The actor who played monkey king is still alive. He is from a performing artists family which is famous of playing Monkey King. IMHO he is the best Monkey King ever.
Of course he's still alive at only 65 years old lol. And with a background in stage opera performance (similar to Jackie Chan) he could probably still kick most average people's asses😂
@@DATONEGAMER25 I know the mainlanders are gonna hate me for this lol but do you ever plan on doing a reaction for the 1996 Journey to the West and 2002 "Quest for the Sutra" Cantonese versions? They're both uploaded here on YT.
Im no Chinese but this show was also popular in Vietnam back in the 90s-2000s. Around 5-6pm when this show was aired on our TV, My family used to stop everything they were doing and just went to the living room to watch it. Good old memories.
Same although I was born in 2006, I remember before I came to US, when I was like 6 or 7 so, me and my family would sit there every night, chill off while watching this masterpiece. 😂😂😂
I am an overseas Chinese born in the 70s and for my generation, the Wukong lore was imprinted by the animated classic "Havoc in Heaven" - one of SWK's most infamous transgressions before Journey to the West. The other movies we love were Stephen Chow's "Odyssey to the West" non canon adaptations. They fully tell the story of Wukong's growth from a mischievous violent monkey to a trusted protector of Tripitaka.
@@DATONEGAMER25 many books of the monk and the monkey written by different authors before 1592, the story exist hundreds of years before 1592. Wu Cheng'en‘s book is the most popular one
Dragonball Z was inspired by Journey to the West, the character Goku is the pronunciation of Wukong in Japanese. Journey to the West is a novel that was written in the 16th Century. Actually many Japanese manga were inspired by this novel, take Naruto as an example, the shadow clone no jutsu is similar to Wukong's ability which he can turn his hair in to the clone of himself, but they are much weaker than the true self
Ya at 36:52/37:03 the journey to the west novel is from the ming dynasty so nomatter if taken reference from tv shows/movies or chinese opera. It is this first 41:54 . The duplication for his many furs
I LOVE that someone is finally reacting to the 1986 series. We have a saying here, if someone who is Chinese says they don’t recognize the theme, they are not Chinese
I'm Vietnamese and I know this show so well because it was widely broadcasted on TV when I was a kid. 😭 I looked up the outro recently and could remember exactly how the song went almost 20 years later.
Journey to the West was published in year 1592, one of the great fiction novel in China history. Dragon ball Z was polished in 1989 by Akira Toriyama who deeply influenced by Journey to the West. So the gap is around 400 years you have your answer about who is the first.
Well done, looking forward to the next episode. By the way, Journey to the West is a novel of the Ming Dynasty in China. It was completed about 500 years ago. All the images of Wukong come from this (including Dragon Ball).
Btw would love to share a little BTS story since you mentioned, This serie is THE most impactful in China, but was created under extremely difficult situation. The whole 25 episodes were made throughout 5 years. Each actor and actress plays so many roles, you probably can't tell but the Wukong's actor plays more than 10 roles in the whole serie, that's how thin the budget was. The whole serie was recorded by ONE camera and ONE cameraman, yes literally one camera. That's why this serie has so much impact in the Chinese TV industry, the process of making this serie was as difficult as the Journey to the West!
@@DATONEGAMER25 ahhh have u noticed the kongfu performing guy when Monkey King first stepped onto human's land, is the actor of Bajie. Apart from the Master Tang, the 3 disciples have all played many other characters.
@@DATONEGAMER25 The cantonese version is the goat, probably the one with best production/effects though. I think that one should be from around early 2000s
@@jianxiongRaven true but if u like politics and war strategy, brotherhood and loyalty, etc then 3 kingdoms is easier to get into. jttw is kind of like the blueprint for how shonen mangas are structured, so youre right that its probably easier to get into for a modern audience
I am not chinese but this movie is so nostalgic to me. It was probably the first chinese movie that i have ever watched. I have watched it so many times when i was a child.
Monkey King can be considered the superhero for every Chinese children.I love 猴哥 so much,He is filled with justice and hates evil deeply, protecting his master all the way. And he is also kind
Wukong literally means to comprehend the void or to grasp something from nothing. It’s really an extraordinary name with profound meaning without using rarely used Chinese characters.
