My grandfather was in love with a Scottish grandmother in his 80s. He brings Dutch gin and cholade springels and cheese and goes home with Scotish Wiskey every month. He says Scottish people are a lot like the Dutch. English people are a bit different. Proud that at his age he travels a lot to Scotland for love.

Watching all the videos where people from all over the world reacting about The Netherlands, makes me feel kind of special. Also funny how some think about the things they react to. Born in The Netherlands it is all so normal to me. And actually we Dutch wonder about things from around the world too. Why do it the hard way where there is a much easier way, like using a bike to use for transportation where it was actually build for. When I was in the USA to work at a Summer Camp, we had lunch. I got myself a slice of white bread, put some butter in it and then peanut butter and chocolate sprinkles. All of a sudden I had about 50 children around me and they all said: “I want to see you eat that…” And I did and enjoyed. Two days later all these 50 children were doing the same and enjoyed it too.

I put one drop of mayonaise on my peanut butter sandwich. Americans are fond of peanut butter jelly bread. Brrrr..., the thought alone makes me wanna puke. It gives me nightmares about me being forced by Trump Inc. to chew and swallow Jellyfish 24/7.

To add to this, only Limburg (the province she highlights about the vlaai) and Brabant (the province north of us, which you might know from the New Kids movies, although they are more popular in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany) have a soft G, because of Spanish, French and German influences.

The term skirt day comes from France. It’s a movie, “La Journée de la jupe”. The word was introduced in the Netherlands in 1996 by author Martin Bril. He was a bit of a sexist. It’s not an official day, it’s an observation. It’s a day that suddenly a lot of woman decide to wear a skirt. So skirt day can only be established after the fact. The apple syrup she mentioned. She called it stroop, but that’s stroop is made of sugar. Not of apples. And putting cheese on apple syrup isn’t typical Dutch. It’s typical for the province she coming from. The cheese the use is originally Limburger, also called Hervé. The Dutch have a lot of different cookies. The word cookie comes originally from the Dutch word koekje. There is also lot of different kind of candies. More variety than in other countries.

The dutch accent is more a kind of clarity of tone. I can always recognize it no matter what language they're speaking. There's often also a lot of "uh..." when the sentence stalls out and they're thinking of the next thing they're going to say. You see that a lot in sports interviews.

She’s a student so she may do things differently than the average dutch individual. Three kisses is only with family or friends and it’s not necessary. You don’t often do it with strangers. There you give a handshake. We indeed cycle everywhere in every weather but we also take public transport or the car. Helmets are on the rise, especially by elderly people. We certainly don’t fry everything but maybe she as a student does. We cook, bake, fry and deep fry like everyone. She shows mostly deep fried snacks and I’ve never seen anyone frying a mars bar. Rokjesdag is real but isn’t mandatory. It’s more a piece of folklore. Chocolate sprinkles are great. We also put ginger cookies on bread. Stroop (apple juice cooked until it gets thick) is great and some people eat it with cheese on top. Birthday parties are different. We usually sit in a big circle or circles. There is coffee or tea with (apple) cake. Later on other drinks are served and several (dutch) snacks are served. Yes, we in the south eat vlaai. So good. You can hear she’s dutch a tiny bit when she pronounces a G. But she’s from the south where the G is pronounced very softly. Muisjes are anise seeds covered in sugar. Snack walls are everywhere. Yes, one warm meal. Usually around 6 pm.

