///// pretty fair treatment, but I disagree with the rapper guy at the end of the video. First, Elvis was not an R&b artist, but he covered some R&b. As he did with country & ballads. Note: he always covered it AFTER the original artist already had their own hit with it. Example, little Richards comment, he was initially angry Elvis payed him a tribute and sang tutti fruiti is crazy. What little Richard, and the rapper guy are saying is that a non African American is not permitted to cover an R&b song. But the reverse has been true and no one complained of it I do agree with all the other folks on the video, like BBking for example, he said once a song has been put out there, it’s open game for anyone to cover it Elvis had “components” of his music..... country, R&b, Spanish flavored, opera, German music, gospel (white & black) and pop. Like many of the guests on the video (& elsewhere on YT) have said, Elvis DEsegregated music..... He also “injected” something into black music (see comments by James brown, Jackie Wilson, Rufus Thomas, Bobby Womack, Mohammed Ali) But none of these other genres can claim Elvis as their own..... they are only pieces of a puzzle that make up Elvis. In turn, Elvis fused them all together, something no one else did He brought us together

"he always covered it AFTER the original artist already had their own hit with it" That's false. Where do people get this stuff? "Elvis was not an R&b artist" He was the fourth-most-played artist on R&B radio in 1956 and had many hits on the R&B chart.

I was born around Tupelo and lived in Memphis. My brother roofed a part of Graceland. Elvis came up the ladder with a bundle of shingles on his shoulder out of respect for their work. He was that type of person. He respected all people no matter the color of their skin. Black people accepted him when whites did not. I loved the way you spoke of humanity so I subscribed. Thank you for this.❤️

Who would ever think that Elvis his greatest legacy would be unifing the races by his music and his way he was friends with many of the different races not just the black but Indians, Japanese and all races when Martin Luther died in 68 Elvis did a song called, 'If I Can Dream' Elvis's producer said when he just started to learn this song he went alone in a dark place and curled himself in a ball and started singing very low but he heard Elvis and saw him do this. Elvis was devastated when Martin got shot so he sung this song to make us all think what we are doing. Elvis legacy is not over yet he is unifying the races and to expose the race baiters on the political left who is causing much of this division so they can have full control of the masses just listen very closely and you will see this fact. Elvis legacy just may have started 44 years later to be remembered to have unified the races as one, this would make the left lose their control of devide and control theory up in smoke. Folks, keep passing these videos out to shine the light in the dark and expose the hate baiters.

You were a delight to listen to. Mature, respectful & intelligent. I cried when I see people so cruel. I’m white and grew up in Northeastern US. I grew up with blacks and whites. My mom wasn’t prejudiced at all & my dad died when I was 4. So she was too busy struggling with 3 young kids whose husband died young suddenly. I became a nurse in a hospital that was in an area where there was a high black population. The people I worked with were wonderful and down to earth and we were good friends. The patients were treated with respect regardless of color. One visitor made a comment to me asking why I took care of the black critically ill man before her ( rich) white husband & how could I wash them & do procedures. I had never been faced with such blatant racism so I got angry &!told her that when I bathed him this morning, no black came off on the washcloth. I also said I gave both he & your husband enemas and both shit looked the same. Well, I knew I was in trouble and of course she reported me. This was an ICU Unit. My head nurse reprimanded me and I had to apologize to her. Later my head nurse ( who was black) came to me privately & said I handled it wrong with anger & I agreed & then she said “ but good for you”. Watching this video and knowing how kind Elvis was to people made me so sad for him, the blacks of that time. His mom dragged him with her to pick cotton. James Brown had to be pulled out several times at Elvis’s funeral because he was so despondent. Mohammed Ali loved Elvis. They gave special gifts to each other and when he died, Mohammed said something so beautiful I cried when I heard it. I don’t know the exact quote so I can’t repeat it. But it’s on U tube and in books. I’m so tired of one person saying he’s a racist & the media just runs with it. It’s usually quashed after awhile, but it’s tiring. The first rumor years ago was made by a musician in Boston years ago who was jealous of Elvis. Elvis had something to do with stopping that. But it keeps popping it’s ugly head up. I will look back at what you were talking about and listen to it. Thanks for doing this and being so respectful for a man who can’t defend himself. God bless and stay strong & healthy. 👍🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🎸🙏🏼😌😌

I grew up in Tennessee in the ghetto. The person who was my father was a horrific human. He was a bootlegger and a drunk and did pills and was horrifically violent. My momma and me, being the oldest daughter were the ones who suffered the most at his demon hands.. There was twelve of us kids. I was the oldest girl. I have nine brothers and two sisters. My momma suffered horribly at his hands. I say that to say this. We survived, as did our neighbors. We lived next door to the Precious Ms Fine. She was a single Black Mother and just like my Momma 💔😭 has now passed into GLORY took care of us like Mrs Fine took care of us Hill kids as she did her children. She was an absolutely Beautiful Woman of God. To this Very Day, even tho our mommies have passed still Love one another....All these years Later. I believe it is because Dorothy Hill and Joanne Fine raised their many children in The Way of The Lord. Yep.... This is how I see it💙🙏