@@antwango 悟空(wukong)悟 means to understand or comprehend and 空 means empty but also stands for "四大皆空” which is to see through the meaning of life and be desireless
@@TactNightZ I dont understand Chinese but in Blach Myth wukong, the names of all of the Disciples of YellowBrown means the Wu (not) that are completely opposite to the names of all Tan Xuanzang's disciples, since Yeallowbrown is so bitter on winning Xuanzang. I find it so cool
Of course this was first. Westerners don't understand Wukong novel was written in the 1600s. It literally took the western world 400 years to know of this story now. The original Dragonball was literally a parody of the Chinese novel.
你的视频在国内有几十万的播放量了,国内的大家都非常支持你了解中华文化 Your video has already had hundreds of thousands of views in China, and everyone in China strongly supports you in learning about Chinese culture.
由于我们国内很多人无法去外国网站,所以他们没法来支持你,但我想说其实很多人觉得你很有趣,也很感谢你想了解中国文化的心Because many people in China can't go to foreign websites, they can't support you. But I want to say that many people think you are very interesting and thank you for wanting to understand Chinese culture
The Journey to the West is a classic work in China and the Three Kingdoms, the Seven Dragon Balls is influenced by the Journey to the West and began to create, and the Journey to the West is an ancient Chinese novel written in the Ming Dynasty, equivalent to 500 years ago...
As Chinese born in China, I'm just so grateful that people are beginning to show interest in our mythology. The actor 六小龄童 (Liu Xiao Ling Tong) wanted to get closer to the monkeys, he ended up living with one for 6 months. Later on in the story the monkey king acquires great vision like fire (I'm not sure what they translated that into), but in order to get that in his eyes, he put himself in a dark room and used his eyes to follow the burning incense. He ended up with bad vision and glasses. He really dedicated his life for the series.
This series of Journey to the West is legendary! I remember when I was a child I watched them again and again every summer. Although the technology was not good but the characters, plots, customers, music, acting... were just godly.
Fact: It took the Wukong actor few years to walk and behave normally after completed shooting this series film. I heard he get used to act like a monkey and he did it as instinct in his daily life.
FYI they had almost no real money and only 1 cameraman and 1 camera. Also a lot actors/actress had to play multiple characters. They dont know anything about editing and special effects, but just like the story the crew made this timeless masterpiece despite all the difficulties.
I watched it when I was 10yrs in China. It is out of date to me now tbh. But every time the music starts, I always can feel something melting in my heart.😢
Nice! Episodes 2 and 3 are really good. I like the scene where Son is trying to eat food with Chopsticks, and the green screen effect of him in the river where he looks really small in size compared to everything else.
Oh my god, childhood comes flooding back. I remember the days when I was a kid sitting in front of the old TV watching Journey to the West, it was so nostalgic. :>
3 years ago, I got my eight yo son hooked by Wukong via watching this show which I and his dad watched growing up. It is the most classic and famous legend story in China. There were other stories in the similar time published in Ming dynasty too. So many and very good.
The master can be “shifu” in Chinese,as wukong call his teacher, and can be “zhangwo” in Chinese meaning “to master some skills”, as you heard from a translator app I believe, at 29’24
Dragon Ball is based on the same novel as this TV series, Jouney To The West, which is written hundreds years ago, where the concept of "nimbus" first show up
Bro I'm very happy to see foreigners want to understand Chinese culture that makes me so excited! Your work is wonderful! I will follow this series and ur channel❤️❤️
Me too. When I watch shows inspired and with Chinese myths and culture , and when i watch other culture like the west. Its nice someone else is doing the same on the opposite
i used to watch this when we would go to my grandmothers house when I was little, still gives me happy emotions even to this day when I hear the theme song.
The drama Journey to the West is like OLD FRIENDS of America. It means a lot to all Chinese people, just like OLD FRIENDS means a lot to all Americans. So it still rebroadcasted till now, the youngster still feel it interesting even though scenes of latest drama is more magnificent and have good special effects, have more money to shoot. It just contains so much memories of our childhood.
Journey to the West has so many versions. Besides 1986 version, year 1996,2000,2010,2011 version is popular too. 1986 Version is the most popular one because it contained a lot of memories no matter old or young.
@@DATONEGAMER25 ya . The many actors. You think its easy but nots actually not as easy as you think. The mannerism , fighting and stunts as a human is alrdy tough . But to add in monkey manerism .. That stick weapon... 金箍棒
Btw the monkey actor(liu-xiao-ling-tong) is the second son of a traditional wokong acting family. From Chinese opera. Whole life of practice and career. Well-known in china. Every one loves him❤
Really love your reaction in such a natural style. This is a household journey in China and it has influenced Asian cultures. As you've seen from the previous comments, many Chinese audiences saw your reaction from a Chinese youtube website-- bilibili. I'm also one of them that came here to send my support with VPN. Well done! bro. FYI, there is another 'Journey to the west a sequel' filmed in 1999 by the same director. It provided supplement to the journey (They have to go through 81 calamities to get the Buddhist sutras) with better graphic quality.