About the Dutch accent, I think she meant when she says words in Dutch.. I immidiatly heard she's from the south because of her Dutch accent (when she talks Dutch) her English has a "English accent" as we learn in schools here in the Netherlands (My accent isn't proper English though).
@SuperPassionflower
@SuperPassionflower Месяц назад
haha your Scottish accent sounds very much like one of my two expat neighbours, one is English from Sheffield area the other Scotsman from Edinburgh. This Laurie Robyn girl speaks a very almost perfect "proper English". Her name indeed is not a usual Dutch name but perhaps she's born from 1 or both British parent and raised bi-lingual. Her Dutch accent definitely is Limburg, with "soft G" ao.. I am Dutch, Amsterdammer to be precise born in the capital 67 years ago, and used to be Britofile-Anglofile so I can relate to Laurie in a way. The Dutch customs what can I say. About the cycling pretty much true but I don't cycle at all anymore. We don't fry up just about everything anymore, but yes loads of deep fried snacks we have. The 3 kisses on cheeks actually hails from a French catholic habit that probably came to NL in the times of Napoleon but not sure about that. It mostly is used among family, relatives, good friends and acquaintances. all sorts of stuff on bread like sprinkles. Depends, there are many who don't crave that and would settle for a slice of ham, salami, cheese instead of the sweet stuff. We don't eat much toast, rather slice of bread or a bun. We do like toasty though! Perhaps she means round shaped rusk where she says toast.. we call that Beschuit. with blue sprinkles when a baby boy is born and pink for a baby girl, that is a habit. Diabetes type II absolutely is on the rise in Netherlands!! Also obesity. Snack walls, ah yes. Best known franchise is FeBo. Originally from a small bakery-coffee corner in Amsterdam Ferdinand Bolstraat famed for its croquettes. Hence FeBo. The circle of chairs and snack table at birthdays is a bit old fashioned but yes, still a custom in many families. Personally I have never heard of Rokjesdag, but that's just me I suppose. Kingsday is a national happening. Monarchists will decorate everything in orange for sure, and even republicans may join the variety of ways to celebrate. Free markets for adults but also specially for children selling their old stuff, then buy other people's junk to sell the next year. Crazy habit haha. music festivals everywhere, pubs overcrowded and people dancing and drinking on the streets incl. city centre areas such as the Amsterdam canals and squares. Oh and Vlaai, oh yes that is typical Limburg, but much loved everywhere else in the country. It IS delicious. Laurie hasn't mentioned Vlaggetjesdag, which is also a big thing. If you like herring, that is. First day of the new catch, usually somewhere in June. this year 2024 Vlaggetjesdag is 22nd June and I cannot wait!!!! One can wake me up any time for a delicious herring and forget about the onions!

The 3 kisses is fairly recent (if you're old, like me) and came from Brabant province I think. Western Brabant I gues, because I'm from eastern Brabant and no kissing whatsover. Bike-wise: we have bakfietsen (bin-bikes) which used to be freight-bikes, but are now used mostly to transport children. Rokjesdage is not really a thing. And yeah, adults eat all that stuff, I'm not one of them. Ok, I have eaten garlic cheese with honey and that's great. The birthday thing is tragically true... Vlaai is from Limburg and some parts of Brabant, like were I'm from. Limburg on the other side of the river Maas (Meuse in French/English) from where I lived.

Cycling? there's very few weather types that would prevent us from cycling. For years I worked in Haarlem while living in Amsterdam which is about a 16 mile commute. I rode that every day by bike, even in blizzards with about 4-5 inches of snow on the ground. Regarding speaking English, we Dutch are considered to be the most proficient in speaking English of all non-English speaking countries. If she is a foreign exchange student in England, she probably would have been on the upper end of the proficiency distribution to begin with, and through emerging into the language 24/7 she would have improved her proficiency even more, even to the point of losing her accent.

For me the Dutch accent was clearly present, but her English hasn't been influenced too much by US American English. Sounded pretty much the way I learned it in school so many years ago.

@@user-xi6nk4xs4s I am very Dutch as well, I heard (and sadly have a severe case of) the Dutch accent very often as most of my interaction is with Dutch and English speakers. In what way do you hear "the Dutch accent"? Because she speaks nearly flawless with almost RP levels of English.

@@mavadelo I don't say she doesn't speak flawless English, but in the first 10 seconds I could have told you she was most likely from the South of the Netherlands and probably Limburg. Having an accent is not a fault. I've heard too many Dutch people speaking English in my life not to recognize this, and especially the accent from the South of the Netherlands are recognizable for me, being from the South as well. I can't give you specifics, couldn't even do that on my own accent/dialect in Dutch. Sorry.

According to this list I'm not very Dutch for a Dutch person myself........I guess understand them a bit. Though I must say my family is a bit counter traditional. The 3 kisses.... can't stand them myself, it feels very invasive of my personal space no matter how much I like you. I always opt for a handshake if I can get away with it. I only accept kisses like that from my closest family if they really insist. Skirt day .......rokjes dag............pff never XD. Nobody can force me in a dress or a skirt. But yeah it's a thing, still nobody is obligated to do it. Though if you are a guy who wants to wear a skirt i'm not stopping you. XD Apple Stroop.......disgusting. with cheese......even worse. Nothing wrong with just the sprinkles though, but I don't eat them alot....not very healthy. Ugh and the birthday doom circle..............Boring and hate it. Snacks are good though. The pies are good. Pie is better than cake most of the time. Dinner at our house is around 19:00. due to work hours and being stuck in traffic.

The three kisses are fading out. It is very formal and many changed to just one or two. The deepfry thing is absolute nonsense, i can assure you. No idea where she got that from @ all. On rokjesdag woman are not expected to wear a skirt or dress, but they can if they want to, and many do. Kingsday is a day off for everyone. Sure its the King's birthday, but most just celibrate the day off in Orange 😉.
