Just knowing that 1 person wrote and produced and played , also recorded the whole album in his basement . Built the electronics he needed to get the sounds . Pitched the album to the record producers and then had to find the people who could play and sing what he wrote ! He was also told the producers wanted the album to be produced in their studio . He was able to make it look like he was doing what they asked and was really doing it in his basement ! Tom Schultz is Boston . He also graduated college with a degree in electrical engineering which made it possible for him to build what he needed . Taught himself how to play the instruments after college and started a business , by building and selling the electronics to other musicians . Not bad considering he did it all from his basement !!

A year later to that day, played it again and those left sheepishly left the lunch room.

I mean that’s so fun seeing you two having a great time hearing this for the first time. It brings me back to my youth when one of our group bought a new record and we’d all get together together at someone’s place. Bring a little booze and pot. The whole record buying process was an experience. I miss the whole rirptual.of it all. For those who lived back then they’ll know what I’m talking about. Those times were the best times and I’m glad you are experiencing music in this way. How can something so insignificant be so imgrained in my head. Yet it is.

Man you are so right ! I remember we all went to the beach one time and on the boardwalk there was a booth. The booth had a big wheel with numbers on it. Put my quarter on the number on the board at the front of the booth. They spun the wheel and it stopped on my number. I won , and the prize was you got to pick any 1 album from around 100 they had on display. I picked the first Van Halen album. We left the beach and got to our friend Dannys house. We all got a little baked and dropped the needle. What we heard and expierenced was jaw dropping. Never heard anyone play guitar like that. We were stoked.

No synths. No sampling. Every single instrument recorded on tape. No looping. All organic. And Tom Scholz built new guitar effects never before heard anywhere. This album was an evolutionary experience. Shout out to Brad Dell’s vocals. RIP. You were/are legendary.
@neechee5150
@neechee5150 27 дней назад
@mt4design2 What sound or parts on this record do you actually think could be done by the synthesizers available at the time this record was made? Eventide had a sampler out at the time this record was made that was pretty primitive but according to producer John Boylan it did not sound that good and he did not think the sound quality was where it needed to be to be used on a record. As digital recording was rare at this time and really in its infancy what other medium were they going to use to record on other than analog tape? The 3M 79 2 inch 24 track tape machine was the industry standard and this record was mixed on the 2 inch tape format. The effects on the guitars on this record were all in existence before this record and Tom did not invent them. The so called hyperspace pedal which is a modified Echo Plex tape machine had been around for years before Tom made this record.

Tom Scholz married the best of jazz-influenced prog rock (like ELP, Yes, early Genesis, etc.) with the instrumental mastery of 70s arena rock (like Led Zeppelin, Queen, Allman Brothers, Doobie Brothers, Steve Miller Band, etc.). Add in his engineering and producing brilliance, along with his knack for technical innovation, Tom Scholz is an absolute genius.
@neechee5150
@neechee5150 27 дней назад
Here is something that Tom does not talk about because of his Titanic sized ego. When Boylan heard Toms tracks that he wanted to submit for the record, Boylan knew that the drum tracks and acoustic instrument tracks could not be used on the record because they were too amateurish. To remedy the problem, Boylan hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms home studio to tutor Tom on how to properly record acoustic instruments as well as proper mic technique. Boylan then gave Tom a directive to re record all drum and acoustic instrument tracks using the skills and knowledge that Tom had gained from his tutoring.

No recording setup...just my stereo, and my drum kit. All summer long, while my parents were at work, I was "in the studio,"... honing my skills to this song. Even though Neil Peart was my "hero," Sib Hashian, of Boston, through this album, was my mentor. R.I.P. Sib and Neil.