@@DATONEGAMER25 Yes. Actually, the TV series introduced basic stories of this journey and made it a household story. In my childhood, the deepest impression about the Journey to the West is the mighty monkey king Sun Wukong. However, the original novel of Journey to the West is much deeper and has many plots to ponder. For example, in what way the Jade Emperor would send a monkey to guard the immortal Peach garden? Why master puti, the first shifu of Wukong, taught and endowed him supernatural powers and forbade him to tell anything of him? As the audiences grows, they begin to find more details and thoughts of the whole journey. Black myth: Wukong from the Game Science also tells the stories from it's unique view.
This show was a masterpiece. It had all the master actors / actresses, makeups, costumes, director and producers, etc. plus it was casted by hearts and love of the whole generation. And it is timeless!
Big love from China!By the way,you saw Wukong had bunch of tiny monkeys on his hand in the show, that is one of his classic tricks:he can pull out some fur on his neck, blow it with magic, and the fur will bacome his clone to help him fight, which you can also see it in the video game.😊
I wonder the same.. that's right Lol. I just got that skill in the game where he clones a few of them to help you out during battles.. awesome. This game is amazing and I am learning more on Chinese culture, big win for our Chinese brothers.. keep them coming.
I was thinking of re-watching this show. It's good that you didn't edit much out so I can just watch it all again here. It helps if you create a playlist.
China's 5000 year culture has been forgotten in the world for a long time. Thanks for this game to let people like you know more about Chinese culture. I hope you are interested in journey to the West. This is a national treasure novel in China. It is translated with translation software. There may be some grammatical errors. Please forgive me
For all my Western and Non-Chinese friends watching this Wow ! 😄 You're watching the OG version. Whao ! 👏👍 2:56 All actors for the monkey king *孙悟空 (sún wù kōng)* is pretty well known. Even before the first film , from chinese opera . It's quite hard to portray and act like one , every little detail and mannerism *(you can see more of it as you watch)* I'm guessing the opera wans also does more stunts in real time for the shows *(but that's another topic for discussion again on Chinese Opera)*
The Dragonball was inspired by the journey to the west, so you could see some similar things. Moreover, you found the right version of the journey to the west, which almost all Chinese people watched this version when they were a child. You will have a better understanding of Black myth wukong after watching this.
Nono, 孙sun is no relation with the sun in the sky, but a traditional China family name. Master gave the name Sun to wukong because wukong is a monkey and monkey is 猢狲 hu sun ( the ancient way while now we call monkey 猴子 hou zi)
You said that the Chinese master's pronunciation is particularly accurate. I haven't seen the first episode of journey to the West for a long time, and i had a good time watching your video, thanks~
Karate? No it's more like kungfu with magic/supernatural power. In this episode I love the way SunWukong learned how to speak, to eat, to dress and to act like human. He is very brave and clever, way more smart then other monkeys that's why he can be the monkey king and managed his way to humans' world or even gods'. In this drama SunWukong looks good but according to the book Journey to the West he is actually a bit ugly and scary that's why people are fear of him. I think you are getting bored watching this drama haha, but it's understandable. There's cultural difference. And this drama is designated for all age, to popularize the basic content of the book(which is much more complex and difficult).
I like how often sun wukong gets new clothes. In the first 2 parts he goes from no clothes, to wearing leaves, takes the clothes someone drops when he crosses the water on the raft, steals the old man's shoes, new clothes from the mountain sage when he returns home, armor from the 4 dragon kings, and gets another outfit from being lord of the stables. 😆
When I was young, my dream was to marry Wukong, my hero forever.haha. now I'm a mom, I started to watch the show with my son.... Still enjoy and love it so much as before !
