in the attack on Convoy ON 92 it was the British convoy rescue ship SS Bury that was equipped with high-frequency direction finding, a type of radio direction finder, not as you rightly pointed out a destroyer. The convoys naval escorts were the flower class corvettes HMCS Algoma, Arvida and Shediac and HMS Bittersweet, there was also the cutter USCGC Ingham and the destroyer USS Gleaves.

Sabaton - Midway is the shortest song. only 2 minutes and 30 seconds. And it is one of my favorites
@alithanna
@alithanna 3 года назад
It may be the shortest song, but much longer with context. Aa Indy mentions in the history channel episode, the outcome was decided in roughly 30 minutes. Had the Japanese done better reconnaissance or repaired the damaged carrier from the Coral Sea, things could have been different as well. The Americans, on the other hand, did have their repaired carrier on hand. It was clearly the death knell for the mighty battleships since the two opposing fleets weren't even in visual range, much less within the range of the big guns.
@Deilwynna

@@alithanna it would also have been good for japan if they had consolidated their squadrons so like shoukaku who was in drydock for repairs after the battle of coral sea but had most of her planes still available but zuikaku was out of action due to no planes and the 4 japanese carriers that participated in the battle of midway didnt have full squadrons.

Even in Germany at that time going on a submarine was voluntary, from what I was told. It was heavily advertised in the Navy as the most heroic job and the one that would get you all the ladies but it was still voluntary. My grandfather got offered a submarine position but he knew it basically meant 100% assured death so he refused. His friend on the other hand like the thought of being such an amazing hero and unfortunately never came back.

In the movie they used the U.S.S. Kidd, a Fletcher-class destroyer, while in the book it's a Mahan-class destroyer. There may be only six years between these two types, but that is a very long time given the speed of the development during the war.

Agree with you both on the music and the video. :) There is an older fan-made video of this track which is better, with clips from other submarine movies. Wolfpack is one of Sabaton's older songs, but still one of my favorites. While radar was uncommon in WW2, asdic (the name for sonar at the time) wasn't - and in fact the Royal Navy had many corvettes equipped with it on anti-submarine duty on convoy escort. The Bury referenced in the song was one of them, but its equipment failed and it wasn't able to provide warning to the 2 American destroyers (Gleaves and Ingham) which were also on the escort. Despite that the actual losses of the convoy weren't that heavy, and the Bury wasn't sunk. A little artistic license by Sabaton. :)

Hey I just found your channel, your reactions are great! I'm a historybuff too, currently I actually study it in university. You should react to Sabaton's En Livstid I Krig (Live - The Great Tour - Gothenburg). Its an EPIC AF live gig and even if its not a story telling music video, it's still magnificent and emotional video. And be sure to turn the subtitles on if and hopefully when you watch it. Sabaton has an English version of this song, but the directly translated lyrics in Swedish are so much more meaningful. If you wanna do research (or just to point out), the song is about the Thirty years' War in Europe between 1618-1648 which was a very bloody one and particularly in the modern day Germany area in some areas even 2/3 of the whole population died. Greetings from Finland btw!

oops be careful on these comments... lol the USS KIDD DD661 is literally 45 mins from my house and its current configuration is from its post WW2 refit for service in the Korean war...The events of the movie are set in February 1942. The first Fletcher class vessels however were not commissioned into service until June 1942. there were no Fletcher destroyers used in the time period of the Wolfpack movie or in the battle of the Atlantic. Fletcher class destroyers were used in the Pacific specifically. Also the destoyers used against wolfpacks in the atlantic were of the Mahan class which look like this upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/ff/USS_Flusser_(DD-368)Jun44.png so the radar cradle and other items I noticed were because it looked off to me.... that saying.... The long-range Fletcher-class ships performed every task asked of a destroyer, from anti-submarine warfare and anti-aircraft warfare to surface action.[5] They could cover the vast distances required by fleet actions in the Pacific and served almost exclusively in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, during which they accounted for 29 Imperial Japanese Navy submarines sunk

