I remember this concert CAL JAM I at the Ontario motor Speedway June 1974!

Ritchie did it on purpose so that cameraman could not shoot him during the solo. He was pissed off because they had to start earlier than they had in the contract. That is also the reason why he smashed the camera.

The studio version is even more impressive as the balance of the instruments is better.

Fascinating Rhythm by Gershwin turned to rock! Sound: outdoor festival in 1974 not so good sound unfortunately, still an amazing performance. The Live in London album and the 1975 tour recordings (Graz and Paris) are better audible representations of Deep Purple Mk III. Camerman and Ritchie: Ritchie warned the cameraman to not get between him and the crowd so he's making a point of standing as close to the front as possible. He smashed his guitar into thos camera later on in anger at a number of things. Ritchie was also entaged ecause the organisers tried to force the band to start earlier than their contractually agreed start time (darkness), the concert ran an hour ahead because they had 3 stages on train tracks. Ritchie instructed one of his roadies to set fire to a dummy Marshall stack during the guitar smash. The roadie added a tad too much accelerant and the explosion blew Paicey off his seat (and his glasses off!) and he got burned, deafened the camera man and Ritchie got burned. Jon Lord said the force pushed him back even where he was. The band were rushed away by helicopter to avoid arrest after the gig. The damage was estimated at $10k (approx $56.5k today) and management paid it off.