Yes! Bring Elvis back; I enjoy your reactions of him. I never understood the misconception with Elvis & racism. Elvis was color blind; he only saw humanity, thru the eyes of love. Sad the level of hypocrisy he suffered thru. It hurt him greatly to be thought of like this. I'm grateful he journeyed thru it all & gave us great entertainment. Elvis only knew how to respect humanity, like we all should. Imagine if we all sang the same chorus; there would be no harmony! God created us as individuals for a reason.❤ I think EP did his part to shed light, but sadly this world has not grown past it. 👍 Great reaction!

I believe that it was about a couple of years ago that Elvis Presley was presented the freedom award by President Trump, however this bewilders me that with Trump appreciated Elvis Presley's music, the Donald Trump does not seem to recognize that Elvis Presley would not be an alignment with what Donald Trump it's doing for We the People. Elvis had the courage and belief in himself to go on despite all the hate. These hateful remarks hurt him because he was good and was raised in the church. When he went on the Milton Berle show that show received one half million pan letters calling him vulgar and a bad influence. That is when Berle called Elvis' manager and told him he had a star on his hands. Elvis did see himself as someone trying to bridge the gap between the white community and other communities. He was part Native American and I think he saw himself as Native American, while understanding his white privilege. He played a half-Native American character in the movies Flaming Star and G.I. Blues.

@@DasmaniaXDReacts Awesome. I watch a lot of old 1910s-1950s movies, and Flaming Star (1960) is definitely one of the most historically important ones out there. It's set in the Victorian era and it's about white people treating him like dirt when they find out he's Native American. I've seen people do reaction videos of some of Elvis's movies by splitting them into three parts so that they might not get taken down by RU-vid. If you wanted to try that, I'd watch it. But if not, I definitely recommend watching the movie anyway.

My daddy was raised in East Nashville, my mama in Detroit. They raised us listening to Elvis, The Jackson’s, BBKing. We would jam as we got older with gospel artists like Marvin Sapp, Donnie McClurkin, Hezekiah Walker. It was just normal for us, we went to church with my dads friends pretty often and loved it. my dad and mom had friends of all colors, so did we. I was 15 the first time I encountered racism. I was completely dumbfounded that someone could despise someone just because of the color of their skin. It’s just as ridiculous as hating someone because their eyes are a different color, or their hair curly or straight. I’ll never forget that day when one of my friends had a horrible thing said to them by a stupid person who lived under a rock. I still don’t understand it, never will. My husband went to grad school at Southern Miss, MANY of his friends were and are not white. All that to say, I am SO thankful for the way I was raised, I wish more people would raise their kids with the outlook my parents had. My dad is no longer living, but his life still speaks through us and his friends.

If you haven't already done so listen to, "I Did It My Way" and "If I Can Dream" (which was from his 1968 Comback Special that was on tv). No matter what Elvis sung is was great. Every once in a while there's a voice that stands out among everyone else. Elvis, of course, The Righteous Brothers, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Freddie Mercury, Rick James, Teena Marie and Janis Joplin just to name a few. I was just sitting here thinking. What makes them so different and it just hit me why they are/were so loved. It's their unique voices of course but also what made that distinctive uniqueness was the fact that they were singing from their hearts, souls and emotions and you can hear and feel that. Elvis also did a lot of gospel music. He put out three gospel albums. You should listen to all of his music. I remember hearing the same rumors but I never believed them. After all, if he was a racist, would he have bought people cars, jewelry, homes or treated them as equals?! He went through hell and back throughout his lifetime and still pretty much stayed strong. There's just so much about his life. Every once in a while there is someone sent to make this world a better place. You know who they are just by their presence alone, but it just seems that the world only gets worse.

Racism has always been crazy and made no sense. Elvis was the opposite of racist! People’s hearts and minds form perspectives through their exposure and experiences. Elvis was exposed to black people living among us from an early age in the ghetto and the projects in Memphis. I was born a little black baby girl in the 50’s Detroit, exposed to multiple cultures Detroit and in Los Angeles on the 60’s-70’s and taught to love everyone.

He could not figure out when he first started performing why all of the girls were crazy..someone in his band told him it was the way that he moved..he did t even know he was doing it..he just felt the music. We do need to do better as a society. We are all human and music lime art is open to interpretation. Everyone has a different view however that does not mean that only 1 is right. Elvis broke so many barriers and loved people for who they were. I love that you are taking the time to get to know who Elvis was. He was so much more than his music. You may enjoy Elvis a generous heart. It is a short documentary but shows the kind of heart that he had. I am excited to go I to your Playlist and see kore of your Elvis reactions. I don't understand the need for y'all to keep bringing up Democrats without bringing up how the parties ideologies switched. With out bringing up the Dixiecrats. If you're gonna bring up history, tell the whole history and don't cherry pick the parts you wanna tell to further your agenda. Democrats from that time are now the Republican party of today and that's a fact.