The fletcher class was the first destroyers to have radar and that is the class of DD used in the movie. The incident in the movie with a german submarine right next to the Destroyer is also historically accurate and based on a few events such as the real-life clash between the U.S.S. Borie and U-boat U-405. On November 1, 1943 and also on point-blank 1942 encounter between a German U-boat and the Canadian destroyer, HMCS Assiniboine. That ended with the U-boat sinking after a furious close-up gun battle. "They were literally blasting each other with pistols, rifles, revolvers." Laco says. "The cook even came out of the galley and threw an empty case of Coca Cola bottles down the submarine hatch." The movie based on the C.S. Forester’s 1955 novel The Good Shepherd is actually fairly historically accurate but unfortunately not a great watch.

Good of you to take the "boring stuff" before the movie. One thing though, the Catalinas (and other spotter planes) weren't really feared for seeing submarines under the water. They were feared because WW2 submarines weren't capable of staying under all the time. Underwater running was on limited batteries, they had limited air and were much slower submerged than if running on diesels on the surface. If a submarine needed to quickly redeploy to catch a target they had to run on the surface and thus were at risk of being spotted and later in the war also attacked from the air. They often also launched torpedoes while surfaced to better see what was going on. So if a plane spotted them the convoy could be warned by radio to change course, increase speed and keep better lookout to hopefully avoid or at least start anti-submarine runs faster. The latest and greatest German submarines did have snorkels so they could get air while just under the surface, but they were much too few and much too late.
@BrokenAngelWings
@BrokenAngelWings 3 года назад
Actually, the British developed the ASDIC (Anti Submarine Detection Investigation Committee) in 1939. It's a predecessor of the sonar and is as far as I'm informed the biggest factor why so many U-boats were sunk. The problem was, the System was useless at first since the U-Boats attack while they were on the surface at night, meaning the System couldn't pick them up. In 1943 was the Radar introduced to ships meaning attacks above the water line didn't work that good anymore. So they had to attack while they were submerged which resulted that the ASDIC could pick the U-Boats up and lead the destroyer to them.

I just got this video in my recommend, nicely done video. Little known fact they tried to compile a series of defense runs of cargo across the English channel, this is the defense force sent to defend that cargo, not much were really issued to the defenders which caused a high attrition raite, it was so bad that anyone who was supposed to deliver shipments to the allies were all voluenteers and often the Merchant Marines lead these ships in convoy with Naval Destroiers and coastal defense ships when applicable. While the video cant chronologically cover the mass of the "Eventful" attacks on those convoys, there were several historical moments that are true in the movie, submarines would surface next to destroiers as to avoid being in the effective firing range of the destroiers gun pods allowing the crew to attempt eaither boarding actions, use of the main gun (a tactic still widely used in WW2 left over from WW1), and also to cause other ships to avoid shooting at them while they recharged there oxygen tanks when they pushed there subs for too long and the oxygen for the tanks were low (needed oxygen for the crew and the engine obvioustly). These dangerous moves proved further problematic when you had a chance to "Lock up" a submarine with the keel of the destroyer and the crews duked it out via the weapons on hand. On one major occasion in the movie you will notice this "Lock up" where the crews are blasting away at each other at point blank range, ruthlessly trying to cut down the enemy numbers so they can break free. The event was true, according to a engagement a submarine got stuck to a American destroyer's keel and was tearing holes in the hull: The U-boats crew pushed out of the ship and were so close that the main gun wasnt capable of turning and switched to mounting a pintle MG-34 and varrious pistols to enguage the American Sailors, the sailors were equiped with only pistols, as the German crew fought to free the ship the Americans went to town on that sub, while German crew members went up the ladders apparently the cook who didnt have a fire-arm came onto the deck and threw a crate of empty coka-cola bottles down the ships ladder hatch and sent all the climbing crew down to the bottom of the ladder, lucky on the German subs side the ship came free, tearing a hole threw 3 bulk-heads on the destroier and quickly did a crash dive with all crew relatively ok. The damage the destroyer sustained was drastic and she was listing so they shifted the crew accross all remaining ships and the destroyer went down in silence. Submarines are a dangerous threat to shipping around the world, and those who brave the terrors of the deep, can bring forth wrath and destruction no sailor has ever the mind to prepair for. When submarines surfaced, the destroyers would blast anything and everything at such a small target to score hits, a hole in the hull means the submarine is killed, but its hard as you need to hit a target that's low in the water with the water defending it more then people think, thats why "Depth-Charges" and "Bomb-Mortars" are used to hit the subs in the water where they hold the keen advantage in the strike. You see sky versions dropped by PBY-Catalina. Also I got to talk to someone who was working on the new tech "radar", the problem was the radar was designed to find surface to sky targets, what your looking for is "Sonar": Sonar was the method of using acoustic searches to pick up sound kinda like a dolphin, when someone ricochet the sound it comes back as a frequency then is picked up on a later blip, it was drastically slower then modern ones, I think the delay between sending was half a second, then it was at least 1 to 1.5 seconds for the blip to mark on screen, the problem was this detected anything, and so it was paired to a person who was using a special listening gear who was listening for a "Screw" of the ships turbine spinning using another sound tracking device. They used a surviving US Destroyer for this film, the destroyer can be seen as a museum ship in NY, s he was one of the WW2 ships saved for the time in service in her stock configuration of the end oft he war, she was upgraded in 1944 and mainly kept all her defensive and offensive armaments the same

