worst part about the challenger disaster, it was entirely preventable. Long before the launch NASA engineers warned that it would most likely go horribly, yet the higher-ups didn't listen.
The challenger explosion was a great shock to those that witness it. From my understanding that teachers class was watching the event as well so I can imagine the shock that they felt when it occured. Finding television footage of the event isn't hard if you are interested in watching it.
One sci-fi story has a resolution that deals with rats being ever present on spaceships and space stations. Without proper maintenance, they’ll eventually chew through any wiring and, well... I would imagine cockroaches are also there

i mean, humanity needs to focus on space travel in the long term, at least to the point of being able to colonize other planets, otherwise we wont survive
