I saw Deep Purple live about six times in the early 1970's and they were fantastic every time. The crowd were told not to react by the producer because this was being filmed for TV.

What many these days viewing this don’t realize is that this is not a performance for the audience. It was a recording before a TV audience where the band is performing live and the audience is instructed to remain still and silent as the recording and filming is in progress. Also, you typically acquired tickets without knowing what would be the feature that day, so there was generally no fans or groupies in attendance, it was controlled. Now Deep Purple especially Mk II) was way ahead of their time and as a result many mundanes in the audience would not know what to make of their performance, but the static response of the audience was by design at the venue of the studio fir this live performance for filming. They would be the same for Lawrence Welk, the Supremes, or the Righteous Brothers. That’s just the way it was, the audience instruction and expectations. Deep Purple concerts were a different scene. Few were able to compete with the innovation show to show as the band did not want to replicate a studio performance, but rather improvise as is common in jazz and blues genres. Styles on tour would ebb and flow even within the same set as a result. It was customary for audiences in those days for filming and taping of shows to offer the polite applause as instructed at the end if the performance, just as the director instructed.

At 9:15 you ask about the left hand guitar technique... “Hammer on” & “Pull off” Richie appears to be mostly hammering on from what I could tell. Great reaction vid!✌️😎🎵🎶

Ian Gillan was the first one to play Jesus in Jesus Christ superstar he was also given the nickname the hairy scream. Along with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple were known collectively as the Unholy Trinity and with those 3 bands you can trace the start of heavy metal. As for doing the live version versus the studio version well they never preformed it the same way twice so it's all good 👍

You have to remember this was 1970... at that time we were all raised to compose ourselves at all times. To rock out like what happens now would be totally inappropriate and a punishment would surely follow. This is how the "crowds" we raised to behave. The 70s and 80s snapped the world out of it and these amazing rock masters gave us our freedom to rock!

Listen to the whole Made In Japan Live Album. It is considered by millions of fans and many critics to be the greatest Live Album out of the Era of Epic Live Albums. Purple pumped up Live. It like Purple on Steroids. Highway Star is 3 times as good as the Studio Version and that includes Child In Time, Smoke On The Water, The Mule, Space Trucking and Strange Kinda of Woman. No studio enhancements. Exactly how it was played Live.

And the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (except for when he played the lead to smoke on the water) never played the lead the same way twice. That's all improvisation.

@@nem447 You know all Geniuses are temperamental. Anybody that is that damn good can be hard to work with because they are Perfectionists. Ritchie is much more open and out going in his later years. I believe his wife may be responsible for that because she is a extrovert.

Back in the day the studios often told the crowds not to rock or move etc. They literally had to fold their hands and politely listen. Tough to do with the best heavy metal band this world has seen.

I agree this version is better than the studio version the audience are in a television studio and they have been given strict instructions to stay in their seats and not make noise or they[ll be thrown out
@beawsbiz
@beawsbiz 3 года назад
I can’t agree with that. On this version Ritchie meanders, even makes a mistake and quickly covers it up. Far less structure and composition. On “In Rock” his solo tells the complete story. Respect to all.

Sure someone else said it already, but when you slam notes on a guitar without "picking" them it's basically "legato", an Italian term, dates way back.

It's not just talent and skills, there's a lot of work before being able to present such a song, hours and hours of work. Instead of messing around in the streets with their mate and no purpose when they were young, they were practicing their instruments for hours, days, weeks.... They are not born with that level of music. It's all about work and practicing, give back to Cesar what belongs to Cesar.
