I 100% agree with what you said about perfectionism being a hindrance sometimes. Ever since I found your channel I have been obsessing over my squat form, I film EVERY set and analyze every single one multiple times to the point my 2 hour workouts became 3 hour workouts. As well, I changed my form so many times that I actually lost progress on my squat. It's hard to get past it cause I wanted to look like a chinese weight lifter doing ATG squats but realized I wasn't built for that. Long as your form isn't horrendous and you don't feel any discomfort or pain, should continue with your form and build upon that instead of over analyzing it and losing time and progress!

I think Calvin at the end would really benefit from doing box squats, it would really teach him to sit back the squats more. Seems like a long limbed lifter, so wider stance and pontting toes more out should help, depending on if his hips allow it.

Thank you for the feedback! I agree on the point of confidence under the bar, and I'll focus more on locking my lats into place to prevent that bar movement upwards. Appreciate it :)

Calvin looks to be working hard but rushing the decent and not reaching depth. Lighter paused work with focused control in the decent would be my advise. Messing with foot placement and hip angle might make depth easier.

I appreciate your comment on over analyzing technique that can be detrimental to performance. I've been very cautious and aware of my deadlift form for months. But, after watching many of your form check videos, I realized I was being too focused on the very slight flexion in my back. It was causing me more injuries and cramps during the lift because I was forcefully extending beyond a "comfortable" range (I understand lifting heavy isn't comfortable, but I also didn't feel strong/stable in an overextended position). After your videos, I learned a neutral lower back and slight flexion in the upper back is more than sufficient for a strong and stable starting position.

Im not sure if you have already done another one of these videos because this is my first time watching but just a tip for anyone lifting, something I noticed with Calvin is he was looking down and his knee's were very close together, you always want to look foward and keep your chin up and when squatting keep your knee's about shoulder width apat.

Slowing Calvin's squat down, it is really noticeable that he breaks from the knees rather than the hips (pause at 16:15) and then folds in on himself as a squat morning (pause at 16:29). I would look at: 1. Break from the hips rather than the knees. Have the knees push outwards to separate the legs and utilise the adductors. This should naturally lead to the hips leading the movement and being able to really sit into it. 2. Aim for a consistent torso angle. The exact angle will depend on if he goes high bar or low bar, but either way, keeping the chest up to maintain the torso angle. Fixing suggestion (1) should really help with this too. 3. Minor additional correction - try to get feet and hips more under the bar as you unrack - this becomes important as the weight goes up.

To Calvin i suggest using a very light weight for a mock exercise to find a comfortable position where you can squat as low as possible. Even if you don't squat ATG when powerlifting, you can get the comfort and confidence in feeling out the bottom of the squat. And then like some others mention, try flaring your toes a biiiit more and push you knees out toward your toes

Hi, i've got a weird groin/adductor issue where when i finish a set and bring my stance back in to stand i feel an ache high up in my groin. I have pretty weak glutes and hamstrings compared to quads and lower back (i have a major discrepancy between sumo and conventional). Do you reckon it's my adductors trying to take over to extend the hips? I have good mobility so i don't think that's the issue. The pain is never during the rep but only when i bring my feet back in. Thanks for your time if you answer!

Calvin looks like he's doing a lowbar high bar hybrid. The bar position on the shoulders is lowbar but the foot positioning looks more high bar. I'd have a slightly wider base for that bar position and point the toes out a bit more to keep the knees inline with the feet better. Should help with the

For his squats at the end, i would firstly try pointing your toes out a bit more, and maybe a bit of a wider stance. Your heels also seem to come off the ground and just your overall movement makes me think you need sit back a bit more and use your hips a bit more, cus the squat looks knee dominant. Hope this made sense lmao.

I think Calvin's squat looks pretty good. I would say look out a little more rather than straight down and pull the shoulder blades more together for a tighter upper back. Maybe try a little wider stance, he seems tall, or push the knees out as there might be some knee valgus. I agree with controlling descent a little more.

given the side camera angle i cant really see his squat stance, but I think he could benefit from a slightly wider and more externally rotated squat stance. This way, the weight will be better distributed on his feet, allowing a more efficient dispersion of force.

Last guy i would say kick the knees on the outside to be able to hit dept, look in front of you when going down, and tuck your elbow in when going up to give a bit of a drive to be tighter. Thats what I would tell him!

I recognise Calvin’s form, I used to squat just like that. I’ll be honest the biggest issue seems to be back stability, he feels a bit folded over. He’s also not getting to depth, nor being consistent with depth, so I would recommend working on pause squats, getting real confident at finding depth, and spending some time under the bar. Thinking about bracing technique could be really useful as well
@jrodtopo

Rowers have it right: Deadlift is the only lift that matters. But, yeah, it looks like Calvin's knees are shifting back each rep. It's always hard to give queues that have any meaning to somebody who isn't familiar with them already, but I would really focus on keeping those knees forward in the ascent. Hopefully, the squats are useful as an assistance movement in his deadlift training.

Calvins back positioning looks very decent to me. Could widen the stance and point the toes a little bit out. Knees look kinda shaky. This might help already. Maybe focus on the bracing in the end, looks like he's losing a little when he hits depth. Try to actively squeeze your butt cheeks as well to avoid any issues with the knees.

Maybe Calvin lack a little on core strength, keeping eye sight a little bit higher could prevent him from "folding" and then he just need to put some meat on those legs, accessories accessories and other accessories to punish those long legs.
@chillpwn1
@chillpwn1 3 года назад
I don't have much experience with low bar squat, but Calvin's squat looks like it puts a lot of pressure on the knee. I think he should lower the weight a little and focus on hinging more at the hips and less with the knees, and he should try to use his butt more/push through his heels a bit more. He might benefit from exploring different feet placements. For example, pointing his feet a little outwards or inwards/widening or narrowing his stance.
@thomasspielman577
@thomasspielman577 3 года назад
To me, I'd say Calvin is somewhat dive-bombing his squats and breaks at the knees instead of his hips and hes not pushing his hips back enough during the eccentric portion. Also he could probably keep his back tighter as well.
@WhoDuckDie
@WhoDuckDie 3 года назад
I think Martin should actually work on his ankle mobility. On top of that, try some lighter goblet or even front squats with an incline heel. Put a plate under your heel. It’ll shoot your knees forward and get you use to a deeper squat.
@jonathanmiller1710
@jonathanmiller1710 3 года назад
Legs could be spread apart a little more. Hes not getting quite the depth he should be and when hes driving with his legs his core isnt staying tight enough which is causing him to lean forward in his lift

Martin perhaps needs to practice breathing and bracing a bit more. Bar position on back a bit off perhaps? Seems like a mixture of low bar and high bar to me. I could be wrong. Point his feet out a bit to side. Seems like weight is heavy. Should eat more too lol, looking skinny no offense.
