NSW where volunteers are proud to show off their little bit of paradise on the NSW South Coast. Hopefully some of those passengers will come back to stay longer on some future occasion.

Many people love cruising . It's their choice of a holiday and their right to choose that type of holiday. Some like camping, some like caravanning, some like road trips. Why do some people see the need to denigrate cruisers. I've suffered more food poisoning and viruses from land based holidays than on a cruise. People need to get their facts straight before criticising cruisers and the industry. I like your interesting and informative videos. Keep it up Adrian.

Adrian I'm a kiwi and I love your videos and cruising as did my late father who spent over 1500 days at sea on cruise ships. I think you may have just inflamed a few patriotic compatriots with the thumb nail. It could be constrewed as a dig at New Zealanders in general even though I know you'd never be so inclined. Just remember if you made that video referencing the USA or other markets it would also lead to some flak. Love your work but don't underestimate people's patriotism even though those particular unintelligent comments don't reflect the 99% of your NZ viewers. I certainly appreciated the video calling out our govt and the media here has also picked up on the negative impact it will have on tourism here.

"greedy corporations" Um, does that person not want international business investment? They don't want the millions or even billions of dollars that the tourism industry creates for New Zealand? If no international tourists came to NZ at all people would be crying poor. Ultimately, it sounds like your video may have left the target audience. People who are really into cruises or even just interested in them probably appreciated the information you gave. It sounds like all these commenters are people who would never cruise anyway.

Very good point about all the supplies that ships source at the different ports - it’s not purely about passenger spend, but the cruise line spend with local suppliers too, so if cruising stops it’s not just the tourist industry that is affected

I work with people who can tell me how bad Cruise ships are having never travelled more than a few hours from where they live and never on a ship. We love cruising, love traveling in general and are even looking at a short Cruise out of Brisbane to get married. The times I have been to NZ I have spent more than on a cup of coffee, I’ve gone into clothes shops and come out with a few items, I go on the tours, I’ve spent money at the kiwi fruit place and sheep farms. I assume this is just an attack on the cruise industry, what about people flying in and doing bus trips or hire cars, they pollute the air too. I think they are just being selfish and overreacting. Stopping the ships from coming in, isn’t going to stop climate change, if that’s what they are worrying about.

I think people need to engage their brains and do research before spreading the nonsense they have been sending you. As you said, governments look at short-term gain (increase taxes) without looking at long-term issues (lack of employment, hotels and tourism failing).

Thanks! Yes, there's definitely lots to consider when it comes to cruise dollars. Simply washing a cruise ship loaded at a turnaround port will prove to naysayers that cruise lines purchase up big on local supplies - especially fresh produce!

Last time i was in NZ (Picton) i asked the person behind the bar in a hotel what was it like when there is no cruise ship in port, that person said it was very slow business wise, I loved Picton by the way😀! Just love Speight's Gold Medal, it was a great NZ cruise, had a ball.

Picton is gorgeous! I've been there twice, once I booked a kayaking session with a local operator, and another time we took a private wine tour to the Marlborough wine region (and purchased a few bottles to take back home...) very fun!

Hey, I live in NZ and Kiwis can be notoriously thin-skinned about anything remotely less than super-complimentary about NZ. On the one hand it’s very patriotic, but it can seem a little immature at times. So don't be surprised at some of the reaction you got on your video about the difficulties faced by the cruise industry here.

Cruise passengers are not the tourists they want? We get off the ship, take an excursion (employing a driver and sometimesa guide), visit an area (probably buy a souvenir and a snack which employs people), sometimes visit hostorical sites which may involve a full blown lunch (employing people). Many places i would love to stay two days and visit more places that employ people/locals. We saw many places close during the cv19 and tourist areas died for two years bc there were no tourist at all. I bet those businesses that rely on tourism don't want to ban cruise tourists.

100%! I have my suspicions that most of the anti-cruise types have never owned or operated a business. I could be wrong... but I doubt it. As someone who's been self employed for nearly a decade, I understand the important of proper economic policy that encourages industry growth. That doesn't need to come at the expense of environmental concerns and those should always be addressed by industry and government, but, cutting things out entirely is just so... dumb.

