@@hibob4453 was a long time ago that I posted this. But I remember Peter doing an interview about the number of tracks. Also, people in the comments (not that you can trust every source you read). But there’s definitely an interview where Peter talks about how he had recorded this originally without Tim. But then re-did it with Tim included and it added a whole new level with Tim’s resounding bass tone.

Be shook! It's okay. We all have sat in that shook chair. Yes, there a handful of gentlemen who can drop that low. Tim has a resonance, strength and clarity to those notes that really brings you in. Live...he makes your chair jiggle, your chest wiggle, and you feel like your heart's skipping a beat. He saves lots of those low bombs for their concerts. He has been known to short circuit the sound system. I am glad you are enjoying the music and talent of the acapella groups and artists. Lots of people do it, Home Free has mastered it.

All of the background vocals are Peter Hollens. He has an exquisite voice and a huge vocal range. Before he did this version with Tim, he released a version of his own showing himself singing the various tracks that were layered together. He also sang the bass verses as well as those in the baritone ranges. You'd do well to review more of his work.

When I listen to this song I always go back to the fact that it was dwarves who sang this song. I had been having a hard time to find a song that fit in with the vision of dwarves. However, in this song I can easily imagine Peter as a young dwarf before getting that barrel of a chest and the smoke from the forges affect their voice. Tim sounds like a middle-aged Dwarf that is in the prime of his life! Like you said this song does not need musical instruments. After all dwarves while working would use their voices and only the sound of them creating life at their forges!