@@DATONEGAMER25 yeah the charm of this show is that even after years we all know that the special effects were poor at that moment, but the history, the roles and the acting are so good making people ignoring this weakness
@@Lamenchine its mind blowing i guess. Back then its just books followed by opera . But now (back then when the show started) , im guessing everyone was amazed by it lorh
I never came from the Wukong game I grew up with 4 different types of Wukong movies and watching them all twice growing up as a Vietnamese, I’ve became a professional at this point 😂
"Journey to the West", also known as "Journey to the West", or "Journey to the West" for short, is the first romantic chapter-by-chapter novel of gods and demons in ancient China's Ming Dynasty. The book has 585,000 words (Shidetang edition) and 100 chapters. It is one of the four great masterpieces of China and one of the four great books. It was written in the middle of the Ming Dynasty in the 16th century, and the author is Wu Chengen of the Ming Dynasty. The book tells the story of Tang Sanzang and his disciples Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, who went to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures. It shows the ancient theme of punishing evil and promoting good, and is a representative work of promoting Buddhism and destroying Taoism. There is also a view that "Journey to the West" is a satirical novel that implicitly satirizes power and officialdom.
I am Chinese,Born in 2005.Almost every Chinese child has watched this TV series with the elderly in their childhood. This TV series was filmed in 1986 . At that time, the shooting team had very little money. The deep meaning of chinese culture is too profound. Many foreigners cant understand the deep meaning, and even English cant translate it perfectly. Thank you for liking Wukong
For my western or non chinese friends 13:24 There's no proper word . Hence they use monster in the sub. But it's more like monster /demon hybrid. I guess you could say it's in an eastern point of view , different from western *(since the word originates from the west)* In chinese it's either 1) *妖怪 (yāo guaì)* or 2) *妖精 [ (yāo jīng)* (15:02/15:44) ] 15:48 : Sub for *妖精 (yāo jīng)* is changed again to evil *"spirit"* *(Notice how in the conversation they used these 2 eng words interchangeably)* Both can be used interchangeably but from what I've noticed from shows or whatever that mentions it or it should be is #1 *妖怪 (yāo guaì)* is more commonly used for *"evil and baddies"* whereas #2 *妖精 [ (yāo jīng)* is more commonly used for those *"good wans"* Monster will translate more towards *怪兽 (guaì shòu)*
Black Myth: Wukong is a story that is elevated in the journey to the West. It tells the story after the journey to the West. Moreover, the monsters in the black mythology also have their origins in the novel. If there is a novel of journey to the West translated in English, it is worth watching. The 86 version of the TV series of journey to the West has not completely filmed the novel, because there are 100 chapters in the novel. Moreover, there is another sequel to this TV series of journey to the west, but the whole novel has not been shot yet.
For reference 108000 li is like 54000km, there was also a saying “One travels 80000li a day by siting still.”. Which sorta makes sense as the length of the equator is roughly 40000km
Yes yes before we get another comment of the hundreds saying 'Who's here bc of BMW', I am indeed here bc of BMW, if people would stop the annoying 'who's here because' RU-vid will be a better place Lol. So I am on episode 2 of this show and I am having a blast, the actor who plays Wukong is hilarious and awesome.. he played it perfectly.
until now , this video has been watched by 128,000 people on bilibili , and we do wish that u can get a bilibili account so we can fully support u ,many folks enjoy watching this cuz it gives them the feeling of a bunch of friends gather together to watch a classic tv series.
It's rare seeing someone do a reaction video for this show. If you're interested in Journey to the West, may I recommend "Monkey" (also known as "Monkey Magic")? It's a Japanese show from 1978 and another beloved adaptation of JTTW. It doesn't follow the original text to a T like this one does, but it's definitely a lot of fun. It also has a catchy theme song.
好多B站的小伙伴,没想到在youtube上竟然像回家了一样。haha,The old works 36 years ago are still so charming。By the way,bro is handsome, especially your eyes。You got my “like”。
You may ask any questions if you don't get some points of this show, since the translation subtitle isn't so good… I believe you've got a number Chinese fans, and fortunately, all the Chinese are fans of Journey to the West and willing to answer your questions!
Ya man . Especially the distance each he travels with 1 somersault. Wth never transalte the 里. 🤣 But some is really no actual eng word like 妖怪/妖精 so closest would be demon and spirit. Bcos theres 怪兽 for monster,恶魔 for demon , 灵魂 for spirit
You should look up [ace vs ace] which version of wukong do you like best? that’s where all the old cast from this show gets back together for a reunion it’s like a whole big event you got the monkey king actor spinning his stick around and everything he still gots his skills
In fact, in order to make it easier for everyone to watch and understand the plot, the current 1986 version of Journey to the West has deleted scenes. Each episode of the real 1986 version of Journey to the West is more than an hour long, not just 40 minutes