I'd like to state, the guy I talk too is really old a WW2 vet, he said he had felt cursed for his time cause of his work, any ship he worked on for testing and feedback of the system, when he switched ships that prior ship was hammered hard in the pacific. His sad face really spoke of the sheer thought that the Navy really believes there crew mates are brothers threw anything. A salute to these brave crews, and to the hardships they endure in service. May those lost rest in peace and be honored for there sacrifice, and those who lost there brothers and sisters in arms, family or anything else, my heartfelt wishes and a salute to all in the armed forces, no matter there country. War is hell and knows no equal.

also they did have a torpedo skip off the side of a destroyer, call it a brown alert to the crew though, because they didnt get allerted to the sub attack till the thing skipped off the hull
@mysteriousspartan9317
@mysteriousspartan9317 3 года назад
I know people keep complaining about how the sub pulled up next to the ship and started firing it's main cannon and how they say that's not real they wouldn't do that well actually they will because using that cannon is easier to operate and maybe they ran out of torpedoes so that was their last resort it's actually not uncommon for subs to do that because launching a torpedo is not easy to do and can be avoided by enemy ships if they have an experienced crew and also it's more effective if you can believe it or not

Half the people in this comments section are complaining about Greyhound, which is a movie. It is not NECESSARY to be historically accurate to have a good war movie. Greyhound is not supposed to be like Das Boot. Quit complaining about a U-boat surfacing, when it gets hit by depth charge. Accept that it is movie

Not only that but most Uboat attacks were actually conducted at night via their main guns which yes a flack 88 would have been useless against say a destroyer or even a cruise let alone a battleship, but compared to say the soft skin of a cargo ship which has in reality only an inch of not even armor but just steel and so even flack rounds could punch straight through the hull of a ship and would detonate inside of the ship causing severe damage and what’s worse is things like munitions or fuel tankers which would have over at hundred tons of fuel where a single shot into its hull would basically be enough to destroy the ship and even damage any thing or kill anyone near the explosion as shrapnel and bits of ships and rivets fly everywhere hitting sailors and windows, and whilst torpedo attacks weren’t that uncommon, the ranges you have to be in order to get a successful hit would be the same distance as a football pitch, ie right next to the target due to the unreliable nature of torpedoes where In the pacific there was one instance where a torpedo did a 180 and nearly destroyed its own vessel, and again if those who are not aware of what a torpedo hit is like, it’s as if you’ve been thrown into the air as the explosion causes the ship to quite literally bend until the ship can’t take and more and simply snaps in half, or the torpedo causes a massive pressure wave potentially killing any poor soul within twenty meters of the point of impact and so in order to prevent torpedo hits the British would add space armor so when a torpedo did hit it wouldn’t actually hit the hull itself but the belt armor instead, also the British utilized a weapon system known as hedgehogs where it replaced the single massive depth charge for smaller one pound bomblets where they would be loaded onto a rack of about twenty, so you’d have in total twenty pounds of high explosives which was smaller that the typical 400 pounds explosive drums, which were devastating when they hit their target, however hit probability wasn’t very high and so the British followed the tried and true means of warfare ie throw enough shit at a wall hopefully some of it should stick, ie rather than drop one high explosive barrel why not spread it out over a much wider area, allowing for a much wider area of effect, also for those who are un aware, the boxy turret looking thing on top of British warships are actually anti aircraft mines

