Future ARCHITECT reacts to comedy central's The Man Behind the World’s Ugliest Buildings. There are a lot of reaction videos to comedy central and I just really wanted to react to Gerhardt Fjuck since it came across my recommended page. Overall 11/10 video so so funny. Wonderful job Comedy Central!

The model he flings to the floor is actually a model of a real building. The Soviet Georgian Ministry of Transport building. Which is ironically a proto Post-Modernist building as it was designed to look like a set of intersecting roads.

Don't forget that it's also the individual egos of architects that often create the hideous designs we see. Architecture is a very undemocratic field, where structures which the general public are forced to see everyday are decided by tiny boards and the personal taste of the architect and imposed on them, without their input as to whether they WANT said structure to look as the architect envisions. That's how we end up with Eisenmann, Hadid, Gehry, and all the weird, oblong monstrosities that architecture critics and award boards love, but the general public hates. The obsession with innovation and individuality and making your mark on the environment poisons the field and ignores the true job of the architect, which is to build a place that blends into its environment harmoniously rather than sticking out of it out of pure ego. Look at the myriad of old, beautiful buildings in older towns in Europe, do we know their architects? Mostly, no, but does that matter? Beauty and harmony should matter more than getting one's name out. Architecture is too mired in the celebrity culture and tastes of the upper classes and needs to start listening to the masses of people otherwise all theyre going to do is just keep building ugly structures which the elites applaud, but are largely hated by society.

Filippo Brunelleschi was a florentine architect that lived between the 14th and 15th centuries. He as responsible for the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Castel Sismondo and the Hospital of the Innocents. He was also a massive diva, infamous for throwing tantrums if things didn't go exactly as he wanted. My point is that architects have always been known for their massive egos.

@@Fpwc2 interestingly enough the Notre Dame de Paris's original architect is hardly even known. In fact the french called him "master builder" or something like that. I've been reading a lot about on gothic cathedrals (and gothic revival). It really seems like the architects of these works of art were given way less importance that architects are given today. Today's architecture is ugly because we don't do ornamentation anymore. Architects are just obsessed with functionality and discard beauty. Back then, beauty was a top priority and there were rules to follow. It wasn't about revolutionizing when it's not needed. OP has very valid points.

I know nothing of architecture, but I took a bus from port authority back to Boston, where I constantly see the city hall building (it reminds me of a dystopian novel), plus they have an architecture school here, so this was fun. I learned something!

The most beautiful cities in the world are the ones in which the classical architecture was preserved like Dresden in Germany and other cities across europe and the world that decided to do the same. Also they make you feel comfortable and joyful when you are there. Changing just for the sake of challenging the estabilished norm at any costs is not necessarily a good idea

Also Modernism derives from European Classicism whereas Brutalism derives from non-European Classicism i.e. African and South American Classicism. Hence the use of ziggurat forms and large overhangs which originate in brieze soleil for mor hotter climes. See Le Corbs Chandigarh which is sen as late Modernist / proto Brutlaist.
