People who say that are wrong. They are entitled to their opinions, but they're wrong 😂 Having books read to you is an ancient tradition going back to Greeks/the very first literate people. HOW DARE THEY!!! I PREFER AUDIOBOOKS TO ANY OTHER TYPE OF BOOK AND WILL DIE ON THIS HILL! I may not be dyslexic but I just find it so much easier, for me, and a lot less tiring. I like being able to close my eyes and imagine rather than staring at a page re-reading or misunderstanding something because my eyes skipped over that part. 1st place: audiobooks 2nd: physical books Last place: e-books, my eyes cannot with ebooks.

I don’t hate on ppl who used audio books to read bc sometimes that’s just the way they prefer to read. Audiobooks might work better for them. I’ve tried audiobooks and it doesn’t work well for me. I would love to listen to a book while preparing food or cleaning my room or walking my dogs. It works a bit better with non fiction books. I have seen the “I don’t trust people who rate everything five stars” opinion before and I’ve never understood it because I’ve been on the bookish internet for years now and I have never seen a creator give every book they read 5 stars. Literally never. Who are these people talking about??? Omg, I agree with the “the love interest only being nice to the MC isn’t cute” SO MUCH!!! I used to be obsessed with that trope as a teenager but as I’ve gotten older I realise I’d want a partner who is nice and normal and gets on with people lol. It sounds romantic in theory but honestly that would be so embarrassing to have a partner who is horrible to your friends and family!

I don’t like when I encounter a booktuber who is afraid to say they didn’t give something 4-5 stars - it is often people who make their income from social media so they need to always rate higher to make sure they maintain relationships with publishers and future opportunities. So therefore, it does not count as reading. Who else agrees with me???” Like stfu, at the end of the day everyone is consuming the same story so who actually gives a shit in what they are consuming the story? I feel the difference lies in the way you imagine things in your mind. With an audiobook, you don't imagine the voice of a character, you're pretty much just told what they sound like. Neither is better than the other, but it's still a different experience.

19:33 was so damn true because I learned this only a few months ago myself and in a 20 year old guy. I've read so many bad sex scenes and terrible depictions of female anatomy in romance books which really pissed me off because I actually learned about reproductive health and things like menstruation when I was fifteen so I got really good at telling inaccuracies or flat out mistakes made by male authors in books. And then one day I was reading a fanfic which involved a discussion between the main characters over stuff like birth control and one of them mentions the risk of UTIs and I was like ???? Because I'd never heard of them before. Come to find out that I'd just never been taught about this extremely important part of reproductive health. It doesn't really matter to me personally bc I'm gay and also possibly ace but still, that was a real shocker to me that such a key part of sex education had just been forgotten by the mandated syllabus of my home country and there are god knows how many people walking around with no knowledge of this subject who are going to end up suffering for it.

I think it is my bad for not understanding, but like, I would always go by definition. So I was quite startled when I, an autistic person, was all of a sudden getting called ableist because I was going by the definition of reading I was taught, which is processing information through print. All of a sudden now I am getting screamed at through a screen for 'being ableist, when I did not have any bad intentions.
@Moonlight-řæven
@Moonlight-řæven 5 месяцев назад
@@TessaIsupposepeople always get mad about facts and when definitions don’t fit their narrative. It’s true audio books are not reading. It’s someone reading to you and that’s fine, nothing to be ashamed of. No matter the reason why you are listening to books it still by definition means you are not reading. You can say whatever, but at the end of the day I will continue to go by the correct definition and use correct language. I have empathy if you are unable to read, truly I do but sometimes people just aren’t able to do certain things, sugarcoating won’t do anything or lying and saying you’re reading won’t help either, I’m glad that you’re still able to listen though and enjoy a book you enjoy, but it’s still not reading, you are listening. To the people who say that’s ableist, please stop projecting. That’s your own personal insecurities that you need to work on, and I will make one thing very clear, I won’t allow you to project your personal insecurities onto me for being factually correct. It’s also manipulating to make them feel bad and stop talking because you don’t like knowing you can’t or aren’t reading, just know I don’t feel bad for saying the truth nor will I be shut down. There’s truth which we need to accept or definitions will mean nothing anymore. Never dumb yourself down for the people who can’t accept reality and refuse to go by the correct definitions.