Radar was a thing however it was very very very early in its development where the basic means of detection was through sonar as well as acoustics systems where a German would listen rather than watch where an enemy ship was and would more or less hear where the enemy was, and whilst yes radio or wireless communication was possible again they tended to be very unreliable and very simple, and the only ones with adequate or even the most advanced systems were the British which had the best radar systems in the world and was given to the Americans via a passenger liner in a paper envelope,

Not. Happen. Destroyers, even a frigate or corvette can put them on the bottom with like one hit, surfacing anywhere near one would be a death sentence.

the destroyer they used in the movie looks like a fletcher class. i don't believe there were too many fletcher class destroyers in the atlantic fleet they should be Gleaves class for the most part along with benson class the side profile. is wrong. also the ship number, which would be a fletcher class is a nonexistent number the destroyers that would have been 548 and 549 were canceled

I’m know Americans will not believe me but the American admiralty because they didn’t listen to the British and if we said a U-boat was in a very specific place as we could triangulate their positions even before we broke enigma and the Americans didn’t blackout which just illuminated the silhouettes of ships making them easy to spot and calculate everything the Germans needed to kill it so lots of ships got sunk just off the cost of America and yes you were right about the radar for the most part but a few British ships did have radar and I think the German submariners were more afraid of the Avro Shackleton because imagine you’re looking out trying to spot ships in the dead of night then suddenly two huge lights turn on and light up the sub and the lights get closer and closer that is lay lights for you they were automated lights that tracked ships by radar to help bombardiers see and the lights were set up to converge when the the bombs were to be dropped so it made it easy to blow the ship out the water and the Shackleton is an Avro aircraft so you know it’s good

@OldSkuleNerd
@OldSkuleNerd 3 года назад
thank you for your correction, unfortunately in WW1 the Wolfpack strategy was implemented with great success with Groups of six Uboats under the command of their individual captains but group movements and target selection was under a single captain within the group. When Karl Dönitz took over Uboat operations in the middle 1930's he wanted to expand the wolfpack strategy to all boat controlled by Central command this was attempted twice: once in Oct 1939 and then again in June 1940 both in utter failure. but instead of letting the original wolfpacks operate under a captain and a group of 6 uboats Karl Dönitz just released them to be single units but would attack in groups of available uboats in a found convoy.
@eliasdh96
@eliasdh96 3 года назад
@@OldSkuleNerd you sure are right there, they originally operated in groups of 6, well the song is about the ww2 wolfpacks and i just wanted to point out, that in ww2 the thinking of a group taktik was denied and a more "lone" way of u boat tactics was used 😉🤟

That wasn't with radar. That was a sonar scan ran by the destroyer. Most destroyers did have sonar or at least hydrophone arrays at the time, especially the ones running the escort missions, and it wasn't rare exactly. However, it wasn't very good.
@OldSkuleNerd
@OldSkuleNerd 3 года назад
I know the display was of a hydrophone active sonar display but my comment was that the green line display wasn’t developed for sonar until the 50’s sonar in the 40’s was audio only with the operator determining bearing based on the direction of the hydrophone... and the hydrophone was not effective unless the destroyer slowed to under 5 knots.... also the radar antenna shown on the destroyer was no available on a destroyer until late 1944 World War II and not in the Atlantic
