I saw nightwish live twice, hope to see them again this fall. Heard their songs countless times. Still, I cried as well hearing this one again. It is SO emotional. (not that it matters, but I´m a 51 y/o guy). This music helps me feel connected to my emotions, and I´m not ashamed of it.

Fantastic reaction considering you did not know what its about so now I will brief you on it . Tuomas -Founder. keyboard & composer wrote this about the anger he recieved when the band fired Tarja (1st singer) . the 1st part is a boy singing . this song is an on stage suicide because he was so depressed. at the end when they were sitting on the drum platform the words Floor was singing were things his parents told him while he was going through this. & at the end Marco (bass) & Emppu(Guitar) both went up & stood beside Tuomas as a sign of support .

Count me as one of those guys! I am an ex-college football player, offensive lineman, at 6'6" & 350 lbs, and this song brings tears to my eyes every time! Especially at the very end when you see Tuomas singing.... "Search for beauty, find your shore Try to save them all, bleed no more" It gets me everytime!
@darkiee69
@darkiee69 3 года назад
To understand the story you need to know the backstory. Nightwish was started by Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja, their first singer. In 2005, after the recording of the "End of an era" dvd Tarja was fired thru a letter given to her by Tuomas, but it was a band decision. The letter was also posted on the bands homepage at the same time. Marko had told Tuomas "It's me or her". This song is about the aftermath thru Tuomas eyes. A piece in five parts. 1. White lands of Empathica.: Boy soprano (Guy Elliot). "The end, the songwriter's dead, the blade fell upon him" It's the end of an era, Tuomas feels dead inside, he was the one that handed Tarja the letter. The white lands of Emphatica is a place in Stephen Kings "Dark Tower" series. 2. Home: "A poet without a rime, a widowed writer torn apart by the chains of hell" Tuomas got writers block, he's lost his musical "wife", his muse, and was fighting depression and doubt. "My home was there and then, those meadows of heaven. Adventure filled days one with every smiling face" The bands beginning, before the troubles started. 3 The Pacific: "On the shore, se sat and hoped under the same pale moon who's guiding light chose you, chose you all" If I remember it right Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja was having a barbecue at night when they decided to start a band together. The operatic part Floor sings was originally sung by the same boy soprano who sings the intro. When Floor joined she told Tuomas that she could sing that. He decided to keep the intro but let Floor sing that part. The spoken words are read by a boy named Tom Williams. Both him and Guy Elliot were members of Reigate St Mary's Choir School. 4. Dark passion play: This is about the reactions from fans and media where everyone blamed Tuomas even tho it was a band decision. He was ripped apart, even the Finnish prime minister had an opinion. 5. Mother and Father: Tuomas took refuge at his parents house for a while, these are some of the things they told him during that time. Tuomas was inspired by the short story "The pit and the pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe when he wrote this masterpiece. The first words are "The end", the last words are "The beginning". It's the end of an era and the start of a new. When you see Marko and Emppu close to Tuomas at the end it's a thing they have that started when this song was new. Tuomas feelings where still raw so they supported him at the end of the song. Tuomas had chosen to have Anettes song cut out of the mix in his earpiece at the shows. This was 11 years after the events, so he's mostly over it now. And the birds flying past on the screen, ravens. Edgar Allan Poe wrote "The pit and the pendulum" that inspired Tuomas to write this masterpiece. What else did Poe write; The Raven.

This right here shows that when Tuomas writes, the instrument he is writing for isn't his keyboard, he isn't writing for Emppu or Marko's guitars, nor Kai/Jukka's drums or Troy's... everything. Not even for Floor's incredible vocals. No. It's US, WE are the instrument that Tuomas plays so beautifully.

The Poet and the Pendulum is, as far as I'm concerned, Tuomas's magnum opus. It's 100% real, raw emotion, and Floor injects every ounce of it straight into our limbic system. Unless you're just really closed off from your emotions you basically can't help but tear up, especially once you know what the lyrics mean to Tuomas.

