A little clarification Eric. Epica is a Dutch band, Floor is also Dutch, but Nightwish is a Finnish band.

I concur with you taking a peak at Nightwish Wembley concert…Shudder before the Beautiful (the show opener) and 7 Days to the Wolves…both outstanding songs.

Mark co-founded Floor's first band 'After Forever' and they used to be in it together, so this how they got the cheat-code. Mark is the Growler and rhythm guitar player, the Drummer is called Arien (pronounced almost the same as Arjen) Epica songs are written by the band as a whole. Simone does most of the lyrics and Mark does a lot of the base compositions and I think Coen (the keyboard player) does a lot with the orchestral bits. That said, all of them are well versed in musical theory and make (parts of) the compositions of songs.

Oh I'm looking forward to it when you do "the Poet and the Pendulum" and give your analysis. A journey through Tuoma's world of thought in his depression. This is an absolute masterpiece. The song itself is not only lyrically, but also composed in the same way as a full-blown depression works with all the stadiums.

Floor and Simone also sing opera together in this show - Stabat Mater Dolorosa!!! Else, I am pretty sure you'll love "Kingdom Of Heaven" I, II & III - yes, it's a trilogi.

This is from 2013 and Simone was 3 months pregnant. This song was 2hrs-ish mark and still has the stamina to still rocking it! When Floor started singing at age 16 her 1st band she joined was After Forever and Mark Jansen was the co founder of that. Mark & Floor have a lot of history in the past

Hi You should react to these two singing Stabat Mater Delorosa. The only thing wrong is that it's not long enough. Floor also sings O Mio Bambino Cara and I really like the one she did at a Revamp concert. Liliac the family band does Symphony of Destruction. You should react to Within Temptation with The Black Orchestra. Mother Earth is awesome. You should react to Within Temptation ft. Anneke van Giersbergen Somewhere and also ft.Tarja Turunen singing Paradise. At the Revamp concert the crowd was quiet during the performance . Mark also was involved with another band after Epica . I am going to be very specific on The Poet and the Pendulum. The reason people are recommending that you do research is that it is VERY, VERY, personal to Tuomas. So personal that he has said in the past that he would tell the sound guy NOT to send the vocals to his in ears when they perform it live. If you don't know the background it simply is not possible to fully appreciate the lyrical content. Great reaction here, by the way.

Remember that Nightwish is Finish not Dutch. There are great Dutch metal bands and singers, but metal is a minor genre in Holland while it is the biggest genre in Finland.

Epica composed this because they write orchestra in their music.. and uses orchestra in their music.. That is why this whole 3 hour masterpiece is so good! In all my almost 52 years I have never heard a metal band that has that perfect balance

another great example of the metal band with the Orchestra is from this same Retrospective concert Epica Design Your Universe you feel the whole power of the band and also the crescendo of the Orchestra is amazing. the beginning buildup is also breathless.

you can tell watching that Floor is taking her cues from Simone. she fully gets this is Epica's night, and she's just there to contribute, not try and take over. by all means, jump straight into the deep end, Mr Man. i recall another reactor introduced NW to their significant other by showing them "The Greatest Show On Earth", live at Tampere. like taking a virgin to a Roman orgy. imagine for a moment, Tuomas has written a 24 minute epic about the creation of the Universe, and the Evolution of Life on Earth. what sort of tapestry do you think that will paint for you? or "The Poet and The Pendulum", live at Wembley Arena. a 14 minute, 5 part story of the emotional turmoil and furious backlash Tuomas faced when they fired the legendary Tarja in 2005? we often suggest you prepare for that by way of "Nemo", "Ever Dream", and "Storytime" from Wacken. let your taste buds process each unique flavor of Tuomas's cooking before he overwhelms you with his most epic creations. if you believe you can handle the big guns, step up to the target and pull the trigger baby. What I like most of this video is that everyone on stage is having a blast, the band members, the conductor and the majority of musicians of the orchestra, the singers of the choirs. They are enjoying themselves. Bear in mind that the orchestra and the choir performs mostly classical music and maybe from time to time some musical themes or scores, they still are in a way, but here combined with metal. I think it is a welcome interlude in their experience as a musician. EDIT: I wrote above comment mid reaction, I didn't know then that you were going to talk about the commitment of the orchestra and the conductor.

Another great reaction. I so love the depth of your analysis. I am normally one of those guys to say wait on doing Poet and Pendulum or Greatest Show on Earth but you definitely have the experience and knowledge to jump right in and do it justice. Just do some background on Poet so that you get the full emotional impact of that masterpiece. I would recommend doing Dead Boy's Poem from Buenos Aries and maybe Song of Myself from Wacken next though. For your next Epica Kingdom of Heaven Pt 3 from Omega Alive or back to this concert and Design Your Universe and Chasing the Dragon.