I read primarily physical books because it's my preference.. I can read faster that way, but I do typically read 1 to 2 audiobooks a month in addition to the 8-10 physical books, but I only listen to audiobooks because it helps me read **more**, not **faster**. I can read about 2 to 3 times faster with my eyeballs, I also can comprehend the information better and retain it better, I can go back and reread things, I can annotate, I can use my own inflections for the characters voices and control the pacing Etc I find myself getting really distracted when I'm listening to audiobooks and I have to go back and re-listen often. I am actually quite envious of people who can listen to so many audiobooks.. I can only listen while I'm walking, driving, cleaning, doing art... doing something.. but if I'm sitting down, I'm going to physically read.

On special editions: Listen, if I love a book and it gets rereleased with a pretty cover, assuming I can afford it at the time, I'm probably buying it. Also, I definitely own several of my favorites in different formats. Physical copy, audiobook, ebook. The only downside to audiobooks for me is Voice Choices sometimes. Like "oh, okay, that's the voice you chose for that character. Okay." It's incredibly subjective, mind you, and it's mostly with audiobooks I listened to after reading the physical book, and it's just a difference with what I imagined versus what the audiobook reader chose to do.

With the opinion about audiobooks not counting as reading which I very much disagree with, I’ve had people say that graphic novels/manga/comics are mostly pictures. I’ve had people say why don’t you finish the graphic novels I have piled up from library faster since it’s mostly pictures which isn’t true. There’s a good balance of words and artwork in graphic novels/manga/comics. I also have ADHD and I’m a mood reader so if I’m not in the mood I won’t read and I also have a hard time just sitting and reading. Like I can read books with artwork or told in a non-standard way like verse faster than a standard novel because it just keeps my attention longer since there’s a lot to look at, whereas with a novel that’s just words it becomes harder to sit and read for a long time unless I’m really invested which doesn’t happen all the time.

It’s so ableist and elitist to think otherwise, not to mention not only are you supporting an author but you’re supporting a voice actor or several voice actors. Some of these books are full PRODUCTIONS and they’re MAGICAL. 2. Explicit smut ruins a book, the point of reading a book or writing a book is leaving enough space for the readers brain to fill in the blanks. Sometimes we need detail to help sign post, but sometimes the author needs to step back and let the readers brain do some work!

🦋 About the whole "audiobooks are real reading" I agree EXCEPT when it comes to kids learning to read. I think the reading comprehension skills from audiobooks (or hearing someone read aloud) are important for learning to read, but I wouldn't say an 8 year old who can only "read" audiobooks and not physical books can read. That child needs to be evaluated for learning/intellectual/eye disabilities and get extra help in school, because it's important for them to learn to read the "usual" way too. It IS disabling to not be able to read physical books, notes, letters, signs, and so on, whether it's caused by another disability or by educational neglect. However, if we're talking about adults reading for fun/work/intellectual pursuits (which is typically the case with this debate), we're talking about reading as the ability to comprehend a narrative, analyse it, and draw own conclusions. That is a different task from simply decoding letters into words, and can be done just as well by eye or ear. So in that (most) case(s), audiobooks are real books.

Great video! Very entertaining! The no book over 350 pages thing I definitely agree with. Have you read Karen Rose? She writes romantic suspense and a lot of her books clock in at over 500 pages, and half of it is just her catching you up on what's happened to characters from previous books, which has nothing to do with the current plot. I liked her stuff at first, but with characters from 20 plus books all popping up, it's just ridiculous and confusing. Though, to be honest, I've enjoyed plenty of books over 400 pages.