11:37 "I'm so gross, I'm sorry guys." First of all, that was me the first time. And still is on the inside when I hear it now. Secondly, that's why a significant portion of us are here. You've no doubt read other comments explaining this song's meaning. 16 years gone and it still feels fresh. For extra credit, see if you can spot Emppu legit checking on Tuomas, right there on stage, to see if he's okay. EDIT: Third, now that you've done 2/3 of the trifecta, you NEED to do "The Greatest Show on Earth," live at Tampere.

I cried with you dear, having to fire Tarja someone he loved did a real number on Tuomas. The band all did it, but he was painted the bad guy and devoted Nightwish fans were hating him. Spitting on his grave as it were. He said he killed himself in this song not to do it in real life. No other vocalist I have ever heard is better at pushing emotions into listeners than Floor Jansen, my Queen. Thankfully most of the time she is pushing out love and bliss. You did great on this, I hope you continue your Nightwish journey. So much more out there. New subscriber here.

Now that you've heard it. Now learn the backstory. Then watch it again. You'll understand this is Tuomas metaphorical suicide so he didn't have to do it for real. When ever I see Tuomas sing along in mother and father. Guts me everytime. Knowing that's what his mother actually said to him. Hits even harder

I'm not a prolific commenter but I must say a thing or two about your spectacular reaction. It was priceless to witness the moment when you began to appreciate the gravity of the lyrics and the artistic majesty of this song. For me listening to it the first time resonated so strongly as someone who has worked through depression and come out the other side stronger, that I needed multiple pauses just to collect myself and reflect. Tuomas is not just a good songwriter, composer and musician, he is someone special. A very few people can turn a near tragedy into great art.The feelings and emotions he imparts to many of his compositions make Nightwish songs something to anticipate and savor. Well enough rambling by this old geezer. Thank you for your thoughtful and passionate reaction! You have of course gained me as a new subscriber. Be well and Ciao!

Ashley, it is totally okay that you cried because so many of us have cried during this song! Especially with the knowledge of the meaning behind it. It's incredibly sad, and they made you feel it. I'm actually kinda glad you did the reaction without researching because you could experience the REAL raw emotion this song creates. I feel like those who research first expect sadness, so they react accordingly, and you didnt. You still felt the melancholy, and that right there sums up everything you need to know about them.

the epics ( Ghost Love, this one, and greatest show ) are fantastic don't get me wrong, but they really are the tip of the iceberg with what you can expect from a Nightwish song. it's all over the place, which is why I love it. It will get more powerful each time you hear it, especially if you take time to read the lyrics. Tuomas writes sagas often referencing to other songs he's written in the past. No verse chorus verse chorus 10 more times music around here :)

Welcome back to Nightwish! Don't turn it up as far as it will go, it gets louder :) It's a boy soprano at the beginning, just like the titles for "Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy", with Sir Alec Guiness (Umm, to old for you maybe). The acceleration at the beginning, woohoo. The Pendulum, inspired from the film "The Pit and the Pendulum". The outfit :) Intimidating, but so nice, welcome to the Floor experience. Each song is diffferent. This was an ultra-personal song written by Tuomas on keyboards, notice how the guitarist, Emppu goes to check on him, and later, with the bass player, Marco, giving emotional support. The ominous brass, 3 minutes and counting, check the time in 3 minutes... Acceleration again, Marco shouting, softened by Floor who gets louder. Floor sings the words of Tuomas's mother: "Be still my son, you're home. When did you become so cold... All you need is feel my love". Watch Tuomas, he is barely holding it together. Marco moves over to join Emppu. Ending with the Siren.

Absolutely love you. I can just see you going into a Nightwish show ... "Young lady, what's in the large box?" "Oh, those are my tissues!" "No problem, go ahead." We all get it.

I cry every time I watch this video. EVERY TIME. A beautiful, wonderful, masterful lesson in how music affects your soul.

Finally someone who experiences that song the same way as me. DON'T EVER stop the tears and hold the emotions from Floor. Nightwish music is to be not only heard, but felt with the heart and soul. Immediately subbed :D

If you were confused, the vocal at the beginning is a choir boy.

This song hits so much harder when you read into why tuomas wrote this,and having the lyrics on screen really drives it home. He essentially killed himself in this song so that he wouldn't in real life.his catharsis.

This reaction is like the perfect emotions guide on this song. The joy, the sadness, the anger, the desperation, the relief, all are clearly visible on your face.