I initially liked this reaction, but I am now reconsidering. "There are two guys...", "standing on platforms...". I have rewatched this video multiple times until this point, and I never saw Mark Jansen, the rythm guitarplayer to the viewers left (and most emphatically not the drummer, which makes you sound underprepared), stand on the platform. He put one foot on it once, as far as I can see, which does not make him taller. I also want to add that the lighting is quite frenetic but mostly centered on the middle of the stage where the singers and the drummer are, plus a small portion of the orchestra. Of course Floor and Simone seem to have more stage presence. They are the stars of this video, plus the drummer and some members of the orchestra. From this video, I wouldn't to be able to pick Mark, Isaac, Coen and Rob out of a lineup. Hard to have a stage presence on a video when you are barely recognizable... And there is also the problem that the map is not the terrain, the subjective viewpoint of the camera chosen for this little sequence is not the same as the subjective views of most of the audience, and you have absolutely no idea of how the audience in front of the bassplayer was reacting to him. Maybe they were going crazy about him, so he got up on the platform briefly to show off. But if you as video editors do not recognize this, you are going to get this wrong. You need to set it up with shots of the audience in front of him going crazy beforehand. Most interested to see when you can put Mark on a platform with both legs. He is a university trained psychologist who can command attention when he wants. But most of the time he is an introverted musical genius who does not need or want spotlights. Cut from the same cloth as Tuomas from Nightwish.

I get you are just going to play what you want when you want OK however before you do nightwish the poet and the pendulum you need to investigate what the songs about or you will be going a lot "what did they say" just saying, one of the best songs I ever heard old rock and roller here unique God bless

It’s interesting you wonder if there was space for another person, how about 3 female ‘metal’ singers? You e already investigated Ayreon so why not give Valley of the Queens a try. Maybe not long enough for an analysis but worth a listen.

Little slip you had, "These dutch bands" Epica is but Nightwish is Finnish, has Dutch lead singer and Scottish multi instrumentalist.

Everything I would have said about this song and band has already been covered in other comments. So, I'll just recommend another Dutch symphonic band called Within Temptation. The lead singer in Sharon Den Adel. Ice Queen is a good one to start with, and one of my favorites. These two beautiful singing goddesses have been long-time friends; even flat mates for awhile. Check out them singing Stabat Mater Dolorosa from this same tour to hear pure operatic, gorgeous singing with more of that dichotomy as well, from both of them. This was an anniversary special show with full orchestra. I wish Nightwish would do it for their next big anniversary. It's pretty cool.

Very clear and concise analysis once again - thoroughly enjoying it. I'll keep this short but I thoroughly recommend another Simone/Floor duet from the same gig. It's called 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa' by Pergolesi who knew he was dying when he wrote it sadly. A bit of a departure from the norm but I just know you appreciate diversity in music ( as long as it has worth to it) - I wish you all the best 👍 😀

Floor and Simone goes way back and visited each others band more than once. They are old friends from their younger days - they are both completely awesome stage performers as you pointed out. And together on stage, they shines and fits perfectly together enjoying themselves so intense that it always affects the audience. I have experienced them together a couple of times - they are so genuine and completely crazy good in their duets. Back in the days, there were one more of those phenomenal female singers that toured with them - we get back to that later on.. Great reaction - your insight is always a learning lesson 👍

I agree. Metal with an orchestra is awesome. One of my favorite bands Leprous has a cellist on most songs (and performs live with them). Also adds other orchestra elements often.

Hi Eric, Not only metal goes perfectly with an orchestra, and adds so much more, but also with progressive rock you also get real pearls of music. I think you might know Anathema? They are from Liverpool and started out as a doom-metal band (I'm not a fan of that period), but evolved into progressive rock . They really live for the music. Unfortunately they are currently (due to Covid) on an indefinite hiatus. I really hope they come back! Based on your comments I would definitely recommend the live performance of "A Simple Mistake". The song starts quite calmly, supported by the strings in the orchestra, and then halfway through it grows into a great cresendo of strings, drums and electric guitars. Truly a song that rises above all that is average. Although I am a big Nightwish fan, this band certainly has a special place in my heart. Lol, you’re beginning to understand why we Nightwish fans call Floor the Valkyrie goddess or the beast, her stage persona is rarely challenged and unequaled, as you have seen she grabs hold of your soul and goes fifty shades of Bruce Lee on it leaving you begging for more. the zenith and the retrospect shows are 2 very different shows, the zenith show was a "normal" show on their european tour in 2017 iirc, the retrospect show was a special anniversary show recorded in 2012, 10 years after the band was formed

Eric, do you realize that the orchestra and choir needed so much space on stage that there wasn't enough room left to drive around with the keyboards. By the way, Simone was pregnant during this anniversary concert and couldn't do her normal windmill/headbang. If you want to add another great voice to Floor Jansen, check out Anneke van Giersbergen. Check-out Ayreon - 'Valley of the Queens' featuring Floor Jansen, Anneke van Giersbergen and Marcela Bovio trio. A second fine example of great Dutch symphonic metal bands is 'Within Temptation' with Sharon den Adel as lead singer. They also gave a great anniversary concert with a professional orchestra and singing group. Sharon sang a duet with Anneke van Giersbergen on the song 'Somewhere'.