@@mikeadams2677 Is that why states that were once red are now blue and states that were once blue are now red? The switch did indeed happen. You're just in denial. See you're problem is, you're trying to pin point a specific date but the switch happened over a period of time. It started with the politicians from the Dixiecrats breaking off from the Democratic party and eventually moving over to the Republican party and eventually both parties ideologies changed. There's so much more proof of the switch but y'all just chose to ignore it. No y'all don't believe in freedom and equal opportunities for all, that's a straight out lie and it shows in current policies the Republican party are trying to pass. I will agree, Democrats were terrible in the past but for many many years now, the Democratic party have been trying to fix the damages the old Democratic party caused, only to be met with opposition from the Republican party. The Republican party don't want change, they want to keep the old ways and the old policies created by the old Democratic party. That's just one of many proof of the switch. There's so much things that go on today that prove the switch indeed happened. Would you like me to list them? Open your eyes. You're blinded by the false patriotic propaganda from the right.

(the group responsible for putting up confederate statues years after the civil war, during the Jim Crow era, to intimidate black people). * Why did Dixiecrats join the Republican party? * Why do the KKK now vote Republican? * Why is it Republicans that now fly the confederate flag? * Why is it Republicans defending confederate statues? * Why are "sundown towns" in red states? * Why do all white supremacists groups vote Republican? * Why is it that, the states that had the most slaves are now red states? * Why is it everytime a racist goes on a racist rant, they're usually a Republican? I love your channel and you lift my day! Little stories from the past: There was a black blues group the Valentino’s that was going up charts with a song they wrote “It’s all over now”. R&B star Sam Cooke was also a brilliant record producer and encouraged Valentino’s to let Rolling Stones take the song-went to #1: RS version sounded a Lot like Valentino’s. And Valentino’s made ton of money. from song writing royalties. Little Richard did too. John Fogerty of CCR wrote Proud Mary. The song took off with Tina Turner. Lastly one of the writing teams that many in the rock/blues world used was Lieber and Stoehler, including Big Mama and Elvis.Everyone wins when music is just music. Have to credit Sam Phillips of Sun Records, who promoted anyone with talent using anyone’s good songs. He promoted Elvis who had started life at near rock bottom, opened gates, and welcomed everyone in

What you're talking about 27:15 in the video.. about BB King's comment... Reminded me Barack Obama just said almost the same thing last month in his sit down discussion with his friend Bruce Springsteen. Pres Obama also said for the record he was an Elvis fan during that conversation. He has Elvis on his personal playlist. Pretty cool. On a separate note - every time I hear that Three 6 Mafia rap mix I always wish they would have done a full length Studio released version of that. There's a few remixes of it out there on RU-vid, but not a full-length one actually done by them. Always wondered if the audio piece we hear them doing here in this documentary is somewhere out there in a longer full length audio released format. I know a lot of people dig it also but nobody seems to be able to find a full recording from them of it

So far, according to anything that I've seen, read, or heard that has any legitimacy or validity, and mind you, I've been around for almost 33 years, which isn't “a long time” to some, but to those who know me on a personal basis, however, I've lived a relatively “unusual” life, as far as the amount of differencing experiences I've endured and the levels of severity and circumstance, and I have lived a life well beyond my age; I, have yet, to see anything that supports Elvis being “racist,” and I agree with you that words that carry significant and vital meaning, get thrown around so flippantly nowadays, and not to mention, more times than not, they get attached to people/situations inaccurately and without justification, which then, little by little, devalues that importance behind the word. I can, without a doubt, give Elvis credit, so to speak, and respect the artist he was and the role he played in music history; I, unlike some, would never, ever, ever try to proclaim that Elvis “had no talent” or any other similar sentiment, for several reasons, but most explicitly, because it's beyond evident that Elvis had talent, lol. I will say, however, that I just watched another video on someone’s channel where people were reminiscing about Elvis and said, “he created Rock’n’Roll” or “Elvis started Rock’n’Roll.”. That general sentiment is the one thing that I, and personally speaking, do not agree with and think that it is partly why specific individuals have a “problem” with Elvis; in reality, however, it is not Elvis who started that particular mindset. I think that it is more than apparent, especially given the fact that people were calling Elvis, his music, and his dancing “the N-word,” and not just the more commonly used term of endearment that we often hear throughout music, culture, you name it but *the* N-word [hard R], that Rock’N’Roll did not start, nor did it originate with Elvis. I don't think anyone, not even myself, needs to explain why people back then used that disgusting description, of all descriptive words, to “classify,” so to speak, what type of music, sound, and overall essence Elvis was playing. However, and there is no doubt in my mind that the main reason why people have trouble giving Elvis the recognition he earned, as well as honoring the *fact* that Rock’n’Roll did not start, nor was it created by Elvis, is because people, in general, nowadays acquire this singular-leveled mindset that consists of an all or nothing, black or white, overly straightforward, excessively simplified, superficial, “take it at face value,” narrow, confined, eager to pass negative judgment, self-centered, hyper-focus, lack of cognitive thinking strategies/skills, quick to label something/someone as “bad” or “wrong” just because they lack an understanding of that thing, person, or circumstance surrounding that person [if I don't understand it or have never experienced it then “it must be wrong.”], lack of empathetic ability to understand and relate to someone regardless of an immediate relation to how that person appears on the surface or the circumstance relating to that person, quick to point the finger at someone not knowing that three more fingers are pointing right back at themselves, and so much more, type of mentality and way of living; I, however, disagree with those who possess the understanding of where Rock’N’Roll originated, but in return, blame Elvis or label him as a “racist.”. To me, there is hardly anything, if anything at all, that validates that idea or “gives it a leg to stand on,” so to speak. As far as Elvis giving credit, recognition, or honoring those who he became influenced by and doing so sufficiently, I don't know enough about that specific subject to comment either way; as far as, however, the things you touched on, as well as the details I reflected on in this comment, I agree, entirely.