I love your videos! I have a few thoughts on this one. I read over 200 books in a year, but I have always been a fast reader, and then I was an English teacher for 5 years, so I had to read fast to get things graded on time. People saying I'm obviously not really reading irritate me, because, like, how do you know? Also, friends to lovers is my favorite romance trope! Finally, yes. I wish we could teach more modern texts in schools, but the issue is getting things approved. It can be a huge fight, so I always had modern classics as book group books or self-select books to even it out. I absolutely loved teaching Macbeth, Lord of the Flies, and Animal Farm. But I also had a lot of fun teaching Divergent and Holes.

I also agree with having an age rating for books. I don’t know if they still do it, but they used to put a “reading comprehension age” in with the copyright info and it had nothing to do with the actual content. Which, is problematic for a lot of reasons, but also just because a 12 year old can read it doesn’t mean they should. It also went the other way, back when graphic novels and manga weren’t mainstream and they would put them in the kids section just because they were picture based.

Audiobooks are awesome for learning and practicing another language, thanks to audiobooks I've been able to learn English and because of that, I found a remote job in the US. So sorry to the person that commented that, but audiobooks are awesome and I'll always love what they've done for me.

There’s more to experiencing an audiobook than just comprehension though…Imo, listening to audiobooks at 2x+ speed takes away from the experience bc you have less time to process the thoughts, feelings, and emotions that the book elicits. You could pause when something big happens, but waking the screen on your phone in order to pause can take you out of the experience. And when your listening speed is so fast, any freak outs will cause you to miss some of what’s being said, and it again takes you out of the moment to have to skip back 15 seconds at a time to catch back up to the last thing you actually heard. Maybe I’m just sensitive about those things though 🤷🏾‍♀️…plus I’m biased bc my ability to understand what the narrator is even saying completely dissolves after like 1.5x speed 😂😂

Idk girl. I listen to books at 2-2.5x speed and that's generally a bit slower than I would physically read it. With your logic, I should therefore read a physical book slower so I can digest it, but I don't think anyone (at least that I've seen) would make that argument. People's brains process things at different speeds and there is nothing wrong with the amount of time any one person personally needs. I can't process books well past 3x speed - it starts to sound like incoherent gibberish, but that doesn't mean I think those who do listen on idk, 3.3x speed, can't comprehend what is going on.

🦋I agree that booktok is changing the quality of books published because I feel like publishers will want to publish books that they know will sell and right now it’s enemies to lovers with smut and the reason that upsets me as someone who has always loved romance and romance in her fantasy is because its not well written or just super silly/insta love(insta boning) I have always used booktube for my recommendations and I try to stay off tiktok but many content creators are using it and most have read books because of tiktok so I feel like its also changed what books would have been on my radar

people who hate audiobooks are ridiculous, for most of history people were illiterate, they couldn't read at all, that doesn't mean they couldn't enjoy literature. there were places to go to listen to someone else read books, authors would come and read their books, and sometimes would memorize it and perform it in shows. So to think that people who have difficulty reading shouldn't be able to enjoy literacy in peace is crazy. Let people live.

YES I am firmly in the pro-bodice-ripper art covers for romance covers camp. The modern photoshopped models is just boring lol. And YES on rather having love interest who is kind or at least not a dick. I don't know if you're a Holmes girl at all, but having recently been watching the Granada Sherlock Holmes TV series, it puts into stark contrast how much more of a dick BBC's Sherlock (Cumberbatch) was. bleurgh. Regarding consumerism and buying vs library and the physical state of the books, I'm a mix. The books I buy are usually the ones my library system doesn't carry, and I'm definitely more inclined to buy if the book is uncommon, out of print, or otherwise niche. And the majority of the ones I own I haven't read yet. It's kind of like building a wine collection. I buy local/independent sometimes, but mostly through Better World Books, so sometimes they come to you already worn.