Does this still sound VERY relevant to me today just because I'm old, or because it still IS? Timeless, in my book! I may be 61 now (and it really DOES "feel like" i still should be 28... the decades indeed DO become an unbelievably fast whoosh, just like we're always told!!), but being 61, I live in the same world that today's music exists in, and i can appreciate and critique it perhaps even "better" than someone younger, because I also LIVED the prior decades of music that led up to today being what it is! I'm kind of liking that "old age wisdom" thing lately. It's a real thing, you young whipper snappers! 😉😂💞 🎶 🎹 (see how old i am here on my own channel)

Those "spaceships" on their albums covers/CD covers are guitars. Took me like 30 years to realize that. So the uniqueness of Boston is unmatched, mainly because of the the guy who started this all, Tom Scholz. Tom was going to MIT, he built a lot of his specialized instruments and musical gear himself, hence the uniqueness. Truly a genius. Still, my favorite band of all time, and this is my favorite song and it will be played at my funeral when it's time. 🙂

Tom Scholz , guitarist, MIT brainieack is the guy who put this album together in his basement. Brad Delp on vocals. Barry on second guitar, Fran on bass & Sib on drums. Back in high school around 77 my friends rich girlfriend got 4 tickets to see Boston & Y&T at Winterland in SF We didn’t know Boston then, new band. Tom Scholz came on the stage by himself to started the show with an insane special effects guitar solo , I had never seen anything like that in my life. I WAS SOLD. lol.

Boston was on fire in the mid to late 70's, there was nothing like them after their debut album came out. This is a great party song, guys, with a keg of beer and a bonfire.

When I was working with a night clean up crew at the No. 1 Target store in Minneapolis we turned on the parking lot speakers with Boston LP playing overnight and had car loads of kids partying to Boston outside while we did clean up. LOL Cops came and told us to shut it off. The whole neighborhood was awake at 2:30 am LOL Memories of a rocker at 73. Peace & Love.

The best explanation of this band is from Johnnie Calhoun below. Please read it. The only thing he didn't explain was how difficult it was to form a band around the initial work. Schultz is the biggest genius since Les Paul in terms of hardware, and one of the best musicians in terms of just about every instrument he learned to play. He knew EXACTLY what type of song/album to write to sell his particular hardware and made it so...BY HIMSELF. Simply amazing. Thanks Johnnie Calhoun for all of that....just had to dump some from my memory hole. I hate how old I am. LOL.

@mcseforsale That is nonsense. Barry who plays all of the electric guitar parts on Foreplay and Long Time sans the special effect guitar parts played Toms songs live and on demos with Tom for years before this record was recorded. Barry introduced Tom to Brad back in 1969/1970 about the time that Tom auditioned to play keyboards in Barry's band. Exactly what hardware did Tom take to market that he used to make this record immediately after this record was released? There were no Rockman prototypes used on this record nor where there any Rock Modules on this record. What you hear are Marshall and Ampeg tube amps driven so hard that the power tubes are clipping and saturating naturally. One of the biggest elements of the 'Boston guitar sound" is and has always been the eq curve used to shape the guitar sound. Tom for damn sure did not invent the graphic eq that he used to shape the guitar sound on this record.

I was 17 when this came out! And, let's remember, Tom Scholz made the whole thing himself, played every instrument, developed the electronics for the recording in his rented basement. The sound of my teenage years, muscle cars and the drive in! Thanks guys!

That is some serious urban legend. First off, Let Me Take You Home was written by Brad and the entire song was recorded by the band as pictured on the back of the record at The Record Plant LA. Second, all of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Bolyan at two big name LA studios this is a well documented fact. Tom does not play all of the instrumental tracks on this record, I do not know where this fiction keeps coming from. Tom does not play a single drum track on this record and the record is much better off for this fact. Barry plays on three tracks. Fran plays on two tracks. Sib plays on all tracks but one and Brad plays acoustic 12 string guitar on one track Exactly what specific electronics did Tom develop for this record? I hear/read people make claims that Tom developed all of the electronics needed to record this record but when asked for detail they have very little to no information or facts to base their claims upon. Please keep in mind that no component or or prototype of the Rockman existed at the time the debut record was made and that the heart of the guitar sound on this record is a Marshall SLP tube amp and a graphic eq and Tom most certainly did not design or make those items either. Also Tom purchased the Sculley tape machine that he used and he also purchased the mixer/console that he used to make this record. Tom had nothing to do with the design and manufacture of these items which were the heart of his studio at that time.