I'm sure the reporter who started this rumor and lie about him is long gone but isn't it sad that the power of trying to bring this man down lives on 43 years beyond his death. Every person who continues to spread this untruth should do their own research because its evil to talk against him based on a flat out lie. The people who were there would know what kind of person he was and speak of how he treated them. Someone puts some garbage in print and it lives forever as truth. Lesson be careful what comes out of your mouth about someone, the damage can be far reaching. Great commentary. Vicki

In the end, I would take the words from people like BB King, Little Richard, and the background singers over the rap singer's opinion because 1) THEY were there and 2) THEY were directly impacted by Elvis. Even Little Richard, who was unhappy when Elvis covered Tutti Frutti, saw benefit from it--and BB King is right (and frankly, rap and hip-hop benefit frequently from "sampling" other people's music). Elvis never made claims to be the best or to be "the King." Jealous people show up everywhere and show their ignorance, making assumptions rather than investigating the truth. Elvis has been 45 years (this August) and people still talk about him with the reverence he deserves for doing what he did so well. 45 years after those rap singers' deaths, no one will remember their names in a collective manner. Nothing they are doing truly stands out. There is some excellent rap music and some excellent hip-hop, but nothing as extraordinary in the way of performers that will ever match Elvis's impact.

The racism claims started from the magazine “Sepia”. An anonymous “Person from the Street” alleged that they heard Elvis say “the only thing N*groes can do for me is buy my records and shine my shoes” on a tv program earlier that year. They claimed to remember him saying it on the Boston program called “Person to Person”. Jet Magazine did an investigative report on the claims and the learned that 1.) Elvis was never on that show and 2.)At that point in his life Elvis had never been to Boston. It was also discovered that the owner of Sepia magazine had been openly racist himself. Many believe that Sepia magazine was trying to put a wedge between Elvis’ fans and destroy Elvis’ career in the process. Unfortunately less people saw the Jet magazine article that proved these claims were false, so people still believe that Elvis said these things.

My God ppl wanted him arrested, . Elvis Actually perfered gospel that's what his roots were, as he got older he went bk to the gospel music,. Elvis came along and meshed the cool sound of the soul music to the white,, I guess you could say the young E explode in to the 50s era and those narrow minded ppl were shocked, but E was a rebel he wasn't going to be stopped 😎👍❤️no he wasn't racist he appreciated all ppl !!

Yeah, Chuck D's POV hasn't aged well, since people can now know so much more about not just Elvis, but the way someone becomes a person or persona, particularly in an artistic sense. It's only weird because Chuck is an artist and should know better. But the whole "Elvis stole black music" is just one of the most ridiculous charges you could level at the guy. I mean, of all things, appropriating black culture isn't one of the things you can legit be angry with Elvis for. It's a small-minded POV of the whole situation, honestly. Seeing it as a child might see it. Thankfully, education helps people like that understand why they're wrong.

I don’t remember who it was but back in the 1970s I watched an interview on television with a very popular singer/songwriter. In this person’s opinion you were not a good singer if the only songs you could sing were the songs you wrote yourself. This person then added that by the same logic you were not a good songwriter if you were the only person who could sing the songs you write. You were only a good singer if you could take a song written by someone else and make it a success. As a songwriter you are only successful when another person can sing a song that you wrote that people request be played on the radio.