Hi Adrian, where to start. firstly i hate keyboard warriors!. These clowns who come on here and are ante cruise have prob never cruised and dont have a clue about it.. Im more afraid of going into a mall with all those germs than going on a cruise.. they are not row boats, there is plaenty of space to get away from others if need be.. including staying onboard if tourist arent welcome in your country. Also, Tourist are extremely important to every place, it helps the local economy a great deal. I think you;re doing a great job of informing us abut things Adrian. I find people that have an opinion on how bad cruises are or hate cruising have never been on one. My young family love cruising. My kids lose their mind everytime we book one. Next year will be my kids 6th cruise and they already are planning all the things they will do. They are hands down the best value family vacations. And whether you’re a person that loves sitting by the pool. Clubbing. Going to shows. Going down slides. The choice is there for you and what style of holiday you want. Being able to switch off from the world for a week or so is another wonderful thing to enjoy and maybe the haters should try that instead of hating on cruises. Get off videos that are made for lovers of cruising and go enjoy your world. And just add to @thecruiseandtravelguy comments. I agree. Crusies ships even though they have rep for being germ factories are WAY cleaner then your local leagues club or rsl. And I know that for a fact.

Who buys ice cream? We get it on board for free. Clearly these ignorant comments come from people who don't care about their economy. Just shut yourself off from life. The cruise ships are cleaner then your home. It's not the ships being dirty. It's viruses being couched. We did walking on our cruise in N.Z then went shopping spending big $$. I did a 10 night NZ cruise on Ovation of the Seas and actually kept a record of what we spent. Offshore spend varied. Picton General shopping & food $70, Napier Independent excursion $120, food $50, shopping $350, Wellington Independent excursion $130, food $45, general shopping $120, Dunedin Independent tour $120, Food $30, Shopping $55, Fjord Cruising No actual offshore spend but I assume the cruiseline pay a per passenger fee. So overall from the 4 ports we visited, we spent NZD1090 on top of whatever the cruiseline pays each port. Yes, there are some people who avoid spending much off the ship but I think that ruins the experience anyway.

Onya Adrian. Those people complaining are ignorant. If the spend per passenger in Auckland is $1k and if Auckland gets 250,000 passengers and 50 cruise ships per season that's a spend of $250m by passengers per season. Then there are the cruise ship's spend on produce etc. So maybe around $1b per season. That's an awful lot of money going to farmers, hotels, tour operators, cafe's etc. My numbers are estimates but the point is made. Without cruise lines, many businesses would fail and fold causing significant unemployment. GO CRUISERS

These comments highlight a previous comment that I made. There’s a strong section of the New Zealand community that don’t want cruises and I expect the New Zealand government will be forced to make changes further discouraging cruises to the country. Regarding germ factories, post Covid. I have done over 50 cruises my total Covid infection count stands at zero. Yes, I am a Novid.

I agree with you completely, we are retired old timers who embrace the cruise holiday lifestyle and we do inject dollars into the local economy via cabs, hotels, restaurants etc. Two examples on a couple of our trips were firstly in Brisbane with a two day pre-cruise we spent around $1500 and secondly, next month we cruise Alaska via Vancouver and our spend will be $3000+. I appreciate all your good work and there are those of us who support you whole heartedly.

We have been to NZ four times, twice staying post cruise for a couple of days in Auckland. We stayed in hotels, used the public transport system and cabs, went to the movies, went to dining venues, went to a shopping mall and bought things like shoes and bags and other clothing items and we have even flown home via Air New Zealand … and yes bought coffee and ice cream and we are partial to a Kiwi pie.

The times I have been to NZ I have spent more than on a cup of coffee, I’ve gone into clothes shops and come out with a few items, I go on the tours, I’ve spent money at the kiwi fruit place and sheep farms. I assume this is just an attack on the cruise industry, what about people flying in and doing bus trips or hire cars, they pollute the air too. I think they are just being selfish and overreacting. Stopping the ships from coming in, isn’t going to stop climate change, if that’s what they are worrying about.

Good response to the negatives on your last one. Just one minor technical correction, (if I may). The amount of power (electricity) a large liner uses is huge and there would be very few ports in the world that could supply that from a shore connection. That's why they run their generators in port. (From someone who spent 5 years at sea on large ships)

I could be confused, but based on the Shore Power information provided by the NSW Port Authority for White Bay, it looks like ships will plug in and not rely on any of their onboard power generation? @@TheCruiseandTravelGuy Hi Guy. Thanks, watched the NSW Port Authority video on shore power. Great idea for a big port with lots of traffic but not affordable for smaller ports at about (A$60 million) And it isn't expected to be available until the year 2040. Then you have the other technical issues with electricity. What voltage? What frequency? Most of the world runs on 240 volts at 50 Hz, USA runs on 110 volts 60 Hz - I suspect the ships follow suit. Thanks for introducing the topic - very interesting to view everyone's opinions.

Hey Donna, don't stoop to the level of a few internet trolls. Like most countries and cruise destinations, most of us do welcome cruise ship tourists. I live near Tauranga, and love to see the ships come in to our harbour, and it is sad to think that that may slow down. So, come on over, we have a lot to offer, and ignore the few negative nelly trolls. :)
