The Wellerman brothers had a whaling operation in New Zealand starting in the 1830’s. I think employees were not paid in currency but in imported goods (sugar, tea, rum). Hence waiting on the Wellerman supply ships to arrive with their ‘pay’. As said elsewhere, tonguing was cutting the blubber off the whales, probably on shore, to be rendered into oil.

From what I've heard Nathan Evans covered The Wellerman which actually started the craze of covering it, so Homefree's version etc... Is technically thanks to this man.

That was extremely well-sung. I thought there was a woman's voice in there a couple of times. On the other hand, you can easily hear both lower and higher tones in his generalized voice patterns. It could have been a ready-made track, with the harmony lines built in, I suppose. However, I have a feeling it was all him. Great version of the song, I thought, and you did a great job of reacting. NICE! 😀

I cheated and did some research while this was running. Nathan Evans is a Scot, which accounts for that beautiful accent. Tounging is cutting up whales after they are caught. I can't quite figure out if he is using multiple tracks or if there were others in the background.

Hey Maria! Thank you so much for doing my video request, and I absolutely loved it! Now the term "When the tonguein' is done," can mean one of two things. It can either mean talking, or since this song is about a big whale, he may be talking about whale tongue harvesting. Thanks again for doing my video request!
